They already have one right now... it's called the iPhone 7 and it's their "new" budget phone. If you understand business at all then you must understand something called ROI (return on investment). There simply isn't enough ROI to engineer, design, market and manufacture a brand new small screened "budget" device. Trying to get that return by selling a "premium" small screened phone at a high price would fail miserably in the market.

The SE is dead. If you need a new budget phone the iPhone 7 (or 8 if you want a step-up) are your best options.

Tell that to my wife, while her SE is still going strong, she has already asked about compact Android phone options if the SE didn’t get an update. I’ve used an Android phone since I retired my ip4, but I’m not looking forward to transitioning her to Android.

Except they absolutely are. Some people prefer heavier premium feeling phones and have no issue with battery life on the larger devices especially since they last all day and charge overnight. Others may feel otherwise.

More is more, that's not subjective. Being fine with less battery life is subjective, but battery life has a direct quantitative measure

"Premium feeling" is subjective, and also a stupid measure because both phones are made from the same materials, just the SE weighs less.

We know. No need for a 30 page deposition. No one is asking for your alibi Macrumors.

I know that's not what SE fans want to hear, but that's just how it works. I think it's also safe to assume that if the majority of these SE customers are die hard iPhone buyers then they will purchase whatever is offered (around the SE price point) as a replacement.

I am "a diehard iPhone SE fan" and no I won't be purchasing whatever is offered at the same price point. The problem I have is I prefer the form factor of iPhone SE but there are no viable replacements. Even when looking to android, it's extremely hard to find a 4" screen and to find a 4" screen that's worth buying is impossible (save for iPhone SE). So, I'll be taking advantage of EOL pricing for SE so that when my current one breaks (purchased day 1 of iPhone SE) I'll have a new replacement. Heck, I may even just swap logic boards at that point so my new one will still be running iOS 10.3.3 (what my current one has).

And for more info: I owned iPhone 6 day 1 until iPhone 6s came out. When iPhone SE was released I said I'd never buy a bigger phone again. When iPhone 8 came out I bought that day one but returned it two days later cause I hated it. Gave the iPhone X a try on its Day 1, but returned it 14 days later (definitely better than iPhone 8, but not preferable to iPhone SE).

iPad
The iPad renders shown here are absolutely inaccurate. Apple would not design a sharp edged device when all other new generation mobile devices (iPhones and Watches) are round edged. This would not fit in the line up. I more believe that the next generation (with face recognition) will be designed to look more like a super-large iPhone, but without the glass back, without notch and larger bezels.

MacBooks
I do not believe that Apple is going to launch a new version of the MacBook Air beside the new MacBook line-up. The MacBook Air will probably discontinue and we'll also see a new, larger size MacBook in the same design.

Mac Mini
Maybe there could be a Mac Mini Pro (space gray) in future – that would make sense, especially when the Mac Pro should be discontinued one day.

iMacs
I really hope that we'll finally see a new iMac design, with a more contemporary look. Smaller bezels are due long time. Face ID model would be a cool feature on an iMac.

Mac mini

Apple is said to be working on a refreshed version of the Mac mini that's focused on pro users.

If that is true, than that wont be a Mac mini at all. It will be called something else.
Anyway, we will see, if a "new headless desktop computer" gets updated October this year or not.

I would say, it won't be updated, but that is just me.
Maybe next year, when the "pro" machine gets released as Apple promised.

What does "budget" have to do with it? The SE is Apple's best phone at any price. I'd happily pay $1000 for a new one in the same form factor with revised internals, NO Face ID, NO 3D Touch, NO oversized screen, NO opposing Lock and Volume buttons, and NO thin, flimsy build quality (i.e. everything that plagues the other, lesser iPhones). The 7 and 8 are certainly not a "step up" from the refined quality and enhanced user experience offered by the SE.

I didn’t watch the keynote, so what were the « gather ‘round » reference and the ring/coil visual about after all?

I didn’t expect new Macs as this was expectedly an iPhone-centric event, but since they updated the Watch, the lack of iPad Pro annonce and, more importantly, the Airpower mat make the event feel improvised and weird.

Edit : oh and they killed the SE after introducing only huge phones, definitely subpar in my book - I guess the only small phone now is the non-Plus 7 or 8.

AirPower is a really odd goof up. It's really unusual that they announced it so long ago and still can't get it out the door.

but the iPhones were sleepers.

I've seen this sentiment a couple times and it goes to show how clueless and spoiled we are about some amazing tech. By far—by FAR—the most interesting portion of the phones was the new silicon. I don't play basketball, but Home Court? Come on. Sleepers? 7nm fabs are sleepers? What?

It's really odd that people seem to get more excited about arbitrary redesigns than legitimate technology. (Of course, a radical redesign does come and people want the old thing instead.)

Stop getting your direction from shared holders, and do what Steve Jobs did and get direction from customers.

Right. Steve Jobs didn't listen to shareholders because, who cares right?

If anyone didn't listen to customers, it was Jobs. His entire philosophy was rooted rather specifically in giving customers what he thought they needed rather than what they wanted, very much like Henry Ford.

a headphone jack is a way better feature than 3D Touch

This is hardly objective. I'd take 3D Touch in a second over a headphone jack. People, it's been two years. It's time to let it go. Use an adapter or get another phone. She's never coming back.

I've been kinda hoping for a new SE, but I got used to not-really-that-much-larger 6/6S/7/8 profile. Having a watch changed how I use my phone though, so the profile really matters a lot less now. My phone spends more time on my desk or in my bag than in my pocket these days.

I probably don't understand business at all, but it's not about budget for many, it's the smaller size that folks like. Folks on a budget usually buy a good used phone. I've done it twice.

Usually, an "S" year brings some Engineering Accomplishment.

Like a 7nm fabrication process, faster processing, and reduced power consumption? In what ways are these continued advancements year after year (all while battery tech is basically frozen) not engineering accomplishments? (And significant ones at that.)

You mean like the FDA approved and AHA endorsed Apple Watch with ECG capability? A first in a watch, but apparently not innovative?
Don't wear a watch like more than 50% of the population these days (guestimate). I hate anything on my wrist.

As for the phones...?
Meh!
Nothing announced in the event that would make me spent even $1.00 with Apple.

I think that there needs to be a lot of new blood at the top. It just seems to be more of the same every year.

Imagine if today Apple announced the retirement of the iPhone 7, and introduced the iPhone SEx. Essentially the iPhone SE form with iPhone 7 internals, the iPhone X edge to edge display, and a headphone jack at $599. Hipsters would be camping for days.

It'd be my next phone. I was actually hoping edge-to-edge would bring a smaller form factor. With that said, I feel like the group that wants a smaller than 6ish form factor is a vocal minority. If anything, the fact that Apple popped out the Max indicates the huge phone thing isn't going anywhere. Apple isn't a trillion dollar company because they listen to whiners on forums. The market in general doesn't seem particularly interested in compact phones. Heck, among my own group I'm in the monitor sporting the non-Plus versions of the last few.

If there was a decent enough size demand for these smaller phones, someone would be all over it. It's not like Apple is afraid to put out a smaller, underpowered product if demand is there. Look no further than the 12" MacBook.

While I don’t doubt at this point in time most people genuinely prefer larger phones, I can’t help but wonder how many people go for the bigger phones mainly because of a perception that small phones are old.

Or there are people like me who can grip a 12.9 inch iPad like a telephone who appreciate a larger iPhone.

And no it’s not true.
