Or the company with $200 billion in cash knocking about that regularly dishes out sermons about user experience that are too stingy to provide the cable. All a matter of perspective.

You do realize that Apple is big about being "green" and eco friendly, right? The amount of waste that adding an extra cable that a minuscule number of people would use (even among those who COULD actually use it) would be utterly ridiculous.

All of the people who are bitching about this seriously need to get a life. If you ACTUALLY have one on these USB-C machines (which I am sure very few of you do,) you have other methods of plugging this in to the machine (adapter, C to Lightning cable, etc.) Otherwise you are not using flash drives, external HDD's or other older stuff you didn't just recently buy.

To those saying the negativity on this forum is disgusting, I completely agree with you. But unfortunately it goes further than just here. The entire internet has essentially gone to crap over the past few years. I don't know if it is the new generation of young people jumping in and spewing trash or what, but Twitter is largely a cesspol of negativity, Reddit is close to it, and many other forums that I post on have taken the same turn for the worst. All the ignoring in the world won't fix anything, cause they will just keep popping up! Oh well, I will keep being on team normal/logical/rational/positive with those of you who fit the bill and try to enjoy the little bit of sanity left on the web. Thanks to those of you who use the internet this way! =P

So, hoping the people that hate these with so much passion don't buy any so the people that actually want them, get them.

I will say if I am paying 4grand on a laptop, I am not going to complain about buying another cable that I want. I'll buy the thing and move on. You may be better off with a $3,970 laptop then get your $25 cable and have $5 left over.

From what I have heard, connectivity is good.

If you are OK with the things sticking out of your ears, this may be the most innovative product Apple has released since the iPad. I think there will be lots of followers, and we can expect battery life to become better and the sticks shorter. I'm glad they went for a propriety solution to make them connect easy. This is the biggest problem today with existing solution.

In a few years, cables will look really strange.

The pictures I've seen, they aren't "sticking out of your head", they are flush against your sideburn area.

Because people may already have their MacBook/MacBook Pro with them.
Why should they need to carry a separate power adaptor with them?

As shown with their new MacBook Pros Apple has decided that USB-C is the way to go (when they made a MBP with 4 ports and no USB-A ports), if they continue to ship produces with non-USB-C charging cables they are sending a little bit of a mixed signal.

A little mixed, but we are in a transition phase. The MacBook and MB Pro is a five to ten year device (in that it should last five to ten years, though almost certainly not with the original owner). The cable that comes with the AirPod does not have to last that long. And it can be replaced for ten to fifteen dollars. Or augmented with a dongle/attachment. MacBook owners buy in 2017 aren't going to want to be stuck with an inferior legacy and outdated port two, three or six years from now. But the vast majority of AirPod buyers will have a USB-A port to plug that cable into.

Was anyone able to successfully place a store pick up for these?

I keep wanting to know this too! It has been asked multiple times but no answer...I guess waiting in line pre-opening it is tomorrow...

That sounds a lot like make up excuses for Apple. They messed up, big time. Period. In the past, they did make a lot of connector transitions, but never so poorly executed as this one as their latest and greatest were always compatible (encouraging you to upgrade). Not now:

1) They should have included a lighting port on the MacBook Pro so you can use lightning headphones (if they want to create a world without analogue headphones as demonstrated by the iPhone 7 release).

2) Or include wireless headphones with the iPhone (if they believe wired headphones are dead).

3) And they should have switched to USB-C wall chargers so your iPhone 7 cable would fit into the new MacBook and leave USB-A behind. And with the removal of the MagSafe adaptor this would have been the perfect time to finally make MacBook and iOS chargers compatible.

But currently, we are not in a transition phase, we are in a mess of incompatible devices.

They did not do 1 because they were surprised by the backlash on removing the analogue port on the 7. Hence that weird survey asking people if they still use that port on the mac.

They did not do 2 to cash in more money knowing people would pay extra for them. And because their Q-tips were not ready when the 7 was relaxed.

They did not do 3 because... no idea.

Those aren't knockoffs -- they are some of the best headphones Apple has ever made. I still use mine as well.

No, I believe the ones he was refer to were knockoffs. The OP said they they were $10 headphones bought off eBay, but looked exactly like the Apple ones you are talking about.

I managed to get a pair from the Apple Store in Broadway in Sydney and have been testing them out for the last 15 mins.

Fit: Fits perfectly and there are no issues of them falling out. It just sat in my ear as I wandered around the house. They almost feel like they're not there cos they're so light.

Charging case: Standard Apple white plastic. Magnetic closure and snaps close very satisfyingly. The AirPods themselves also magnetically snap into their slots.

Sound: They do sound a bit clearer and better than the standard EarPods. I'm no audiophile but I'm very happy with the sound quality.

Connection: Took less than 5 seconds on the iPhone 7 plus. Opened the case and they automatically appeared on the phone screen. Opened my MacBook Pro and they showed up in less than 5 seconds under the bluetooth tab.

Transition between iPhone and MacBook:
Had music playing on the iPhone. Turned on the music on the MacBook and the music in the AirPods automatically stops. MB music plays through the speakers and doesn't automatically play in the AirPods though. You have to physically select AirPods in the bluetooth tab.
Opened the music app on the iPhone and the message "Looks like you're listening music on another device. To resume listening here, just press play". I did and the music from the iPhone came back into the AirPods.

Overall very happy with the purchase. I'm most satisfied with the simple connection and transition, and the fact that they fit perfectly with no risk of falling out.

Happy to take any questions :)

Nice review.

Just wanted to know which macbook you have and will the auto connect work with iphone 6S and 6 as well. Ir should work with 2012 iMac as well I guess.

I ask cos Apple has a history of supporting only part of the function in the older device.

And good bye to your privacy and security and advantages of the Apple ecosystem, but yes you saved yourself the two second one time cost of attaching and adapter. .

All that "free" healthcare we get doesn't come cheap you know.

I thought that's what the 13% HST (in Ontario) was for!

It's Monday morning in New Zealand and Australia, which means the first customers who placed orders for Apple's new AirPods have begun receiving them according to reports from MacRumors readers.

Deliveries are taking place across the two countries now, and Apple retail stores in Australia have also begun selling AirPods to customers.

In Australia, people who were hoping to get AirPods in store lined up early ahead of store openings, and as expected, supplies have been somewhat limited. At some stores, only a handful of AirPods were available, while others appear to have gotten more stock.

Customers who have received their AirPods are so far pleased with them. MacRumors reader Jason was impressed with how easy they were to sync and the sound quality. We'll have more first impressions a bit later as more customers receive their orders.

Based on early information coming from Australia, customers in Asia, the United Kingdom, and the United States will likely want to get to Apple retail locations before they open for the best shot at getting a set on launch day.

Apple has said retail stores will receive regular stock going forward, and third-party retailers like Best Buy are also going to be receiving AirPods stock starting tomorrow.

AirPods orders in other countries will begin arriving as Monday morning arrives. For customers who were not able to pre-order, purchasing AirPods in the store will be the only way to get them before January, as orders placed today will not ship out for six weeks in many countries.

[doublepost=1482123938][/doublepost]I ordered a set of AirPods online on the 14th Dec with delivery expected on the 17 th Jan 2017. By chance, I walked by an Apple Store this morning and asked if they had any in stock. Yes, that had a good supply so I bought a set and have cancelled the online order. I hope they live up to the hype about them!

Why is everyone so hyped about these? The Earpod design is one of the least comfortable earbud designs. I have $10 earbuds that are more comfortable than the Earpods.

Different strokes for different folks. My wife can't wear the apple earpods. I can't wear anything but the earpods. I actually think the sound is just fine... heck I even like the old design and keep a pair at my desk.

and will the auto connect work with iphone 6S and 6 as well

I can answer on behalf of the iPhone SE that the connection worked as advertised. Open up the AirPod case within 2in / 5cm of the phone and a panel will pop up from the bottom of the screen offering to connect.

But my range before audio starting cutting out was about 30ft with direct line of sight. I think iPhone 7 owners can get further.

You seem to be completly missing the point of why Apple chose to go USB-C on the new Pros and how it relates to their greater hardware catalog. They did it because yes it is where things are headed, but also because that ONE port supports so many different I/O types, while requiring less of a hardware footprint, allowing the computers themselves to be thinner/smaller/lighter. In reality, said laptops are a niche product compared to the hundreds of millions of lightning compatible devices that are out in the wild, most of which would not enjoy such benefits. There is no reason to upend your largest user base to potentially make small subset of "niche" users (and trolls on the internet) happy. You better believe that when Apple thinks it is time (and more importantly makes sense) to make said cable switch, it will happen. You might want to look into the saying "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

Just arrived in Phoenix. I'm thinking they'll get here tomorrow! Woot!
Mine were supposed to arrive on Wednesday, then they got moved up to Tuesday and now -on Sunday night- I see they've already arrived in Atlanta.

So unless Fedex intends to just sit on them for a further 36 hours in Atlanta and have them cluttering up their distribution center (in what must be the busiest time of the year for them) I just might see these things on Monday. :D
