No redesign? But but but, I want everybody to know I have the new iPhone...

You think most people care? It's not 2010. The 5 was similar to the 4s, so it would make sense if the 7 was similar to the 6s with the biggest design criticisms of that phone (protruding lens, antenna lines) eliminated. Maybe Apple will forget about doing an 's' update next year and release a more significantly redesigned iPhone 8 with mLED display and wireless charging in 2017. You never know.

How about color? I'm never going to buy the pink one. White and silver don't appeal to me. I like the black front but when are they going to make a black or charcoal back? I miss the black.

So if the iPhone 6s is 7.1mm thick and the camera protrudes, say, 0.5-1.0mm, and the iPhone 7 is rumored to be anywhere from 6.1-6.5mm and the camera will not protrude, that means that the camera went from around 7.5-8.0mm to around 6.0mm in size. I know they've reduced the camera size before with the iPhone 5 (which had the same camera as the 4s only with a sapphire crystal lens cover), but how would they manage it this time (since people say all the time that the laws of Physics do not allow Apple to do this)?

Anyway, to me, this is bad news because it most likely means that the iPhone 7 will have the exact same camera as the 6s (no larger aperture or pixels). It probably won't have OIS, unless they managed to include it somehow. I would have preferred a protruding camera with better specs, but then again, Apple is obsessed with thinness. We'll have to wait for the 7s for meaningful camera improvements again :rolleyes:

Meanwhile, the S7 is rumored to have an f/1.7 aperture (vs. the 6s's laughable-for-2016 f/2.2, an aperture size introduced since 2013).

It was nice to look at, but not very practical being all glass. At this stage it may be better off with the stronger glass that is being used in current generation phones.

Does the protruding camera really bother that many people?
I'm more bothered by the front-facing camera and proximity sensor. I can't buy me a white iPhone because of how ugly all these different holes look.

Make 'em go away.

Compared to all of the other iPhones, the 6 line was a little overly-simplistic. I would expect to see at least a 4->5 evolution. The pattern hasn't existed long enough to really call it a pattern, but iPhone generations seem to go in groups:

2G, 3G, 3GS: rounded, chrome edges, plastic back, glass front
2->3 Changes: make the whole back plastic rather than the top half aluminum (material change), remove indentation on the 3.5mm jack (I/O change)

4, 4S, 5, 5S: Chamfered, flat, aluminum and glass design
4->5 Changes: make the back aluminum (material change), thunderbolt (I/O change), and make it overall thinner

6, 6S, 7, 7S (so far): rounded again, aluminum back, rounded glass front.
6->7 Changes? (from MacRumors): unspecified waterproof material (material change), remove 3.5mm jack (I/O change)

It seems to me that there are 4-year design categories with 2-year sets of devices. I would still expect to see a new design, but in the ilk of a 4->5 change or a 2g->3g design change. Still rounded edges, but with some material change (like they seem to do).
This is very true. Anybody expecting a major redesign for the iPhone 7 will be disappointed. It won't be until the iPhone 8 that we'll see a departure from the current design (as well as major changes such as a possible removal of the home-button and OLED display-embedded Touch-ID).

Idc about the protruding camera...at all...

The antenna bands are horrendous on the gold and rose gold phones though, so that may be a good thing.

That mockup is just awful lol

Does the protruding camera really bother that many people? I mean I guess I'm not bothered by it because my phone is always in a case, but still

Same for antenna bands really

My phone is always in a case so I don't notice either. And even if it wasn't, I could not care less. As a photographer I do care about the camera's performance, which works great for me.

What else can Apple do design wise at this point to differentiate the phone from the 6/6s series with the tech that is available? Aside from changing the chassis materials and adding another color or two? They just improved the aluminum strength to 7000 series and I'd expect that to stick around for the 7/7s series phones. I believe the most they'll do is make it a tad thinner, improve display quality, camera quality, processing power, waterproofing,ect... Basically what we've been hearing from the analysts. Wrap around displays and such are at least a couple years away I would think, if that's what direction they go in. The major redesign was the 4, and the 6. iPhone 8 is where I'd think the next "major design" would take place chassis wise.

I have learned to understand that people like to complain about any and everything. No matter how minor it is. I mean how often are you looking at the back of your phone. The screen is on front.

And the hardcore Apple defenders would say, "Stop complaining! Apple doesn't owe you anything! You're all acting entitled! If you want a battery in your iPhone, stop being cheap and pay more for it! Don't like it? Go to Android!"

Or they maybe people other than 'hardcore Apple defenders' would just say don't be so ridiculous, because of course they're not going to remove the battery, and that battery life has increased from model to model, not decreased.

There is that.

Keep dreaming about the flush lens. The lens will probably protrude even more since apple is so obessed with thiness these days.

Wow that's ugly. I thought every other year is supposed to bring a new design. I'd hardly call that a new design. People want new designs and not something that looks similar to the phone they're trying to replace.

It will look different to my 5S that I'll probably replace this year. I never understand this thing about it not being different enough from year to year - surely most people doing upgrade every year.

That's why I have complaints about the front too. #210

iPhone 6 – ugly from all sides™

Agreed! I am happy with the battery life on the 6s+ but I would still take more battery over an even thinner design.

On a related topic, I would LOVE to know what % of iPhone users carry their phone in a case? All the fuss over antenna bands, protruding cameras, and shaving a 1/2 mm off the design really doesn't mean much if you are going to carry the phone in a case.

Which is thinner - a 3GS in a case or a 6S in a case?
