It won't work with the iPad because the iPad doesn't let you use a SOCKS proxy.

The internet works with this, but I can't get Adium to connect. Hm, I guess I'll play around with settings a bit more. Any luck from anyone else?

You have to tell Adium to use the global proxy settings (if that's an option) or give it the proxy info.

iChat uses the global proxy setting.

I missed Netshare the first time. Figured I'd wait a day before buying it. I've regretted it for 2 years...

I was not going to miss this one...
:)
Same here. Thanks to MR's tweet, I caught it this time!

I don't need to tether enough to make it worth paying the extra, but it will come in handy every once in a while. I have been kicking myself over NetShare all this time.

So we have a guy who broke the rules and hid something from Apple.

And you're all rushing into it on the assumption that he didn't ALSO hide something from you too?

The rules are silly and I commend Lee for his boldness (I'd originally typed "ingenuity" but there's nothing very clever about what he did - it just takes sorely lacking balls to go through with it and announce it).

Any one of the third party apps on your 'phone right now could be collecting credit card and other sensitive data and sending it anywhere because Apple don't really do any significant binary analysis, as Nick has confirmed with this exercise.

So, the question ought to be: why are you trusting anyone except Lee, who has been honest even though it will guarantee that his app is pulled?

Need to jailbreak iphone anymore... ZERO

It does take quite a while to get going. Actually impressed on the setup process since the computer still thinks the wireless has no ip address. Now if only he could background the app :)

(btw, posted from tethered iphone)

Its quite worrying that someone could put anything into an App. Even something as simple as stealing contact numbers, or taking photos - its very possible and Apple obviously wouldn't know!

Chances are there are some apps out there doing it already.

Just like there are on your Mac, Windows, Linux, UNIX whatever computer already. Just because it is in the app store it does not mean that you should trust everything in it.

If it looks like a dodgy app, don't install it.

it works, be sure to change the proxy settings back so your regular internet will work. what i did is made a home location in network settings (no proxy settings) and a tether location in network settings (set up for the app, for when im on the go)

Haven't really tested the tethering part, but so far its a great all around flashlight app :D

But seriously, im shocked that it has taken this long for someone to sneak something like this into the app store. Perhaps it has already been done, and they are really good secrets?

Using it right now, and it seems to work very nicely. I have been able to get some decent throughput (2.22Mbps), and also noticed the cell i am on must be one of those restricting iPhone upload speeds.

The app also keeps the iPhone from sleeping so this is good.

I am a bit disappointed in the developer, if you are going to slip something prohibited in the app store, why not have the app run unauthorized in the background once the secret code is put in? Or perhaps this might be a little harder to sneak in.

In either case, I am really enjoying this soon-to-be-free app.

Does the data used via this get added to your data count, or your tethering counter?

I believe the iPhone 4 and iOS 4 now has a seperate counter for each, and I want to ensure there is 100% no way the network knows, providing you don't use it excessively.

Unless you do something to flag your account, you really think ATT is going to examine each and every account of theirs in detail like that?

I used to tether all the time on 3GS and sometimes would use quite a bit of data. It never had a tether counter though.

I watched it and read the thread . . . excuse the dumb question.

Is this tethering on 3G networks? It appears to be going wi-fi -> iPhone -> Mac. Or did I miss something in the video?

Heh...I hope that works out for you all! You may want to avoid using any passwords or credit cards while tethering with this app. Just a thought.

I mean, obviously you can't trust that Apple's approval process is gonna protect you in this case.

Yes. Please be aware all MacRumors users:

Before you use this app, please delete you Note entitled "Credit Cards and SSN," otherwise you may be experiencing some difficulties. If this guy goes against Apple's policies, he must be evil!

In all seriousness, love the 13.37.13.37.

Leetsauce.

Having an app phone home, or steal user's data, is a lot different than changing a few settings on your phone and leaving it alone.

Plus (I'm agreeing with you here), Mr. Lee developed Netshare. I'm inclined to trust him and commend him for enabling this again.

That would effectively make this malware, and would be a good use case for the app kill switch. Right now, it simply violates the developer agreement.

Could you define what makes an app look 'dodgy'?

Also, to an earlier commenter, I wasn't ruling out Apple's AppStore against Androids, Blackberrys or anyone else's. Obviously it's something that is down to the review process, and Apple's has proven to be flawed. Unless you are a developer and have experience talking to the reviewers, you cant comment.

Whilst on one site some are very good, others are poor. I had one app reviewer email me to tell me that I was using Disney's (copyrighted) font. When in fact I was using Apple's brush script! (A free font) If you've seen these two fonts you would be shocked that s/he jumped to that conclusion.

Whilst I'm confident that MOST of the reviewers are pretty savvy, some simply seem to follow a checklist and hit the approve button.

The App Icon...

Did anyone else notice the icon for the app? It looks like a shielded twisted pair cable… :)

Seriously? You guys with iPhones are bothering to tether to a connection that slow?

Another reason not to buy an iPhone, My HTC HD2 on a 7.2 Mb/s HSDPA connection beats the crap out of that. Happy waiting!!
