Facebook is a joke. All that company cares about is its tracking and ad services, the actual customer be damned...

The users are part of the product being sold, in the form of data used for targeted advertising—they are not the customer. The customers are the one who pay money for that info and for advertising. Advertisers are the customer.

One may argue that users are customers that pay with their personal info and usage data, but the real customers pay with money, not data. Data is the product, farmed from users.

I cannot recall the last time I even paid attention to or clicked on a targeted ad. Most right now are scams trying to sell face masks to people freaking out over the pandemic. People should be wearing masks but the sudden crop of over priced fancy face masks is alarming.

I made the mistake of looking at one laptop online and suddenly Facebook is beating me over the head with laptops I have absolutely no desire to buy.

There are targeted ads and then there is marketing groveling which is just sad.

If you have a Facebook profile I challenge you to try what I did.

disable your account and see how long you can go without needing to contact someone on it or look something up. When you need to, reactivate your account, get what you need, and then disable it.

I did that for a year and at the end, realized it had been 6 months and I no longer needed it. Permanently deleting my profile felt so good.

I got so much time back in my day now and no more food pictures or people trying to flex (literally and figuratively).

As much as I work for a company that could be negatively impacted by this move - because targeted ads are good for business - I don’t appose this what so ever. And considering Facebooks two fingers to the recent complaints around hate for profit - anything that damages their ad revenue is good news in my view.

Everyone wants to pile on FB as the scumbags (they are) but remember it's Apple who designed iOS and allowed this tracking to go on for 13 years. If anyone is the bad guy, it's apple enabling the scumbags. Or maybe they're all scumbags (wake up!)

Anything that makes the ads sent to me be worth less money is a good thing. I know I will see ads, but I do not appreciate targeted advertising. It is even MORE ANNOYING than non-targeted advertising.

Complaining about it will only draw attention to everybody that you actually track people’s activities. There are a fair amount of people that don’t know that.

All I can say is good riddance to cross-site tracking and other privacy-invasive concepts. I only hope this is a trend that transforms that industry to value privacy. It won’t as I’m sure these companies will invent new workarounds but I sure hope we can be truly untraced by advertisers. Nothing was wrong with the old days (of 10-15 years ago and before) with generalized advertising. They certainly made plenty of money off of that.
