Why any new features?

GPS to enable all the location apps.
Camera to take photos. No better viewscreen than the Touch. With GPS you can geotag your photos, then email them with "This is what I saw, and I was standing (here) when I saw it". Open one of those photos and Google Maps can show you the location.
Mic to enable voice recording, VOIP, and voice command. Throw in speech to text for fun.
Speaker to let us hear what's on the Touch without having to fish out our earbuds. Also handy with VOIP.
Bluetooth to allow wireless headphones, wireless printing, wireless keyboard, wireless file transfer, and wireless remote control of the Touch.

Apple won't do everything, as it would leave nothing for next year's model. If I had to prioritize, I'd like:

Bluetooth
Speaker
GPS
Camera
Mic

In that order.

Apple and AT&T better get the current GPS figured out right first. My iPhone keeps showing me in Houston Texas.

Wait once dern minute there pardner... If Apple says you're in Houston Texas and AT&T says you're in Houston Texas then daggumit YOU ARE IN HOUSTON TEXAS my friend... just sit yerself down in a quiet corner somewhere and just try not gettin yersef hurt!

With the data networks well in place, a data-enabled Touch would actually make a lot of sense. Some of us just don't want a phone built into the device but would be just as happy with a go-anywhere data connection for sure.
Add me to that list of peeps who want a go-anywhere data connection. That's why I've held off on the current iTouch (along with a camera, speakers, microphone, GPS, and more).

BJ

How could it have GPS? The iPhone uses cell-assisted GPS. Would Apple use regular GPS for the Touch??

And maps are downloaded from Google when needed. Would Apple provide a service or option for downloading city maps via Apps Store? I doubt they would leave a key feature's functionality to a 3rd party.

I would like to see speakers and a mic though. But for hardware I could only see a case redesign at best.

They could...

Make it bigger, physical screen size wise.
Support 802.11n.
Support support full video download.
Give it a camera!
Give it a microphone!
Support Windows Mobile? Nah...
Give it GPS?

So many tasty options... YUM!

hey, if you put all, it would not be ipod touch anymore. it's beyond. GPS is nice touch but is drains battery life faster. plus, in order to use GPS, you always have to connect with internet or cellular signal. but ipod touch is not phone. even only data plan can be purchased, I think that it would be wasted your money. I think that we enjoy lots of apps after 2.0. in terms of hardware request, enhanced wifi, speaker will be fine. camera? I don't know.

Multiple colored plastic backs, similar to Nano colors.

maybe. but no neon or flower power.. may be face plates?

But iPods have always been about fun and kids and music and exciting colors. If they want the touch to become more popular than the nano (and why wouldn't they?) they to start offering them in multiple colors.

dont just please the kids. they neeed to learn they cant get what they want in life...

I would also really like to see a 3g data chipset in it, but no phone. I know it won't happen, but my parents would have gotten me an iPhone 3G if it didn't have a $70 a month price tag. Data plans are $20, and it would be awesome if Apple decided to give the touch 3G data, but like I said it won't happen until hell freezes over.

Don

if steve stops being so light headed then yeah it will. untill them...

I don't see anything big happening to the iPod touch. I have one, and I like it the wayy it is. GPS, I guess, would be a cool feature. A camera is for the iPhone.

who says? a camera is a camera but someone chose to put it in phones. it wouldnt hurt for the touch to get one..

I could definitely see camera and GPS (since tons of the apps use the two) but bluetooth? What purpose would that serve on an iPod Touch?

lots. dare I say wireless transfer of music and video to the device. or may be music sharing? Share music with other ipod owners.

I think Apple should diverge the iPhone and iPod touch lines otherwise the touch will always be the bastard child of the iPhone. I'd like to see it more focused on being the new Newton for Apple. GPS might be nice since you can't triangulate with cell towers. But forget the camera. Bluetooth would be nice to sync without those pesky cords. But lets see some iPod only features. Come on Apple, let's see some more innovation.

I'd like to see them get in to "airtunes" where you can wirelessly over wi-fi or bluetooth share music or video or even pictures and other content you have on the pod. as well as wireless snyc when transfering stuff to the ipod. Digital FM or satellite tuner perhaps?

TOh and by the way Apple, if you are going to introduce a 2MP camera to the Ipod T, don't bother. It's simply not worth it. Can't see it happening anyway.

who says it not worth it? Shoukld we all go back to the old ipods that were just made for music? NO.

it'd be sad to see the stainless steel back go from the ipod touch if it follows the iphone 3g's design. it's an apple trademark. everyone hates it, but without it, ipods wouldn't be ipods. they'd be some cheap plastic thing. apple needs to keep some of their quality in their products before they become just another low-end manufacturer.

erm..... the new aluminum and glass is much more green in my opinion. also, it wasnt an apple trademark, lots of people did it. Apple did away from the white and people didnt complaned. sure, some did but no one really cares...

so kid, learn to do some research first....

- Speaker probably isn't a big deal as you have accessory options available, ie headphones, external docks, portable speakers.

Not evereyone wants to carry other crap around. headphones arnt helpful when sharing. you are forgetting that people actully leave their house now a days....

If anyone see the latest pictures that come in an iPhone from factory, will note that you can see a narrow device, like an iPhone Nano, or an iPod Touch Nano ?

mmmm looks almost like an early shot of the old iphone....

hey, if you put all, it would not be ipod touch anymore. it's beyond.

thats the point. When apple added video, lots complained that the ipod is no longer a music device. now they are happy. with the ipod touch things changed once more. its an all in one multimedia device. and NOt just some other music player

I'd love a iPod Touch with a data plan. Just for the simple fact of having email in my pocket. I doubt it will happen too, but who knows about that. It really would allow for VOIP apps to come to the forefront.

It's hard to imagine they'll add much more to the Touch than the iPhone has, since it would fragment their development platform.

So bluetooth, gps, camera, microphone all seem like possibilities.

arn

Again, for a VOIP app, a mic is pretty much all that is needed. GPS is an awesome thing to have, but can a GPS work without some type of monthly bill? Bluetooth would be awesome, since it would finally pave the way to allow wireless syncing and the possibly of a bluetooth keyboard.

So this would imply that the new iPod touch would be released at or after firmware 2.1 and before the next version.

Anyone have an estimated release date of 2.1?

I'm thinking that the new iPods could come before the new notebooks.

They are announced at a event in September. I'd guess maybe Apple would announce everything then if notebooks are not released by the end of August.

And hopefully 2.1 will be out soon. 2.0 is buggy, like woa.

I hope to see...

  • GPS
  • Bluetooth
  • Camera
  • Speakers

This is now getting me excited! September can't come fast enough.
I'll sell my iPod Touch on eBay for this new one.

Just quoted this because this is my wish list too. A camera add some interesting possibilities. Maybe by putting in a 3+ megapixel camera, Apple could draw in some people who are looking for a camera

iPod2,1 suggests to me that it will be a whole new iPod, and not just a features upgrade (considering that the move from iPhone 1 to iPhone 3G only changes the second digit).

Could this be signalling the Mac tablet that's been rumored for so long?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe, but doubtful. Although if ture it could mean that the tablet would run OS iPhone instead of OS X. (When will they change that to something like OS Portable or something. OS iPhone is killing me here.

My thinking is that we will see:
GPS
Mic
Camera (>3 MP)
32/64 gb.

For extra points:
Bluetooth
Data Plan (optional)
Camera (<3 MP)
Bigger Screen (1/2 inch+)

If I wanted a phone, would I be looking at the iPod touch?

If I didn't want to pay $2000 or so for a contract that I didn't need, would I be looking at the iPhone?

I felt this needed to be reinstated.

Quite simply, the iPhone and the iPod Touch are two completely different products. One has a phone, with a very expensive 2-year plan, the other doesn't. As long as that distinction remains, the two products could be identical, or the Touch could have additional features beyond the iPhone, and it will not matter one bit.

Bluetooth and GPS

The two things that Apple can add to the iPod Touch to make it a game changer is Bluetooth and GPS.

GPS allows the position-based programs designed for iPhone in the App Store to be used for iPod Touch. Plus, it allows Touch to compete with the growing portable GPS market that Garmin and TomTom are into. (Hey, they're putting multimedia features like MP3 capability into their GPS units. Why not add a GPS to an iPod Touch?)

Bluetooth allows the Touch to be tethered to a bluetooth equipped cell phone from ANY manufacturer and wireless provider. Perfect for people who rather stick with their current wireless supplier or are happy with their current phone, but want the features of the iPhone. Sneaky little way for Apple to keep their exclusivity with AT&T, but yet make a product that would appeal to other customers.

Plus, you can transfer pictures and files from the phone's camera to an iPod Touch with bluetooth.

You can also do some of the same tricks that currently is being done with the MyBlu device (http://www.myblu.biz/)

Add Bluetooth and GPS to an iPod Touch, and you have an interesting device.

(Discontinue the iPod Classic, and have an iPod Touch with a hard drive, GPS, and Bluetooth, and that would be awesome. There's your Tablet.)

Bluetooth for use with BT headphones-eliminating a need for a bt dock connector accessory and as a secondary mode for iTunes remote.

Perfect for Sony DR-BT series or other brands.

I for one would love if Apple allowed the iPod Touch to connect with my 3G data modem. I hoped that somehow, someone would allow the dock connector to be used as a USB host and write a version of internet connect so I could just plug my dongle in and have broadband wherever I go.

I don't need an expensive phone contract- I pay £7.50 a month for 5GB of mobile broadband but I don't always want to lug my laptop around with me and can't always guarantee free wi-fi.

I can but dream.....

don't waste your time making stuff up the most is more storage and a speakerphone. maybe a camera. gps on the iphone is agps and thats specific to cell phones they're going to continue using your wifi location to find where you are. theyre never going to throw in everything you want because it raises cost and what will they do in their next update.

Wait? So if I want my Touch to beep when I have a meeting or something, I'm supposed to lug around a set of portable speakers just to hear it?

Not evereyone wants to carry other crap around. headphones arnt helpful when sharing. you are forgetting that people actully leave their house now a days....

Well, maybe other posters would clarify what exactly they are looking for when they say "speakers"? Ok, a generic speaker to provide audio feedback ala a pc speaker is fine. Full on speakers so you do not need anything else?

Still not likely to happen. You need space within the device for one, and maybe you both forget the rest of us aren't interested in you listening to your music players without ear phones which you would likely be carrying anyway as those earphones which equate to crap weigh you down so much.

My apologies for forgetting that people leave their houses, I will try to remember this when i am driving to work tomorrow, you know like when I leave my house.

Its called sharing with your friends. Some of us have friends you know. May be you and your girlfriend/boyfriend want to watch a movie together in bed? Its not about having it play out loud its just about sharing. My friends sometimes want to listen to my ipod and instead of sharing the headphones, just have the external speaker play them. I dont really like having my friends put my headphones in their ears. whats so bad about that? You woried everyone will play their music from the speaker? PSP has an external speaker......

Earphones dont weigh as much as this external speakers or docks. so they wont count.

more for less

I might actually buy iPod Touch if it had decent GPS with navigation software. Also better sound quality wouldn't hurt, it is an MP3 player after all. I have heard a lot of people complain about the sound quality - I haven't tried one myself though.
The price should be lowered too. 289 euros for the current 8GB model is just too much.

Sound is good if you have a decent pair of headphones. Apples stock phones arnt that good. If your a sound freak, then get a bose set. I got mine for 95.99 it just fits right in the ear. beats those crappy $5 ones from target or walmart

If the Touch had GPS and bluetooth (for GPRS/3G through phone), it would be everything I currently need for a mobile device.

Won't hold my breath, though.

She's 12 and she's complaining that she has a $400 techie's dream? Wow, if I was her age I'd be happy with an iPod Shuffle and a chocolate bar.

LOL... So would I, at her age.

But this is our fault as parents in this new tech age. To fit in and not be labeled as lame or not with it, she HAS to have a cell phone, iPod, or some other 'high-end' MP3 player, a cool camera (which also plays music, to get around school rules of no iPod like music players), a laptop because the school requires her to do homework and research on it, etc...

I hate the fact I have to deal with it. Like you, when I was 12, I was happy to have a paper route and making a few dollars a week.

Off topic, but oh well.

Mike

64gb Please!!!!!!

If they finally bump it to 64GB it'll be larger than my ancient 40GB third gen ipod... and therefore it would not be a step backwards, but many steps forward, and I would buy it.

But I doubt they will.

Actually the only difference originally between iphone and touch was one had the camera & phone part, and the other had more storage. so if they go with that.. then they probably won't upgrade the capacity since it's already double the largest iphone... but maybe gps and 3G...

but pleeeeeease 64GB!!!

i highly doubt a camera on an iPod thats a iPhone exclusive feature imo

plus a iPod with 3G r u kidding me?
