I find it amusing that you would complain about how overly complex android is... in a thread about an overly complex tethering app that requires an instructional video to get things working.

What's even more amusing is the tethering built into android is like a 1 click deal and ur done.

The process is the same for both OSs on AT&T (PITA if you want it to be free) and the same on other carriers (no charge = "like a 1 click deal and ur done").

This setup took me 3 minutes.

So was this just like a proof-of-concept thing? Because having your screen at maximum brightness probably drains a lot of battery while browsing the net...
If you're tethering your phone, it's likely hooked up to your computer... and being charged off the USB port.

Really, if Apple is responsible for what is posted, approved and sold through their coveted app store. How could they go after this kid or his mother? What type of testing do they conduct as a part of their approval process? I would think that they would open the code and take a look at how its built. There are hundreds of apps that get denied for reAsons I'm sure are similar or violate AT&T and\or Apples policies and they don't get sued for trying to put it through. I will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Apple don't see the source code when they approve / reject an app so it's frighteningly easy to embed easter eggs such as this in apps and get them approved. This time it was a useful app, but developers could just as easily embed malicious code that was hidden and Apple wouldn't pick it up in their testing

You kind of missed the point really. Out-of-the-box Android is full of complexity/confusion (comes from being made by geeks with engineer-types for oversight).

The iPhone's native tethering is quite simple.

A third-party solution is kind of irrelevant when talking about the complexity of iOS.

 That kid developed a tethering app for the iPhone. The average college student drinks too much and f*cks around in college. I'll leave it to you to decide who is the more intelligent person (and thus has better chances of getting into a good college)....

Fair play to him I say, but to truth be told he more than likely glued together the tethering and some other clever stuff from third-party code.

So he probably didn't have to do all that much coding himself, but it's a great start none the less.

If only ATT could step up and realize that we live in 2010 and that USA should not be left in the mobile dark ages. Tethering in Europe works wonderful with the iPhone and it's only because ATT wants to get as much money from each subscriber as possible that they don't allow tethering in their networks.

It's.. embarrassing.

I hope he enjoys his 15 minutes of fame before he realizes that he now wont be able to get into any good colleges. Not that it matters since his college fund will all go to Apple and legal fees.

Yeah Apple doesn't really have that kind of power...

Checked the app this morning, happily still working post-pulling. Hopefully the kill switch won't be enabled.

Does anyone think this kid used his real name?

Does anyone know if a purchased app from one account can be used (via file transfer) on another phone from another account?

I got it, tested it and went to bed (8PM EDT). I backed up the app after a sync and now will keep it in my back pocket until I need it.

Has anyone gotten anywhere with getting IE to work with this yet?? Only reason I ask is there are a few DoD sites that won't work with anything but IE.

DoD? One figures you would be issued an aircard and a SecurID If mobility were of importance :)

... hopefully when he gets his application pulled.

I think Apple should change their terms there - if an application is accepted and later needs to be pulled because of gross violations of the store terms (like lying about what the application does, or using it to cheat customers as was reported a week or two ago), then Apple should be able to pull the application, refund all purchases from the developer's account, and keep their 30%.

Gross Violations? Cheating customers? I agree. But wrt this particular Application, Clearly, this is a minor oversight of a relatively useless Easter egg that wasn't meant for the public version.

Relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaax :apple:

WHY ARE PEOPLE RATING THIS POSITIVE?

this is such a shame. Apple and At&t work hard to provide us with service and you should all be thankful that tethering is offered AT ALL by ATT.

ATT has the best 3g experience and you are all going to clog up its networks by utilizing the 3g for laptops. Not to mention that they are by far the best cell phone company out there and i've had the best customer experience with them. Its sad to see people taking advantage of such a great network for cheap thrills. you people should be ashamed after all ATT has done for you.

We finally found him. Behold the first AT&T fanboy! :D

Amen. I've grown tired of AT&T and their anti-customer service. It's ridiculous.

Any chance this app may make it's way to, um, other app stores not sponsored ny Apple? Lol

Help, I can't get it to work!

So I have a MacBook Air and an iPhone 4. I have followed the instructions to a t and even tried a couple things suggested on this thread, but no luck. Any ideas?
