How can we have facts about Apple? They are the least transparent company in the history of the world. No one really knows exactly what Apple is tracking. And since the new regulations won't affect Apple's Ad platform we probably never will.
LOL-Apple’s “ad platform.” Good one. You are cracking us up.

Of course is Apple about profit. But also about privacy.
And now that Apple is restricting Facebook's ability to get even more profit from your data, Facebook says it is about Apple making profit. Which, in this case, is not true. Apple does not make more profit by giving YOU the OPTION to not be followed by Facebook.
Facebook collects no data off me as I don't use it. And of course Apple supposedly cares about privacy because they make their money off of $1000 phones and $500 headphones. Not every company is Apple though. Facebook makes a service which obviously a huge portion of the world uses. They deserve to get paid just like Apple does. Not every company can be Apple and make high priced electronics and have the highest profit margins in the industry. Guess which company benefited the most off of Covid? Which companies value shot through the roof since Covid? Apple! Some companies provide services such as Facebook and Google and have to make money through advertising.

Love this kind of thinking. Facebook is bad because they provide a service I use for free, but they generate 99% of their income through advertising. Apple is good because I give them thousands and thousands of dollars for all my gadgets which become obsolete in a year, but they still had a ad platform which is not subject to any regulation. It's ok that Apple does it because they don't generate as much of their income from advertising as Facebook does. Damn do the cultists on here even stop and think about their rationalizations before they type them out?
I am still running a 2010 Mac Pro and use an iPhone 6s. Just because products improve every year does not obsolete the older ones. Bull statement like azzmo's are just trolling.

I'm a little confused. As far as I can see, Apple isn't prohibiting anyone from intentionally choosing to have their privacy violated through tracking.

The only issue that I can see is that Apple should have implemented this years ago. Nobody I know of wants to be tracked, but if they do want to be tracked then they should have to intentionally choose to be tracked.

Is Facebook complaining because Apple is prohibiting users from having their privacy violated and being tracked? I don't think so. But perhaps I'm not understanding something. What exactly is FB complaining about? That we have a choice to decide whether we want are privacy violated or not?

We are allowed to have curtains on our windows that we can use to protect our privacy. Shouldn't we have the same with tracking, to be able to explicitly have the curtains open or closed and to be asked each time we install an app?

Could someone please help me to understand what the problem is?

Still, it is a fallacy that ad platforms need to track you to serve relevant ads to you.

Remember all of those advertising agencies and businesses which went out of business between 1700 - 1998*, because they knew very little about their customers?

Then, thank god, the internet came along and saved them all because no-one was making any profit before they could track people

*Yes, I did pluck those numbers out of thin air.

Is there a Breakdown about how much "money" Apple makes off said $1,000 phones and $500 headphones? I assume they just want you in their exo-system to subscribe to their services/buy movies etc. which pays off far more in the long term over a simple $500 purchase.

But, ya know, people complain anyway.

Yeah, apple is trying to get me to pay 2x the price for their products and services by trying to scared me about my precious privacy. I don't care if best buy knows I'm interested in buying some cheaper headphones.
I wish it was just Best Buy that had a use for your data. Its been used for political purposes as well. Its being used for a whole lot of stuff. But if you're fine with that. Then you have the right to opt in. No one will stop you from doing that. So why are you worried?

The problem is that Apple will not be following the same rules they are requiring all other companies to follow.

Shh don't say that. You can't go about pointing about facts on this site. We will not stand for it. Apple is the only good company in the world. You are not allowed to point out what other companies do to add value to the world. /s
You still conveniently ignore a screenshot from an IOS device (that was shared with you few times in this thread) that shows information about Apple Ad network not tracking and users having the ability to turn off personalized ads? Why is this?

Personally, I don't see a problem with holding Apple to the same standard. But it is IMO a mistake to put Apple and Facebook on the same level of privacy / tracking infractions. That does not make me a member of an Apple cult or anything, but rather is realistic.

Of course no one knows the exact percentage. Apple is not a transparent company to say the very least. But they do enjoy the highest profit margins in the industry. What those exactly are, Apple would guard with their lives.

People love to point fingers at Facebook and google but they never realize how different the web would be without them (and their ads). Paywalls everywhere. No free content at all. Sites like this (macrumors) wouldn’t exist of course.

Actually, I remember the web very well in the days before Google and Facebook. Other than dial-up being bloody slow, it worked rather well.

I never said they are the same. Of course Apple doesn't have to do the same level of tracking Facebook does as it charges top, top dollars for all their devices. BUT they should at the very least be held to the same standards they hold other companies to.

Oh boy. The ethics of consumerism. Which capitalist has better morals, Tim Apple who's made friends with Trump or Zuck who's long allowed false claims supporting him...and that's just related to how their companies work with the pres, but yeah, lets support one or the other during their bickering. They're both pretty awful though

Which company gave away millions of facemasks during covid? Apple! By the way, you don't have to use Facebook to get data collected by Facebook. See this link and many others https://www.wired.com/story/ways-facebook-tracks-you-limit-it/

Question - will Apple play by the same rules? Will we be able to disable ad tracking for Apple apps as well?
A valid question. However Apple uses our information internally under a much tighter lock and key than facebook or others. Yes Apple does profit from that info but its not sold to the highest slimy bidder unlike facebook. It is used to improve their products and services. Is apple walking a fine line? Sure. But so far they haven't crossed it. Also, Apple is WAY more open about it than others too.

Yes the world was a much better place before social media. But that doesn't change the fact that the majority of planet earth uses Facebook. So obviously they see value in it and since Facebook created something which most of the world's population values, they should get paid for doing that. Just like Apple created the iPhone which changed the world and it made them a $2T company.

What kind of screwy thinking is this? Do you pay Facebook for using their app? Do you pay Facebook for the free advertising they do for every business on there? Crazy thinking. Of course they are going to monetize you!!!! You are using a free service and expecting them to not make any money. How about you go into your job today and tell your boss, "Hi boss I am going to start working for you for free. I don't want to make any money off of my hard work"
Bleh blah. Yet no negotiation was met in full terms of agreement of what data would be used and for said companies. Sorry my life accomplishments was a lot of hard earned work. So to make money off my likeness I and everyone else in that thinking should be paid.

kardashian - a brand name of an image.
theyre in a midst of changing partners so new deals n use of fan/member info collected for sale at new terms.
the exchange fans get a fantasy tale to live through vicariously in the kardashian family lifestyle. They get clout some societal power and more riches. In this the terms between the user consuming for free what is provided knows that their getting value as the hosts of that entertainment also get value.

your work for free there is no intrinsic value.

Oh the irony of Facebook accusing Apple of doing this so they can make a profit when Facebook sold its figurative soul for profit long ago. Facebook is mad because it hurts their profit. They think they are entitled to this information -- THEY ARE NOT.

And to those who say "Oh, those Apple fanboys don't think Apple has to play by the same rules" have clearly never used an iPhone which asks permission for tracking ANYTHING about you and even when they do gather information they do not tie it to your user ID, but do it anonymously. If I turn off tracking then "iAd" (assuming anybody is still using that) sends me ads that are not personalized.

Tracking of any kind should be Opt-In only, and clearly presented. Not buried in some EULA legalese.

These companies have been abusing us for way to long. If your site is so wildly popular and useful, then it should be sustainable with a subscription. If not, it should go the way of the dinosaur. Stealing my information is not permissible.

Easy. Don't use Facebook and then they can't make any money off of your supposed famous likeness. I'm sure Facebook is just rolling in the money based off of using your likeness. You are using a free service which is subsidized via your targeted advertising. Don't want them to use your likeness, don't use Facebook.
