The pricing of the MBA is really strange. If you upgrade to 16 GB ram and 512 GB, you are almost looking at the same price of the base model 14 inch MBP with the same specs in Euro.

Define „almost“. Because the difference is still roundabout 300 Euros. Plus the Air is in some respects (weight, battery life) actually better than the 14 Pro.

One laptop is thin and light while the other one isn’t.

Exactly. Different machines for different use cases.

I’m waiting to see how good Stage Manager is with an external monitor before deciding to buy a laptop or not. However, what I’d really love is an M1 12 MacBook.

Precisely. I was going to get the $1499 M2 Air, but Best Buy had the 14" MacBook Pro on sale for $1799. Faster processor, twice the RAM, same 512GB SSD, larger screen, Mini-LED, ProMotion 120Hz, etc... it was a no-brainer.
Since I do not need the faster speed, and I value a lighter laptop with superior battery life, I wouldn’t opt for the M1 Pro. But, I purchased the M1 Air a year ago. I think the M1 Air on launch was the best purchase anyone could’ve made for quite some time. Definitely superior to buying the M2 Air in a couple of weeks.

Got an M1 Air last week and saved myself €550.

M2 is a great machine no doubt, but the price difference in Europe is outrageous.
Same in the UK. And in fact ROtW outside of the US (not sure about Canada). I feel ROtW is paying the cost of keeping prices reasonable* in the US while inflation rockets. Once they used to just swap the currency sign, even though that was still short-changing us, now they don't even do that.

*by Apple standards.

So incredibly torn right now between the 512GB Macbook Air M2, and the base Macbook Pro 14. I don't think I need the extra 8GB of RAM day to day, but the better screen / port situation set against the better form factor of the Air is really giving me pause for thought, and twice the RAM just feels like a nice thing to keep in the back pocket.

The M2 MBP reaches 108 degrees with a fan, so I wonder what the Air is going to do about heat dissipation. Not only the SSD to worry about here.

MBA M2 will be clocked down for sure. It is without a fan so Apple definitely needs to limit clock speed when intensity increases. Makes perfect sense. Whoever needs to do that kind of work should go with MBP 14 anyways. MBA is purely for casual users...media consumption, document editing, surfing!

With the media engine stuff on the M2 it will be pretty capable, albeit with slower export times, when it comes to media editing too.

Capable for sure but not the best machine to do those things with passive cooling. it will thermal throttle. But someone who does media editing occasionally, it should be fine. There is a trade off with passive cooling and thinner design.

Its funny seeing people arguing for notch or touchbar, as for me what really matters is…MagSafe! I didn’t like to charge those other cables. MagSafe felt obvious, then premium and now… irreplaceable! The lack of it degrades my work environment.

agreed - magsafe is an omission that I really wish the MBP13 actually had, and wish Apple would've added it back in with the M2 update (can't believe they ever abandoned magsafe in the first place tbh, as it's such an incredibly useful feature to so many people)!

fortunately, you can add magsafe functionality to laptops which don't have it via a simple adapter - just search for "usb c magnetic adapter" and you'll find tons of options for ~$10-25 or so... :)

👍 Agreed, a pro machine will always be a better machine for serious and extended intensive computing needs. But the M2 MBA will likely exceed (or come close) to performance of those pro machines from just a generation (or two) ago.

You can probably count the number of people who actually want the touchbar on two hands, and all the lot of them post here.

per Apple's own statement, the MBP13 (which has a touchbar) is the 2nd best selling laptop out there (behind only the MBA) - that kinda implies there's probably more than 10 people out there that actually like the touchbar, even if you don't... 😜

OMG this. Back when I was younger (c15 years ago) I would wait until a work trip to the US to buy an Apple laptop, as the Pound Sterling to US dollar ratio made it much cheaper back then. With Pounds to Dollar pricing in the past few years it has been annoying. But now the price in pounds is actually greater than the dollar price, this is maddening and unfair. It makes me want to boycott the company. Our poor European cousins, too, with that price in Euros.

Shame, as I sold some tech recently so was looking forward to a brand new MBP M2 redesign... and then was nonplussed with the lack of redesign and the bloody Touchbar!

No. It's the second best selling Mac laptop because it's the cheapest laptop with Pro in the title. That's all. In the states it also sell in huge volumes to companies, whereas in ROtW its mostly Windows. Most people either hate the touchbar or don't care.

1199$ + sales taxes in the US.
1262$ + VAT in the UK.
1311$ + VAT in Germany.

Base configuration at the current exchange rate.

Not an outrageous difference in price, I‘d say.
And certainly no higher non-US premium than in the past. Though if you can get the previous generation M1 Air on „legacy pricing“, that seems comparatively attractive.

PS: And don‘t forget longer statutory warranties due to civil/consumer protection laws in Europe.

Not sure what exchange rate you're looking at but currently £1 is worth US$1.21 so something costing $1199+Tax in the US should be £990 + VAT in the UK. VAT is current 20% so that's £1,188. The actual cost though is £1,249. So that's an extra £61, or about US$74. Not a huge amount of money but as you move up the scale so does the difference.
