Yup it’s not the 200xs any more, when computers would double in performance every year…I’m seeing reports that it’s only a 10% performance difference. Not worth the hassle, I’ll wait until something more substantial is released.

These MacBooks are not for people who just purchased M2 MacBooks. That’s not how upgrading works.Well that was all a bit of a non event wasn't it.
Not wishing to be picky but something quickly started to bother me that I noticed again and again and again.
That was the constant comparisons to M1 and not M2
It's as if they know full well this isn't THAT much faster than an M2 so kept on comparing it to an M1
That's really weird.
When Nvidia launch their 5000 series cards next year? I expect them to talk about how much better they perform in comparison to their 4000 series cards and not constantly compare them to the 3000 series cards.
Let's be totally honest here, if your product today was so much better than your last product, that's all you would talk about. If it's not that much better, then thats the only reason why you'd constantly keep comparing it to the product before that, and against you very first attempt as making a chip.
The M1 (1st attempt at a desktop chip) Came out in November 2020
If you spoke to people then, and told them three years and two generations on from the new M1, the M3 would be "Up To" 30% faster in some select tasks then you'd probably have thought, noooo this is the 1st model, in 3 years time more progress than that will have been made.
Note: I'm not hating on M3 whatsoever, It's just the MASSIVE deal Apple are making considering 3 years of development, and constantly comparing todays brand new chip to your 1st 3 years old one in an attempt to make it sound amazing.
my friend - welcome to consumer debt. Most don’t even need a mbp for everyday tasks let alone upgrade their devices every couple years. But they’ll bust out their Apple/Credit card and happily be in debt. It’s tough to make responsible financial decisions (i.e. save money, save for retirement, don’t buy what you can’t afford, have a budget, etc.), and something we’re not taught here in US and I’m sure other countries as well.Yes, laptops have a lifespan, my 2013 macbook pro is going on for 10 yrs, I would have loved to have spent money on RAM upgrades, SSD upgrades, a new screen, but I could not, not upgrade capable, then after 10 yrs, have a decent laptop, I was forced to update to an air, would rather have bought the PRO, but it was not within my finances.. There a laptop not bought, I would have over the last 2 yrs of the macbook air, invested in upgrades, not done...
I would buy the base model M3, no question, if I could over the next 3 to 5 financial cycles, invest in upgrades, one cannot justify spending $3200 now, but $500 x 3 to 5 yrs, is about do-able.. Why can Apple not see the benefit of encouraging upgrading? No they will not know I did not buy a laptop, which is a pity, as they are great, but to outlay $3200 or over R60 000 to R100 000 for a laptop, I cannot justify, but to spend R3000 a year on updates/upgrades, that is viable...
Also, if we just take a step back, the M series of chips is just another marketing term to sell computers and make it sound like its some big event, which its not. It's a modest upgrade from the M2 which is why we got a 30 minute event where they rolled out the usual 100 billion transistors spiel etc. These MacBooks are not for people who just purchased M2 MacBooks. That’s not how upgrading works.
Me too, how did you know?I was right about a new Pro color
If only! As a former proud owner of several Thinkpads, those babies were actually black. Finally a Mac in ThinkPad black…
I mean, money kind of isn’t real to begin with.my friend - welcome to consumer debt. Most don’t even need a mbp for everyday tasks let alone upgrade their devices every couple years. But they’ll bust out their Apple/Credit card and happily be in debt. It’s tough to make responsible financial decisions (i.e. save money, save for retirement, don’t buy what you can’t afford, have a budget, etc.), and something we’re not taught here in US and I’m sure other countries as well.
But this is what the 24in. iMac is, a great everyday budget desktop computer and super for education purposes. Is M3 Macs can boot in Windows natively? If I like macOS interface better, I have an iPhone and iPad, BUT I'm still a gamer, is the M3 macs enough? Sorry but my 2020 i7 iMac is still very fast for everyday tasks, and I still can play the most recent PC releases. So yeah, intel macs are obsolete, right? Personally, I just think intel Macs re better overall computer and it is in fact the real definition of a desktop computer : A machine that could do almost all stuff relatively good.
The trash about M3 iMacs is that Apple won't even let you chose between M3 or the M3 Pro/Max versions. Its clear now that Apple treats iMac like their new budget low end computers when int he past, the 27' iMac were in between the low end models and the pro ones. And I won't talk about missing connectivity ports as well...
I wasn't "expecting" anything. I have an M1 MacStudio I got upon release and just got my wife an M2 Pro 16" MBPro – so I wasn't in the market for anything no matter what they released as far as computers.Every upgrade is a spec bump. I'm not sure what else you were expecting.
My business certainly needs the M3. I kept away from the M2 as I didn't think the upgrade would be worthwhile, and probably why Apple refer to the M1 performance in relation to the new M3, because that is the most relevant, especially for a desktop as unless people just upgrade for the ego you'd be unlikely to be able to justify buying a computer for a short time, and upgrading for the sake of it. We've been waiting to get 24 new iMac's to replace the M1, which has been such a super efficient computer. Yes we have a need for greater computing power in parts of the business, but for many users, the comparatively cheap iMac is a great front end for multiple situations.Other than to make it very clear M3 is here, the event was completely pointless. Talking about the number of transistors etc. They could have been talking about anything from the last 5 years and just dubbed in the M3 word and updated the graphs. So dry.
Also, and this is a genuine question, why do most people need an M3 over an M1 or an M2? Most people aren't graphic designers, or music/movie producers. Most Mac users open up a browser, check their mail, and look at the photos app. Its embarrassing to think people will upgrade to one of these just to sit in Starbucks looking cool while they randomly click around a MacBook they don't need 😆
Also, as a gamer is confuses me why they keep dipping one toe in gaming. The Mac is not a gaming machine like the PC (as much as I'd like it to be) and never will be.
Is a 14 inch or 16 inch iPad coming or not
I'd say they know exactly why...interesting that Apple featured Avid's Pro Tools more than Logic in this presentation.
