Notice that Musk has made no such statements of Windows PCs despite similar ChatGPT integrations...

The most likely explanation imo is that Apple was getting a ton of attention and Elon forever the narcissist decided he wanted some of that for himself

Considering it is an MS tool do you expect anything else?

I think he knows a lot about AI, and OpenAI In particular.

I don't trust OpenAI. Maybe Apple has a special deal with them. Maybe they don't. But I still don't trust them.

Of course Apple has a special deal with them, that’s why there’s only one 3rd party service… no one else agreed to Apple’s terms; no account needed and query anonymized.

Google won’t, they want all your data.

Well even if OpenAI broke the law (which would seem daft for a company so new trying to establish itself) and lied about what they were doing. They're not sent any personal data and they're not sent any IP addresses. So what exactly are they going to do with millions of questions like "how tall is the biggest giraffes" "tell me about the golden gate bridge", "what's the most expensive coffee in the world" etc.

Not a lot - it's not even good enough to train their models with.

Stop and think about that for the moment.
OpenAI isn’t doing this out of the goodness of their $$$MS_Heart$$$. They are getting something out of this. What that is I bet matches what they need (IMO). It should be interesting when this tidbit(s) comes to light.

I think this is terrible for Apple. And I don't think Elon is wrong. Everything about OpenAI has been super sketchy.

Worse, is downstream - this might really undermine Apple's ability to operate in China.
Apple will certainly need to use a different partner for the external chatbot integration in China. Sources have reported that Apple wants to have arrangements similar to what they do with web search where there are different chatbots available, either by user choice or by market. I'm also sure that one of the options will be "none" for those who want to turn this part off.

Elon Musk has threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies over Apple’s newly announced ChatGPT integration.

elon-musk.jpg

Apple Intelligence in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia allows Siri to utilize ChatGPT to handle complex queries, but only when explicit user permission is provided. The feature is designed to provide users with richer, more contextual responses without requiring them to open the ChatGPT app.

During Apple's keynote event, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, emphasized that users will have full control over when ChatGPT is used and that data shared with OpenAI would not be logged or stored. "You are in control over when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared," Federighi said.

Despite these assurances, Musk expressed strong opposition to the integration on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Musk said, "If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation." He continued, "Visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage." He also repeatedly questioned Apple's ability to ensure data security, stating, "Apple has no clue what's actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They're selling you down the river."

Apple and OpenAI have both emphasized that user data will only be shared with explicit consent and that these interactions are designed to be secure. OpenAI noted in a new blog post that "requests are not stored by OpenAI, and users' IP addresses are obscured." Users can also choose to connect their ChatGPT accounts to access paid features, but this is an opt-in feature.

Apple has been clear in its messaging that the new AI capabilities are designed with user privacy at the core. Apple's approach leverages a combination of on-device processing and cloud computing, ensuring that data is not stored in the cloud. Apple's integration of ChatGPT into its operating systems is part of a broader strategy to enhance the AI capabilities of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

I agree! Integration at an OS level, not great. But if Apple can find a way to enable AI as a feature and select the vendor with the ability to audit all data sent to them, that would be cool.

It’s unfathomable that 13 years after the introduction of Siri, Apple hasn’t developed an in-house AI platform and has to rely on third parties. How is it possible that Musk has founded two AI companies, has brought forward an EV company that is making a profit making and selling EVs and manufactures the most popular vehicle in the world, is heading a space exploration company that pioneered reusable rockets and has made hundreds of successful lunches and landings, heads a social media platform, a brain mapping research company, an electricity generation and storage business, a virtual electric utility, a space satellite-based ISP with global coverage, etc. while Apple continues to iterate on iPhones, Macs, Apple Watches, and iPads?

For the past decade, there has been a tremendous acceleration in AI research. Google has made their own AI platform. Microsoft invested in OpenAI. The Chinese have created dozens of AI companies. WHERE HAS APPLE BEEN? Working on the Vision Pro?

The concern that Musk has voiced is a real concern. There is a potential of a serious data leak into the domain of the company (OpenAI) that Apple doesn’t have any control over. With all the concerns about the harm that AI could cause without AI developers intent, handing off data to a third-party AI Platform is dangerous. Obscuring IP addresses is not enough. The sensitive information will be contained within the requests to the AI platform without a clear understanding of what will happen once AI gets a hold of the information. Who is going to be filtering the sensitive information from the requests before they are handed off to OpenAI? Only an AI platform could attempt to filter sensitive information out of users’ requests, but Apple has no AI platform that could perform this task.

It’s truly astonishing that Apple has decided to outsource AI in such a dramatic manner. Apparently, they’ve been caught with their pants down and are now trying to come up with an AI solution by outsourcing it because of the fear of being left behind, since they have nothing of note developed internally. We know this because of how incompetent Siri has been since its launch.
Apple has developed their own in-house AI and that is what is running on-device. What Apple doesn't have is an answerbot AI that indexes the web and provides answers based on your queries. That is more of a web search function and not something that Apple has, so far, gone in for. What Apple is doing with their AI on device is much more focused on your productivity with your data and apps.

I'm sure that counts downloads while Xitter was still Twitter, before the elongated muskrat turned it to excrement.

I deleted my account the day that moron walked into the Xitter office carrying a sink.

I deleted my Facebook account after the Cambridge Analytica debacle.

You deleted your X account because you think Musk is a doodie head.

Yes but that isn’t the same thing. Apple current AI is more like a specific tool, not the tool box.

Here is how I see it - kindly correct me…
Apple has a bunch of on device AI tools (limited) that they will expand with iOS18. More tools. Cool.
If on device is too limited then they move to the Apple Intelligence Cloud Server Thingy. Tool box. Nice.
If that is too limited then ChatGPT/OpenAI is queued up. Tool chest. Nice but why did Apple integrate it?

This whole set feels more like a new version of Apple lock-in and launched too soon. JMO

Founding OpenAI doesn't mean he had the idea and built it in his garage. It was founded by Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Durk Kingma, Jessica Livingston, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata, and Wojciech Zaremba, with Sam Altman and Elon serving on the board.

Musk quit in 2018 because he felt OpenAI was moving too slowly. And, when they suddenly lapped everyone last fall, he threw a tantrum about it.

I work in AI space, in medical AI. Musk is richer than he is smart. Trust me. He's far from indispensable.
I find it hilarious that people minimize Elon's work in Tesla and focus on the "true" founders of Tesla (Martin). at the same time people minimize Elon's founder status as if it doesn't matter and focus on the true workers of OpenAI

I love dunking on Elon but let's be consistent here.

Any ***** can be founder of something by raising cash. Some aholes claim to be founders of countries by invading them. Founder means nothing. It’s an ***** title. Have a consistently respectable career and not acting like 60 year old social media karen is important.

I wonder how many of those savaging him over his policy decision at his company will still drive their Tesla?

they have actually. there's AppleBot that"s been scraping all of my websites lately

then why do people try to figure out who are the "real" cofounders of Tesla?

FYI: I have been amazed and impressed at EM’s achievements thus far, seeing him as a disruptor, pushing the envelope, creating more than perhaps any one single person before him. I didn’t need to “like” him to think he was pretty awesome. I’ve NEVER liked the cultish following he’s amassed and his blatant willingness to take advantage of it. Recently I’ve also been taken aback at his outburst, his apparent erratic behaviour and willingness to abuse his power. I now see him as an overworked spectrumite being pulled in too many directions by too many people with too few guardrail's (and then there’s the drgs). He seems emotionally frail at this point and slightly paranoid, easily offended/triggered and very reactive.

But I digress…

He might have a point with this AI integration, in general. But why is he so concerned? Espionage and theft is a reality with phones already. And it’s the way he does it that “off”. He’s like a bitter ex-husband refusing his ex-wife taking the kids on holiday with her new beau, just because. So it’s counterproductive for his stated goals. And what about Windows and Co-Pilot? And Google will be doing exactly the same with Android. And Apple is the strictest with this type of things in the workplace. Does he think Apple employees will get a separate version?

He doesn’t care how he’s perceived, but in a society how one is perceived determines the outcome of one’s wants/objectives. So he’s working against himself too often IMHO.

There’s no debating he’s an intelligent man. But is he too intelligent for his own good?
He is an artistic. They are always subject to change.

And then I learn that my social security number was leaked to the dark web due to a security breach at AT&T, even though I haven’t had an AT&T account for ten years. So, yeah, it’s difficult to believe it when companies claim they will delete your data.

But I don’t see how this data is less secure than a Google or Bing search.

Hmmm...

Apple privacy blunders such as deleted photos that weren't really deleted and CSAM come to mind.

Who will claim to be smart enough to control these AI entities once they achieve singularity?
You will have other things to worry about when AI achieves Singularity!

He is an artistic. They are always subject to change.
Do you mean autistic? He does like to pretend he has that since it might make him seem like some kind of accidental genius. Really, he's someone who loves attention and wants to play the part of the role the media started to make of him...before he started opening his mouth and revealing he's really just a grandstander. Has anyone asked him how the hyperloop and the boring company are doing lately?

Going to guess you never followed up on what actually happened with those deleted photos? They were local only, a database error in the storage that didn't mark those files for deletion. The CSAM thing never happened, they warned before they did it and withdrew when their customers opposed it.

AI singularity might be better than the world of misinformation we see right now.
