To laugh and mock this man when he’s probably knows more than us is silly.

People in this forum always talk about pRivAcY when it literally doesn’t exist in today’s age.

I said the same thing to my wife last night watching the keynote. There’s nothing stopping open AI from harvesting data.
These don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Elon can be an idiot who rightfully deserves to be mocked, and OpenAI can be an untrustworthy company.

Wow, nice. Another Musk’s attention grab worked like a charm: this news story now has more comments than most of the news about iOS itself. And this guy just rants, he doesn’t even need to unveil anything, true innovation lol

Wow...a new generation of Apple fanbois on here defending everything Apple does? Elon is 100% correct in saying that Apple has no idea what ChatGPT does with user data and is selling its users down the river. ChatGPT is a giant info-suck that is going to cause a lot of damage before too long. Sam Altman is Nefarious AF. Everything that comes out of that guy's mouth is vague and contrived and scheming. There's literally nothing "open" about "OpenAI". The company name is straight up gaslighting. Elon's bit about faraday cages was obviously a joke. Seems to me the iSheep on macrumors are lacking a sense of humor.

Well, let’s see what MKBHD has to say on this matter.

He’s already called Elon Musk out on this tweet and will be publishing a video regarding this in time.

Musk is the only one who sees through this ChatGPT fiasco.
Tim Apple should retire. Musk should be Apple’s next CEO.
This is might be the most asinine post on macrumors I’ve seen in the last 3 seconds. Of the numerous companies musk runs, which ones are profitable? do any of them have a trillion dollar market cap? No matter what you think of musk, he may be very wealthy, but is he a successful CEO?

I hope apple retaliated by banning any devices running XAI lol
All three of them?
He has a point. How can we verify that our data won’t be made accessible to OpenAI? I trust Apple. I don’t trust OpenAI.
I am quite sure that Apple will be using the license that allows the LLM to run on their own hardware.
As much as I don’t agree with much of what Elon says and does, he is right about one thing. Every bit of your data goes to OpenAI and is there forever, for everyone else to access as well. It’s the exact reason why companies forbid their coders to use AI engines in coding. All the code they upload is available and free for anyone else’s queries to pull down. Not all data is private, but a lot is.
Not if Apple chooses to use the version of the license that lets them run a custom instance of GPT on their own hardware.
I think he knows a lot about AI, and OpenAI In particular.

I don't trust OpenAI. Maybe Apple has a special deal with them. Maybe they don't. But I still don't trust them.
One of the licenses available to very large OpenAI users is to allow them to compile their own version of GPT and run it on their own farm. For Apple, not only would this be the safest option, it would be the least costly.

Elon Musk has threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies over Apple’s newly announced ChatGPT integration.

elon-musk.jpg

Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia allows Siri to utilize ChatGPT to handle complex queries, but only when explicit user permission is provided. The feature is designed to provide users with richer, more contextual responses without requiring them to open the ChatGPT app.

During Apple's keynote event, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, emphasized that users will have full control over when ChatGPT is used and that data shared with OpenAI would not be logged or stored. "You are in control over when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared," Federighi said.

Despite these assurances, Musk expressed strong opposition to the integration on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Musk said, "If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation." He continued, "Visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage." He also repeatedly questioned Apple's ability to ensure data security, stating, "Apple has no clue what's actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They're selling you down the river."

Apple and OpenAI have both emphasized that user data will only be shared with explicit consent and that these interactions are designed to be secure. OpenAI noted in a new blog post that "requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users' IP addresses are obscured." Users can also choose to connect their ChatGPT accounts to access paid features, but this is an opt-in feature.

Apple has been clear in its messaging that the new AI capabilities are designed with user privacy at the core. Apple's approach leverages a combination of on-device processing and cloud computing, ensuring that data is not stored in the cloud. Apple's integration of ChatGPT into its operating systems is part of a broader strategy to enhance the AI capabilities of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Can we put Musk in a Faraday cage?

I mean sure, go ahead. There's already plenty of people on the fence about whether they want to continue using Twitter, and that might just be the nudge they need.

If I didn't know better I'd swear that Musk bought Twitter with the intention of deliberately wrecking it.

I don't like him and don't think he knows anything about digital products considering the state of Twitter now. But he has a point about OpenAI. I simply don't trust the company who stole Scarlett Johansson's voice after she explicitly denied their use of it. And OpenAI is generally very shady. With that said, I don't understand why he allows any other tech in the office as anyone can access ChatGPT from any kind of device and the integration doesn't make a difference. The same way you wouldn't share corporate secrets with ChatGPT, you wouldn't do it to Siri either.

I think this is terrible for Apple. And I don't think Elon is wrong. Everything about OpenAI has been super sketchy.

Worse, is downstream - this might really undermine Apple's ability to operate in China.

Sure, go ahead and ban Apple devices so people with only Android devices will be allowed to take their phones with them at the workplace, which is obviously way more secure /s

For a man who has so much experience about FUD being directed at HIS companies, he's pretty quick and harsh to dish it out - and you'd think he'd know better.

It would be one thing to say something like "Apple has to be VERY careful about how they deal with ChatGPT" - that makes perfect sense. But to jump to conclusions and make inflammatory remarks like this only highlight the fact that Musk's condition (being on the spectrum) affects his ability to deal with people. His skills in that area stink on ice.

I don't trust OpenAI and am wondering why Apple trusts them so blindly. Maybe they have a good deal but in the end, it will be our data being sold because nobody reads the EULA.

It’s unfathomable that 13 years after the introduction of Siri, Apple hasn’t developed an in-house AI platform and has to rely on third parties. How is it possible that Musk has founded two AI companies, has brought forward an EV company that is making a profit making and selling EVs and manufactures the most popular vehicle in the world, is heading a space exploration company that pioneered reusable rockets and has made hundreds of successful lunches and landings, heads a social media platform, a brain mapping research company, an electricity generation and storage business, a virtual electric utility, a space satellite-based ISP with global coverage, etc. while Apple continues to iterate on iPhones, Macs, Apple Watches, and iPads?

For the past decade, there has been a tremendous acceleration in AI research. Google has made their own AI platform. Microsoft invested in OpenAI. The Chinese have created dozens of AI companies. WHERE HAS APPLE BEEN? Working on the Vision Pro?

The concern that Musk has voiced is a real concern. There is a potential of a serious data leak into the domain of the company (OpenAI) that Apple doesn’t have any control over. With all the concerns about the harm that AI could cause without AI developers intent, handing off data to a third-party AI Platform is dangerous. Obscuring IP addresses is not enough. The sensitive information will be contained within the requests to the AI platform without a clear understanding of what will happen once AI gets a hold of the information. Who is going to be filtering the sensitive information from the requests before they are handed off to OpenAI? Only an AI platform could attempt to filter sensitive information out of users’ requests, but Apple has no AI platform that could perform this task.

It’s truly astonishing that Apple has decided to outsource AI in such a dramatic manner. Apparently, they’ve been caught with their pants down and are now trying to come up with an AI solution by outsourcing it because of the fear of being left behind, since they have nothing of note developed internally. We know this because of how incompetent Siri has been since its launch.

oh nooooooo what will i do if i won’t be able to use his dried up app?? ya know, the one that everyone has to refer to by what it was called years ago when people used to care about it because he’s so dumb he threw away a well known brand and replaced it with something a corny 12 year old boy would think was cool :’(

if myspace announces they’re blocking ios devices too i think apple’s a goner :’( :’(
Just build your own app! 🤩

He should lock himself inside a faraday cage

He is upset because:
- Apple didn’t choose his AI system.
- Apple has set a benchmark for customer protection and anonymity that he will be measured against and he doesn’t want limits put on his knowing who the user is and what they are doing.

This isn't true.

Especially not in the case of Apple's integration where the data sent is never saved and OpenAI don't even get the IP.

Don't forget the only thing ever coming from Apple to ChatGPT (or the other LLMs they'll integrate) are going to be questions about things like "what's the longest giraffes neck" etc - all personal questions will handled on device. They're using the LLMs as a knowledge database nothing more.

Further what you said isn't even true about OpenAI full stop, there's lots of options to control your data, including a temporary chat where it won't be used to train models and won't appear in history. You can turn off the data training option to (I leave it on, I don't know why you wouldn't want things to get better)- you can delete all chats from account, to delete the entire account.
