Oh interesting! I always assumed that Apple execs had to wear/use current models of everything, including accessories, in public appearances. It seems like Apple’s marketing department would look at interviews as potential advertising for current products. I actually like that she wore an older band. Shows that it is her watch and not just something she slapped on for the interview.

A few pages too late for such a cursed post but figured I’d share my experience. Bought a classic buckle planning to swap out the silver hardware for black. I thought with a 4th gen band that had a post running through the leather, I could remove the buckle and replace it as well. Turns out I way underestimated how much Apple really does not want anyone modifying their bands.
  1. Tried using a spring bar tool to detach the buckle. But, the buckle does not use a standard spring bar (nowhere for the tool to grab onto). In retrospect, I really should have seen that one coming. Apple never uses standard parts.
  2. Then decided to try cutting the buckle off where the spring loaded bar meets the metal square. The first pair of nippers I tried was too soft to cut through the bar and I ended up damaging them. Ordered a pair of tungsten carbide clippers and was able to cut the bar with ease.
  3. Went to push the bar through the leather only to discover Apple had freaking glued it into the leather.
  4. My last resort was to try cutting the bar again in the middle where the tongue is to see if I could remove it piecemeal. Turns out the bar is thicker there than it was where it attached to the metal square. So, not only did I damage the leather but I also broke my clippers.
End result: total failure, do not attempt. I’m mainly sad that I ruined the band. Saddle brown was such a nice color and there are so few classic buckles left out there in new/good condition. Really bummed that I ruined the band and now nobody can use it. If you want matching hardware, you are better off buying a 3rd gen CB and either dealing with the silver buckle or painting it.

Also, what the heck Apple!?

Can anyone name a green(ish) sport band that would be a good match with the new green iPhone 12? :)

Got a bit bored with work earlier on, so took an indulgent (but quick and dirty) collection shot. It's a composite, with the last three columns tacked on after the flip of the 'pages' in the storage wallets, hence the bands not all being in 'Rainbow' order. Some colour coding, as follows:

Orange - 42/44mm Sport Bands and Metal
Red - 42/44mm Woven Nylon & Nike
Green - All the 38/40mms

181 in total, with one more in the post. At the beginning of May, I had 15...

Just waiting to move house so I have the room for a better storage/display solution.

That sucks.

I have swapped the lugs on my Classic Buckles to Black so they match my SBSS S4 and was considering swapping the buckle hardware, but never could find a replacement in SB. Now I know to never bother and just live with the stainless.

I’m actually wondering about the experiences forum members here have with the Titanium S5. I remember reading disastrous stories about the watch surface scratching quite easily.

Yeah I’m annoyed that Apple went through seemingly unnecessary extra lengths to make it impossible to remove the buckle on the 4th gen band. I did find some clasps at Arrow and Board that match the look of the 1st-3rd gen Classic Buckle and use a spring bar. But, Apple has made it impossible to remove the bar on the 4th gen band so it’s a moot point.

I did find this old thread where someone used automotive paint to make the buckle a glossy black. But, I have no idea how that would hold up over time. I suspect it would at least pick up micro scratches fairly quickly like the Jet Black iPhone 7, and the paint may also chip. But, a straight swap of the buckle hardware is a no-go on any generation of the band.
