FaceID on a laptop is a dumb idea for a couple of reasons. For it to work on your phone, you need to aim it at your head. If you miss, you move your hand a little. On a laptop, this will require you to monkey around with the angle of the display or your position in front of the camera. It's just not going to be nearly as seamless.

And for some things, you need to indicate positive acknowledgement rather than just having it passively allow something. That means pushing a key... which is really the same thing as touch ID.
Do you own a device that has FaceID???

The unlocking angles on my phone 12 are insane and quick.

On a computer you usually press the "ENTER" key for positive acknowledgment....

Apple's black anodized products are known for chipping off. Will this be Apples first to be problem free for many years?

We'll see.
Can’t say I’ve ever experienced that on any black anodized Apple product.

If Dell can have small bezels and camera in then I wonder why Apple couldn't do the same. The notch is not needed especially this big so wonder why they put it there

Dell has terrible cameras, the sensor is very small. Apple went for a larger sensor to get actual decent webcam quality.

The notch is there for a reason IMHO, testing the waters, to get used to it for the next model with FaceID?
Or, get rid of it altogether.

The notch is there because Apple wanted to make a statement about the rumor that the next iPhone will go with a punch hole camera.

I like the new Surface Laptop Studio too. If I’m crazy enough I’ll buy both..
I liked it until I saw how horrible the battery life actually is. My SO is going back to school and I was going to get her one to fill the tablet/laptop role.

That and they didn’t even hold out until Alder Lake released or go with Ryzen 5000, instead they stuck a crappy 11th Gen quad core in it.

Looking at the video I couldn't help but notice that the TouchID ring doesn't look backlit. I wonder if it's not, or it just didn't pick up in the video. I hope it is.
I'd like to think it's intelligent. That if you aren't in a state where TouchID is expected, it doesn't need to light. In the video, the system hasn't even been set up yet, so there would be no ability to use it. I'd think that if you're logged in (not locked) and not at a security prompt where it's expecting input, that it wouldn't light up.

At least, that's my hope.

Hey, that’s the screenshot I posted in the iPad Pro Blooming thread! ?

Seriously, on my XDR iPad Pro, the blooming is very noticeable at night, in dimly lit rooms or with the lights out, but it’s one of those trade offs you learn to live with, as the screen is superb in every other respect

Haha yea I just grabbed it off google images. Honestly though, yes it is bad, and yes even on the lowest brightness setting.

However I agree that’s it’s worth the trade-off and I’m still very happy with it overall.

However I feel like it will be a much larger problem for a pro device. I feel like the bloom will make it very difficult to accurately edit photos or film since you won’t have a good sense of what your footage actually looks like.

The blooming is also way, WAY worse with a cursor, as the cursor will always cause the zones around it to light up. When using touch input, it’s much less noticeable on the iPad than when using the trackpad.

I also feel like people will be less accepting of this screen on a 2000+ dollar pro work machine as opposed to an iPad Pro, which let’s be honest, will be a general purpose + a lot of media consumption device for most people.

When I buy the 14 inch hopefully they will have new cases for it on amazon I always end up getting a pink case(purple) which covers up the space grey anyway
Every time I remove one of those plastic cases, the computer is scratched to heck from debris rubbing in between the plastic and the computer chassis, and typically the computer is quite nasty, like a horders house.

*It's my job. People, please clean your own computers! Second note, public teachers seem to be the worst at cleanliness.

And yes, I will skip as again no touch screen, and the bloom will be horrendous.

Oh, AND IT HAS MORE PORTS.....such sheep. You still need a ****ing dongle for USB-A! And no micro SD card slot...so for me....it adds nothing especially w/o HDMI 2.1

I actually like that idea... it would start to glow when authentication is required. I hope that is the case!

Well, I have a 16 in. MacBook Pro now, and the size of the screen is nice. Now that I see that the 14 in. is not that much bigger than the 13 in., Im debating if I should spend the extra money and get the 16 in. Im trading mine in, so my monthly payment would only go from $70 for the base 14 in. model to $90 for the base 16 in. model.
I have the 16 and would like something much more portable, hence going for 14.
depends what your use case is - if mostly desk and no external monitor I would always go 16.

I have to be honest, the old Macbook on the right looks a lot nicer as an object. Hopefully the new one is more enjoyable to use. The height of the screen is kind of this weird no-man's-land which is reminiscent but not quite the 3:2 ratio of the Surface Book.

Looking forward to Tuesday when mine arrives!

They replace the Touch Bar, and also the laptop is noticeably deeper than the predecessor.
Yeah that’s what I meant, they replaced the Touch Bar but the touchbar was still not as tall as the function keys though. But yeah like you said the enclosure size has increased so they were able to accommodate the old trackpad ig.

This is something that’s kinda “bothering” me - space gray on one device not being the same as on another. My iPad mini in space gray is way darker than my MBA in space gray. I wonder why. It would be more pleasing to the eye if they were the same shade of gray

I was excited when space gray was offered for MBPs and got one in 2016. A weird set of events happened and I ended up with a silver 2016 about 4 months later. It’s been all silver since.

Finding matching aluminum gear in general is easier and I already had years of aluminum gear anyway.

I’m just staying with silver.

Now just imagine how nice it would look without the notch. I mean, yeah, it’s nice, but it could be so much more.

Agree with that for sure. I already ordered a new 16"one (from the 2019) but that simply because of power and not because of beauty. I actually it think it looks "old computer" rather than something fresh and contemporary (but I guess that fits with the whole narrative of bringing back old-ish ports).
No doubt, if I could even run x64 Windows in a VM I'd be jumping all over these new laptops. For now my 16" Intel is still awesome.
