I guess what I'm saying is for me, I went over board, and anything overdone can be unhealthy. Wine is considered to have significant heath benefits - if you drink 1 or 2 glasses. Spend hours drinking its much much worse. Moderation is key to so many things in life
I used to spend a lot of time gaming. Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3, and Pro Evolution Soccer used to be my drugs.
That's the reason I got interested in gamedev. But I didn't quit cold turkey. I simply quit. Not on purpose, not planned or anything. For some reason I got bored while gaming. Work/Wife/Kids probably contributed to that.
But for a few years, I used to compel myself to play some games. Why? Because I needed to see what other gamedevs were doing. But my game choice was wrong. Everything was AA or AAA+ games. Besides Witcher series, I hated each of the games I've bought. I would spend 30-60 min / per game, and never play it again.
But somehow got into trying indie games. Those mostly don't take much of my time, and are quite enjoyable. I guess my gaming is about 1-2-3 hours per week. So basically, almost nothing. I spend most of my time working, with family, or sports (soccer, tennis and gym).
But some people spend most of their time on games, or pubs, or whatever. I've decided that my time is better spent on learning new things, or trying to stay fit and healthy. But once a week, I like to visit a pub and enjoy a few glasses of wine or beer with my friends.
Like you said, moderation is the key.
