iBooks and MacBooks (non-Pro) used to start at $999 years ago. That's a fact which your comment is overlooking

Apple _could_ make a sub-$1000 laptop, but they prefer to have a healthy profit margin instead. Mac laptops are very different from your average PC laptop.

With the latest problems their laptops are having, they are not that different anymore. The trackpad can’t be beaten by ANYONE, but the rest can be beaten from their competitors, but in the end it’s also the whole Mac/iOS ecosystem that is important and not so much the hardware on its own only... remember, it’s a combination of software and hardware that provides this unique Apple “experience”!

If Apple releases a USB-C to lightning cable, can I use the 67 watt Macbook Pro power adapter to charge my iPad?
Apple is already selling a USB-C to Lightning cable (possibly since the release of the USB-C-only 12" MB in 2015). And yes, you can use the 67 W MBP power adaptor to charge your iPad. Though it won't charge faster than with the 29 W 12" MBP power adaptor.

Doctors loved the iPad Mini. What most people didn't see was that the size of the iPad Mini fit perfectly in the lab coat pocket. My sister told me that everyone in her residency had one. My dad carried one on his patients rounds. I don't understand why they would drop that size. Not everyone wants a full sized iPad or iPad Pro.

Apple doesn't serve niche customers.

Who cares if the iPad mini fits in a pocket? Most people don't carry it that way. Surveys show the majority of tablet customers use their device at home for entertainment purposes.

It reminds me of the argument of how the discontinued 11-inch MacBook Air fit on airline tray tables or some other weird spaces.

I'm really excited that I've nearly finished migrating away from Apple. Ready for the hardware transition as devices come up for renewal. Frustration has outweighed reward for too long with Apple hardware. Last straw was a USB-C adaptor that had a book placed on it accidentally when plugged into a MBP. This managed to deform the MBP's frame! No more thousands forked out by me to buy the equivalent of aluminium foil. The competition has caught up IMO.

And for what it's worth, I've decided it's more socially responsible to buy a product from a company that doesn't evade tax at every opportunity.

If you are "really excited" to be done with Apple, why do you spend time keeping up with their products?

Picked up a Fire HD8 for $50 on Prime Day... My first non-apple product, ever. Holding it in one hand in bed while reading is pretty nice, thin, light, etc. It has its limitations but it was $ 5 0 . 0 0 !

It's tablets like these that killed the iPad mini, along with the popularity of phablets.

No one is willing to pay $399 for $299 for an iPad mini as an e-reader when FireHD does the job for a fraction the price.

Hence Apple could drop iPad Mini, and release iPad Pro 8.

iPad Pro 8
iPad Pro 10
iPad Pro 12

But because iPad 2018 is so capable, and a bargain, Apple could drop iPad Pro 10 entirely from the lineup and instead have

iPad 2018
iPad Pro 8
iPad Pro 12

And iPad Pro 8 would be first iPad with OLED display. And first OLED display with ProMotion. And the 12 would be a bit smaller that the current model, with 12.3" display.

Apple’s product lines are becoming a mess!
How so? Especially on the macOS side, the Product Lines are VERY well-defined. On the iOS side, it seems a little cluttered; but that's because Apple wants to keep at least one budget-priced model of both the iPad and iPhone.

The 13" MacBook Pro is the new MacBook Air.

Let's rewind time for a moment. It's Thursday, October 27, and Apple's event is under way.

Imagine that instead of introducing the new MacBook Pro, Apple unveiled a new MacBook Air. One that's 12 percent lighter, 13 percent smaller by volume and practically the same weight -- but manages to cram in a faster Intel processor, faster graphics, plus the far sharper, brighter and more colorful Retina Display the MacBook Air so desperately needed.

Sure, it starts at $1,500 rather than $1,000, but you get twice the solid-state storage for the price -- and you can double the RAM, quadruple the storage and get the awesome new Touch Bar secondary screenwith Touch ID fingerprint sensor if you're willing to pay even more.

How long has your MacBook Air had a 1.6GHz processor? This new one is 2.0GHz or 2.9GHz; there's even a 3.3GHz option.

And sure, it's got a thinner keyboard and only two (or four) general-purpose Thunderbolt 3 ports instead of handy full-size USB ports and SD card slots. But we, Apple, figured you'd rather have a more accurate keyboard and amazing single-cable Thunderbolt 3 docking options to go with your mobile MacBook Air lifestyle.

Now, you can pull your MacBook Air right out of your manila envelope and plug in a single cable to charge it, dock with your peripherals and power multiple monitors all at the same time.

Oh, and one more thing: we knew you'd like the MacBook Air so much, we built a 15-inch model. You won't believe how fast it is -- this Air has a quad-core CPU that's 50 percent faster than last year's MacBook Pro! The graphics are over twice as fast, and yet we've kept the same 10 hour battery life as the 13-inch version.

If you've ever wanted to edit photos or home videos on a MacBook Air, this computer's for you. Oh, and it comes standard with the Touch Bar and Touch ID, too.

We think you're going to love the new MacBook Air. It's the best MacBook we've ever made.
Not sure if you're praising the new MacBook Pros as being as thin and light as the original Air, or lambasting them for being somehow "Non-Pro".

If it's the former, that is a great point; if it's the latter, then your arguments are completely misguided.

Strange - keeping the Mini 4 around as is was the last thing I expected to happen. In my head the future of the iPad Mini looked like this, in order of probability:
1. Minor spec bump (upgrade to an A10 or A11 with few if any other changes)
2. Discontinue iPad Mini altogether
3. Major redesign, larger screen (around 8.5") in similar chassis with slim bezels and FaceID
4. Continue selling Mini 4 for another year

Guess it shows what I know...

With how Apple seems to be now, they'll probably just release another 12" MacBook, but with a 2nd USB-C port and slightly faster processors....

...and somehow find a way to raise the price yet again.

I sympathize with the "low end" and "lower price" concerns, but Apple seems less and less worried about that every single year.

My dream would be a MacBook Air SE with a Retina Screen and Force Touch Trackpad and literally no other changes.

I'll go get my pajamas and lay down now, as I'm only going to get that in my dreams.

Partially, you set yourself up for disappointment if you think you will be ‘terribly disappointed’. Just stay open-minded to see what they have to offer for their product lineup this year. Not every product has to appease to the consumer or be intended for them to like it.
...and when Apple DOES try to appease the consumer, we end up with dumb stuff like the 2017 iMacs, that SHOULD have had FOUR USB-C/TB3 Ports, instead of some dumb USB-A ports, which I would BET they stuck on there JUST because of the backlash from stupid consumers who are too lazy to clip a simple USB-C/USB-A adapter onto their USB cables, or, horror of horrors, just get a new USB-B to USB-C cable for their peripheral!

Then why are you trolling this Apple FAN site? Second-guessing your decision?

The thing that Apple calls „entry“ nowadays makes me question my salary lol

In an actual customer oriented world, they would just get rid of the MacBook Air and simply have a cheaper < 1.000$ entry MacBook and an MacBook Pro. Makes no sense to me to keep a 3rd option like an Air around. Even the iPad got the „iPad“ and the „iPad Pro“ Version just like the iPhone which should actually be called iPhone and „iPhone Pro“ in my opinion

Such a messy line up
So, you want LESS choice, then?

$160-$190 for a wireless charger? Who comes up with these prices over at Apple.......o_O

As an iPad Mini user, I would prefer if they went in the opposite direction. The 7.9" screen is in many ways the smallest, usable sized screen an iPad can have. I would like it if Apple stuck at that screen size and made the iPad Mini smaller, lighter, and thinner around it.

Incidentally the sort of design that Apple tends to be good at. Nobody cares about a smaller Mac Mini. But an even smaller iPad Mini would make the machine more attractive. It could become the LTE device to give to children before they are old enough for phones.

The 13" model will be the equivalent of the 2016/2017 MBP nTB, rebranded as MacBook.

So for 2018:

2018 13"/15" MBP: min quad core processor, min 256gb storage, Touch Bar, 4 TB3 ports, 2018 screen, 2018 Gen 3 keyboard.

2018 13" Macbook: min dual core processor, min 128gb storage, 2 TB3 ports, 2016/2017 screen, 2018 Gen 3 keyboard. Maybe apple will get clever with the colors?

The 12" MB is pointless compared to the 2016/17 nTB MBP, as is the MBA.

Touch Bar = MacBook Pro
nTB = Macbook

I don't get it. The current low-end Macbook is $1299. So for ~$100 less you get a larger screen and presumably a faster processor? If that's the case then Apple's product line-up is becoming even more confused.
