I guess i just don't agree with it not looking good. I have a stainless steel watch with a nice metal band and I think it looks very classy when I don't use a busy watch face.
Have you read Gruber's AW4 review? He explains my point quite nicely and probably better than I ever could.

Exactly this. Im buying my girlfriend one so she can leave her phone at home and stop checking facebook and insta every 10 minutes.

LMAO ... you’re kidding yourself to think a female already addicted to FB and IG will be weened off using another technology. Wait till she figures out notifications on s4 ... she’ll be licking her wrist like a happy kitten.

I feel your pain though but you’re fooling yourself if you really think that’ll help. Good luck to you though ;) honestly.

Just played with a 4 in the store. When going to the "all apps" screen it takes a while before it reacts to input. You have to wait a second or so before you can launch an app. That does not feel fast at all.

I’m torn because I do think the smaller will look better on my wrist, but think the bigger size will be more practical in every day use, easier to get a quick peek and to respond. I’m not sure yet, but since my 44 is due today i’ll Know soon enough. And of course it goes without saying that it’s always subjective as we all have different use cases, wrist sizes and eye sight.

I feel like I am less stressed about notifications now, after getting the Series 3 in spring. I can quickly glance at the watch and see if it's important, then ignore most of it. When I didn't have the watch, I would feel the taptic engine tap/hear the chime, take my phone out of the pocket, realize it wasn't important, then open Facebook, because you know, I already have the phone out of my pocket, so might as well... etc. etc. Much less usage of the phone now :)

Not to mention that Do Not Disturb and Notifications set on the Watch reflect and update these on the iPhone. No more haptic super vibrations on your front lap startling you. Just a gentle tap on your wrist that depending on your mind-set can be acknowledged or ignored. This alone was what I loved about Apple’s Watch! Much more of course.

Anyone with both iPhone and S4 have come up with useful Shortcuts?

Oh my Hermès S4 pic made it into the article!

They got rid of the square box and white plastic container from last year. But the packaging is still very classy and elegant.

The pic makes the watch look bigger than it is. It’s not that much bigger than the 42mm.

Here are a few more pics for those not following the Hermès thread.

Beautiful! Envy is not a feeling or thought I’ve experienced most in my life but for a few moments you’ve brought back this wonderful motivation into my life. Thanks.

Truth be told I actually liked the Hermes square presentation box. Made the customer feel like getting a signature gift not unlike a Tiffany’s box! Of course Apple unified the S4 Watch box to save further on costs and allow more devices to ship based on volume during shipping.

Very glad this “Edition” is no longer fully marketed it just doesn’t make sense for Long term ownership any longer based on the price. Hermes has pretty much been king in my mind.

I predict in 5 or 10 years more people will only have a watch rather than a phone. The watch needs a charger from the movement of the body, or the warmth, or the WiFi fields, etc.

Apple Watch definitely needs to license Kinetic motion charging tech. Warmth alone currently isn’t sufficient enough.

I agree with what you’re seeing slightly in 5-10yrs. Apple has bought an AR glasses company and their vision is Watch will replace iPhone when smartphones begin to stagnant in volume sales.

The AR glasses will work with iPhone but heavily will target Watch users upon first debut. When new battery tech comes to Watch boom calls will not be 8mins yet close to a full hour or two.

I would not be surprised if Apple is researching navigational UI based on gestures and retina scanning similar to Connected Code movie.

If you exercise, the watch with LTE is a game changer. Leave your phone behind and workout and run unencumbered.

I exercise a LOT but I’m not a runner. There is a LOT more exercises than “running”, why is this so commonly forgotten? More annoyingly is not having a Watch yet working out with weights with an app that has full read/write permissions in. Health yet no rings are moved at all!

Still quite big, but not gigantic has it seemed on the previous pic.
I think my wrist has a similar size so I'm still convinced the 40mm will look and feel better but I definitely have to try both in Apple Store. Too bad I can't go there today, I managed to convince myself not to pre order and now I really want to buy a series 4 :D

Did you already have a 42mm? If so, your old bands won't be compatible with the new 40mm.

Picked up a 44mm Series 4 to replace my 42mm Series 2. Significantly faster. And something not mentioned so far, so much easier to tap using big sausage fingers. Putting in the passcode now is much easier and less prone to error.

That's true for the 44mm, but the 40mm will be about the same as the old 42mm, so won't change that experience for them -- though it will certainly be better than it was on the 38mm.

That said, there's really no reason for this. The Watch really needs to move to FaceID soon (or some kind of smart pairing with a trusted device). Hopefully something they're considering in the next couple of years. As it stands, I'm not sure what other significant features they could add with this design, other than add some more sensors. They've more or less maxed out the active display area. So now they need to focus on improving the overall experience.

Likewise, give me a SS Apple Watch, over a Tag..any day, but that's me, guess I'm really a #fanboy #proudly

Smart pairing has been in there for ages. I can't remember the last time I punched in my watch's passcode instead of just unlocking my phone.

Maybe someone can wear it alongside their previous Apple Watch, or include some common item to really give context? The tech porn is great, but it doesn't really help make purchase decisions.

The series four is on the right (with the band)... the three on the left. sorry, moved the band so its not quite wearing them both but I think you can see the point.. .sitting on your wrist its not going to look that much bigger (44 vs 42 mm? can't even notice it side by side easily) ...but the screen size when viewing IS bigger because of the smaller bezels on the series 4.

Oddly, it DOES feel a bit different to me, lighter.. and closer to the skin. I imagine I will get used to that soon.

I'm getting sweaty palms from seeing how tight your band looks on your wrist! :) The watch looks great on your wrist, but isn't that uncomfortably tight?

Sure would be nice if Best Buy would actually sell me my pre ordered watch. I went to the store before noon and they said they couldn't sell them yet. I could see my order in the cage with my name on it. Last time I order anything from them.

I need to get to an apple store asap, that 44mm looks massive (not a fan)
You won't notice any difference at all. Just love the screen display! Really seems no different perhaps feels lighter than my Series 3.

The watch looks nice. But I’m still not moved to buy one...

Just don’t want tech on my wrist. My phone bothers me enough when it goes off throughout the day, the thought of adding yet another device to deliver notifications gives me a headache lol
My previous thoughts but my experience has been just the opposite. I do most everything from my wrist now. I no longer need to pull out the phone any more, much more convenient and quicker.

My god, they're so tacky, LOL.

Once the battery craps out the watch is a paperweight, cuz you KNOW Apple takes it's consumers for idiots where they think 'oh, I need another disposable because Apple didn't make the battery replaceable'

Do you just cut and paste this each year a new one comes out? Because this hardly seems like a fresh impression or that you are a new owner. By the way, the battery IS replaceable, just not by the owner. ($79 to Apple). Sure, tech that gets outdated over time is not for everyone, but is for most reading these pages.

Nope. I guess I do tend to wear Apple Watches tight, but nor am I terribly thin. But yes, sports bands tend to feel too tight and sweaty for me, so I prefer the Milanese loop.

All this is making me impatient, however I have to be calm as my watch "delivers 15 Oct - 22 Oct by Standard Shipping". I ordered on launch day but hesitated for a while as I couldn't decide between aluminium and stainless steel.

My current watch is a series 0 so I'm expecting a HUGE difference with the new one (and not just in the screen size). I'll be updating from space grey to stainless steel and from GPS to GPS + Cellular.

Let's be honest, with the higher spec I'm going for this time it's eye wateringly expensive, however if it lasts as long as my series 0 has then I think it's well worth it.

So, between 24 and 31 days to go. Not that I'm counting...

Anyone have pics of the 40mm vs 38mm? I got the 40mm because i have small wrists and im more curious how the 40mm will look than the 44mm

Oh. I've got a puny 160 mm wrist, and I've ordered the 44 mm... I haven't worn a watch for years, so I'm not even used to wear anything on my wrist. I'm a bit nervous now - hope it's not overwhelmingly huge, I'm not that eager to cancel my October 5 delivery of the Nike+.

Accidentally slept through pre-order for our Watches and had to order following morning. Was given a shipping window of Oct.12-19. This morning I received an email that our order shipped from China today and will be delivered the 27th. STOKED!!

Just walked into the Yas Mall store, (Abu Dhabi) mid-morning. Surprisingly they had what I wanted in stock, and including the slightly feeble queue outside, the whole thing took about an hour. (Online it was showing 4-5 weeks for delivery). I got the 44 mm silver seashell sports band version. I have small wrists, but it is fine. It is light, comfortable, and feels quite a lot thinner than my old one, partly due to its larger height and width. I am very impressed with it. It feels and looks significantly better than my Series 2, and I much prefer the strap to the plastic one. Well worth the upgrade in my opinion, not least for the cellular connectivity. The face can display so much more info, and everything I use it for 95 % of the time is accessible via the complications, so I will hardly ever need to access things from the app screen, which I have always found somewhat tedious to use.

UPDATE: The screen is a significant increase in size. It actually makes a huge difference. The speaker is also much better. If you are wondering if it is worth upgrading (from any model) I think this is a very significant improvement. I am not a blind Apple fan boy by any means, but I am very impressed indeed with this watch. If in doubt, go for it!

hi
this is a great review! thanks for posting it.
i too am preferring the silver aluminum (to cut down on weight on the wrist) wth seashell sports band (!) & i was thinking 44 would be too big for me.
and being able to access so much from the new complication is a game winner.
thanks again.

I have a similar size wrist And I ordered the 44 mm version as well. I haven’t worn a watch and I can’t remember the last time.

I have the same concerns regarding the size but I’ve been told even if the watch is a little large on a man that’s a bit more acceptable

Missus is wearing the 40mm, with me holding the older 38mm next to it.

Cool. Was just about to post to see if anyone had the 38 & now the 40. Does your wife have any feelings about the size difference?

It looks slight, but I know thing can be appear different in photos vs the actual user experience.

I pre-ordered the Series 4 only because of the Apple Giveback on the Series 3 was compelling enough to cover an upgrade. I typically Swappa the previous gen but going rates on the 3 were only about $15-20 more after fees/etc versus the trade in, so I was like, why not.

I came in very skeptical that there would be a dramatic difference. Man, was I wrong. Just asthetically, the rounded face coupled with the smaller crown just makes the screen pop. Something you can't really appreciate until it's on your wrist.

I was very concerned the 2mm difference going from the 38 to 40 would be noticeable. But it's not--at all. Band still has the exact same fit.

And the all ceramic backing—something else to appreciate. It just feels so much better (softer, smoother?) against my wrist. When hot/sweating I feel the watch against my skin, and typically have to take off and wipe down briefly to not chafe. I don't see this as an issue anymore...

And the speed that it boots up now, I was genuinely surprised. It was ready before I could finish unpairing my current watch lol.

I have a series 2 silver aluminum and a series 0 stainless steel. I'm going to trade in or sell both to get the series 4 SS. This is it. If you've been waiting, now is the time to take the plunge.

PS: the little sleeve the watch comes in is so cute! Lol
