bootable USB stick created, but when i'm trying to install Windows from there using F12 during boot up, it won't show my hard disk: the installation location Window in the setup process stays empty and diskpart is only showing the usb stick?
That usually means the installation media doesn't have a driver for your disk controller. I haven't seen anything like that in a very long time. Do you have anything exotic??

It's possible that if you have a RAID disk controller, you may need to go into the BIOS for it and set up the RAID volume.

msinfo shows Intel RST VMD Controller under SCSI (nothing under IDE)
drivers appear to be spaceport.sys and iastorvd.sys

haven't checked the BIOS much yet as i've been too confused be the UEFI thingies already 😂
though i think under Windows the SSD has been to encrypted per default, if that might have anything to do with it

thanks,
just checked the BIOS settings, and Secure Boot (Deployed Mode) and UEFI CA are enabled, might check that first, but drivers are also a very good idea 👍
though at least in that look they are still talking about Win 10 drivers. there might of course not be too many differences, but i'll see if there are dedicated Win 11 drivers available

Game changer! Windows 11 all the way! https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/docs/unison/overview.html This, as kludgy as it is, being a 1.0 and all that, still nevertheless puts Windows OS way ahead of the dated, graphically crippled MacOS. Happy day! I left MAcOS simply because I could not stand those teeny tiny 3 colored stop light thingies in the upper left of windows. They have not changed (get made bigger) in over 25 years. Insanely ridiculous. All in on Win 11.

Just recently I had the same issue with Thinkpad Z16 :(

tried it with these drivers and also secure boot options in the BiOS disabled (or enabled). still no luck :(

i just hope Fedora will not be as picky, but i have read sad things about Linux and RST
Bummer. There's got to be something you can do. :( I only have one PC here with an RST controller and I upgraded it to Windows 10 from Windows 7. I did upgrade it to a SSD at the same tome though. If I remember right, I had to set the BIOS to RAID mode for the disk for it to use the RST controller, even if I didn't actually boot off a raid volume.

I've had lots of problems with Linux and anything not mainstream, so i don't even try anymore and only use Linux in a VM.

(how) did you solve this?

I think I read something about the Z16 and problems somewhere before. How did you get around it?

Found the drivers for the specific disc, copy/paste them to install USB, browse for drivers and that's it.
It's funny one has to deal with such things in this modern age, but it's easily solvable. Another solution is to use command prompt and 'diskpart'. Simply list drives there, clean them then format. For some reason windows installation recognises almost all of them after that part, without any drivers.

I believe this is the first disk in my lifetime that 'diskpart' didn't work for me. But drivers did.

thanks,
will try to find those drivers.
i had all drivers backed up already, but msinfo might give some hints where to look too.

was actually thinking that maybe it's the drivers for the SSD, but i've never heard that you'd need specific drivers for a hard disk before. it was only the controllers that required them and googling also only pointed to the controller. so i didn't give that thought a high-ish priority
if that won't work too though i'll give up and just remove the McAfee stuff manually (or use their de-installation tool, but who knows what else a dedicated removal tool from them will do to a system in exchange) 😂

will now have to concentrate on how getting to run Linux first though. 🤓

lol, i just installed Fedora!
i think this was the most painless and straight forward installation process i've ever had (and this includes Apple products)

AND IT RECOGNIZED THAT #%@&##@ SSD WITHOUT A HITCH FFS! 😂

plus, i've only been using it for a couple of minutes now, but within this first time on a Linux system ever i'm inclined to think even the OS experience itself is better than Windows! (which is good too, but a bit "bland")

Update.

Sold the 3080 - in my case it wasn't being kept cool enough during day to day use which meant the fans kicked occasionally and those had a pitch I didn't like. Going to wait until June to grab a GPU when Diablo 4 comes out. That way hopefully the prices come down a bit and I can pick the right spec for my usage.

I bagged a Pixel Watch BNIB for £125 so going to rock that. I like my wife's so I can see it being a staple device.

I've also decided to stick with my Pixel 5 until the Pixel 8 is out. The photos I get with the 5 are still excellent and the size is so comfortable.

I'm not a betting man, but I'm willing to put money down that you relying on an iGPU will be short lived ;)

I can't lie I keep looking at GPUs, the 7900 XTX mainly as it's a solid 4K performer. I just don't want to spend £1.1K. I can get a 7900 XT for £850.

Why not get something that is lower spec'd like a 7600 XT where it can give you a bigger lift then the iGPU but its only meant to be a bridge item, until a better priced, better spec'd GPU is feasible to buy

received my new Win 11 Pro machine today,
offline installation went relatively smooth after consulting google DDG 🤓

retrieved my license key via wmic

drivers updated and extracted via dism

what am i doing wrong?
i'm using a Dell Vostro with some UEFI stuff in the BIOS that i've never heard of before... back in my days it was just "c:, d:, etc." in the boot sequence in the BIOS 👶
I've seen laptops where the USB 3 wouldn't let you boot. Try a USB 2 port.

And Fedora has one of the WORST installers out there. Especially when you want to partition everything manually (home, root, boot, swap...). I also really like the linux experience on the desktop. Fast, snappy, customisable and really lightweight when compared to Windows.

I'm in the same situation and would appreciate help and experience of you guys.

I'm 39 years old, using windows for roundabout 25 years. Last couple of years mostly thinkpads (t14, t15 and smth like that) 4 month ago I decided that the time has come to try something new and ordered a macbook air m2 16/512.

First days with macOS we're pretty amazing, maybe because of rose-colored glasses that made me not seeing the flaws of macOS. But there is one serious issues that makes it barely unuseable.

1. Nearly 99% of use time I'm standing / sitting at my desk using external display(s), not really using the built in screen. Maybe 30 minutes per week I'm using my laptop as a mobile.
Never had issues with any of my external displays using windows. I was really disappointed about the compatibility with macOS: flickering and blurry dock texts at 1080p displays, weird scaling at 4k displays.
Only display which works well is my main external display which I use at work (dell 2k usb-c)
I understand that this is caused by the m1 / m2 chips that seem to have issues with some external displays, but I cannot accept to be forced to buy more expensive displays to make it work with the MacBook.

So I gave the MacBook Air to a workmate and got back to my lenovo thinkpad t15. I'm getting my work done faster than on macOS but on the other side I'm a very into aesthetics and find windows very ugly comparing to macOS.

I'm also a lifetime iPhone user, tried 3-4 android devices over the last 15 years but couldn't stand the OSdesign so I switched back to iPhone after some days or weeks.

So in my case the issue is as follows:

1: rationally: There is no need to get another MacBook. I hardly won't find any use case where it will provide advantages over using windows. Also Mac is more expensive (what isn't really an issue as my employer pays for the equipment)

2. emotionally / visual: I just don't like the look of windows. Also windows is stressing me more than macos. (Think this is caused by some bad projects with my last employer which ended in a burnout / fatigue syndrome.
So my brain associates windows with stress. Don't know if this is a real issue or a strawman argument.

I find Windows MUCH prettier and more modern than MacOS. So we are opposites :) I tried MacOS for over a year and did not hate it (except for the 3 colored dots, I HATE those) But compared to a nice Win 11 machine (with Start 11, of course!) I just like Windows better.
