I think before everyone scoffs at Musk's comment, carefully "reading between the lines" I think he wants Apple to be able to easily use other AI models like X.com's Grok, GitHub's Copilot, Google's Gemini and even Gab's Gab AI, selected by the end user.
Reading between the lines, he has been trying to slow OpenAI's progress here since December 2022. He wants to be known for AI, no matter what the cost...how can he be the future of humanity if he isn't the source for its AI? His motivations are all too clear and if he kept his cards closer to his chest he wouldn't be so easily dismissed. He's not looking to make sure choosing AI is like choosing a search engine, he's looking to make sure his three AI companies have a chance.

You're making it seem as if this guy has some intention to lean into open standards, and he'd certainly go along with you if it made him look good. He didn't claim there should be choice, he claimed that OpenAI can't be trusted.

Github doesn't have it's own AI, it's Microsoft Copilot and that's the Github iteration - which is also just OpenAI behind the scenes.

Everyone quick to trust Apple on privacy when not too long ago they were going to scan your library for CSAM without even batting an eye. you think they had a change of heart on intrusiveness? I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell..

I think this claim of privacy should absolutely be challenged and have Apple show its work.
Interestingly, they had a change of heart on scanning your library for CSAM... Sure, Apple should show how this is done - but they kind of already did that.

Look, there should be the ability of end users to select the AI model used by Apple Intelligence. In the case of MacOS, possibly multiple AI models. Even Apple themselves said they would eventually allow Apple Intelligence to use other AI models in the future.

Sure, that's you saying that, not Musk. And I wouldn't disagree.

Who founded OpenAI?
Founding OpenAI doesn't mean he had the idea and built it in his garage. It was founded by Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Durk Kingma, Jessica Livingston, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata, and Wojciech Zaremba, with Sam Altman and Elon serving on the board.

Musk quit in 2018 because he felt OpenAI was moving too slowly. And, when they suddenly lapped everyone last fall, he threw a tantrum about it.

I work in AI space, in medical AI. Musk is richer than he is smart. Trust me. He's far from indispensable.

Fun how the first responses were how Elon is a "man child", and then the voices of reason finally arrive. Nothing about how ChatGPT uses data should be trusted, regardless of what Apple says. If ChatGPT didn't get anything out of this arrangement, there wouldn't be one.

Musk knows more about ai and privacy in computing than all the collective human intelligence on this board times 1000000 (just used my new iPad calculator to do that!) AI in infosec departments is a top three concern and managing its implications in the corporate world is in its nascence. I’d listen to Musk on this before I would the late night infomercial guy with the 45% margin running Apple.
-e-e-e-e!!! Touche’

Notice that Musk has made no such statements of Windows PCs despite similar ChatGPT integrations...

Thus the most likely explanation imo is that Apple was getting a ton of attention and Elon forever the narcissist decided he wanted some of that for himself

This. You don’t have to like Elon Musk. But what he said and says about AI and privacy has merit. Unfortunately we live in a world that consists of binary choices. You either like someone or you hate the person. It’s stupid. OpenAI is a shady company with shady people at the helm. Look at that Sam Altman guy and the Scarlett Johansen controversy. He asked her to lend her voice, she declined, he then kinda copied/cloned her voice anyway. He then removed the clone after she threatened him with legal action. He also got fired from the company after a lead AI scientist saw something scary in relation to the evolving AI models. Then he got rehired again and the leading AI scientist left the company. The thing with companies like OpenAI is that it is developing a technology that is going to change the world in a rapid fashion, it will make the last 25 years of technological advancement feel like the Stone Age. It’s always about power and these companies are ruled by psychopaths. Your data is not safe with OpenAI and Apple was indeed caught off guard and now they are forced to make a deal with a company that lacks transparency. What could go wrong?
Yeah, Apple is panicking. They were caught off guard and now they had to agreed to this deal. And for people that think otherwise, you just have to see what devices are going to get I, it’s iPhone 15 Pro and up lol. They were obviously projecting this to be released in maybe three years.

This isn't true.

Especially not in the case of Apple's integration where the data sent is never saved and OpenAI don't even get the IP.

Don't forget the only thing ever coming from Apple to ChatGPT (or the other LLMs they'll integrate) are going to be questions about things like "what's the longest giraffes neck" etc - all personal questions will handled on device. They're using the LLMs as a knowledge database nothing more.

Further what you said isn't even true about OpenAI full stop, there's lots of options to control your data, including a temporary chat where it won't be used to train models and won't appear in history. You can turn off the data training option to (I leave it on, I don't know why you wouldn't want things to get better)- you can delete all chats from account, to delete the entire account.
I mean, Apple made it very clear in the keynote that even companies that promise they aren’t storing anything do. It was really ironic how they said that but then promised how Open AI won’t do it lol.

Yeah Apple is big on Privacy but just a little bit bigger at keeping their shareholders happy. LOL.

Well even if OpenAI broke the law (which would seem daft for a company so new trying to establish itself) and lied about what they were doing. They're not sent any personal data and they're not sent any IP addresses. So what exactly are they going to do with millions of questions like "how tall is the biggest giraffes" "tell me about the golden gate bridge", "what's the most expensive coffee in the world" etc.

Not a lot - it's not even good enough to train their models with.

Apple will show a slick video during the iPhone 16 keynote in September which features how privacy works with ChatGPT and the majority of people will be convinced and opt in. You gotta show off that new Genmoji, bcos FOMO!

Watch out for Open AI. That guy is not trust worthy at all.
