Leaving aside the possible future space for other sensors and the branding element, the other thing that I immediately think of is that the most vulnerable part of the screen would definitely be right where the notch is since people are going to be grabbing around there to open the lid each and every time.
Heh, this is probably going to result in a lot of smudged up video on Zoom calls.

Not much different than the phones, probably (I kept on noticing these weird halos or light blooms on a friend's phone and realized they were grabbing the lenses with their fingers practically every time they pulled it out. Kind of shocked the photos were as decent as they were with fingerprints constantly smudging them.)

The XPS has a webcam too. So no, not only was the bottom chin not necessary, but neither was the notch.
The XPS has a terrible webcam (I have one). The laptop is great but the only way to get bezels that small is to remove the webcam (not a good idea with so many working remotely) or use a lower resolution camera with a tiny sensor (see previous point).

Hey, that’s the screenshot I posted in the iPad Pro Blooming thread! ?

Seriously, on my XDR iPad Pro, the blooming is very noticeable at night, in dimly lit rooms or with the lights out, but it’s one of those trade offs you learn to live with, as the screen is superb in every other respect

damn,

Will wait for the reviews to come out.

I use my laptop in darker environments a lot of the time and I already struggle with FullHD LCD panels. I don't know if my eyes will love me for that blooming/haze effect.

The notch isn’t an “iconic” design. I don’t understand why people say this. Every single MacBook and Mac in history never had a notch and were already iconic with just the Apple logo on the back.
But the Apple logo is gone now, so we need something that replaces it as "iconic" design. The notch is the new Apple Logo and the company will soon replace the Apple logo everywhere with a notch. :)

Here are my complaints...

Why the notch? I don't mind a slighter larger border on top.

Where is my Touch Bar? Why did you take that away? I use this tool everyday on my 2016 MBP. Couldn't you just design it as an option, like the older MBP 13 in (intel)?

That's it...otherwise, it seems awesome.

The one thing that stops me from buying now (other than the items above), would be that I like to run other OS's on VM and some of them are Intel only (X86, x86/64). So, I would need a backup Intel machine to continue without interruption.

Obviously, I will eventually move to Apple Silicon for my MBP, but I hope they iterate to bring back the touch bar.

I bet these won’t be updated again for another 2 years (MX chips in even years (2020, 2022, 2024, etc.), MX Pro/Max chips in odd years (2021, 2023, 2025, etc.), so if you’re going to wait for FaceID, I hope you’re willing to wait 2 years.
Nope, it's a drop-in, the notch size is much bigger than it should be, next year there will be FaceID, *if not earlier with a software update, easter egg right now built into the new Macbooks.

*We wish

Is the 14” closer to the old 13” or the 15”?
I currently have a 15” 2013 mbp Which is the perfect size for me and Im not sure if I should go for the new 14 or 16”?

Hey look, the notch is showing up on new trucks too! The entire world is going notchy.

It's pretty obvious we're going to see FaceID in a year or so and THAT is why there's a notch

Is the lack of Face ID in these models a hardware limitation or might Face ID come to these in a future update? Thanks.

It's 0.7" larger than the 13.3" and 1.4" smaller than the 15.4" if you go by the 16:10 screen area (excluding the areas around the notch). So it will be noticeably bigger than the 13, but dramatically smaller than the 15 still.
