Just added another 500Mhz Pc. Not sure how much good that will be. Am using the console version. I guess every little bit helps.

I have an oportunity to take home about 5-10 older PC's that are being chucked out from where I work. They are a mixture of speeds ranging from 266Mhz to abou 500Mhz. Was thinking about grabbing some, not sure if its worth it though. Dont really have space to put many new computers at my place.

How big are they? Are any of them desktops that lay down? I am looking for an old pc of any type really it just can't be too big. I need it so that I can run my GPS map loading software. Also do they have OS install discs that comes with them. I'll happily pay shipping for more then one of them if they meet the right criteria.

I think they need to drop the time-limit for data units... I had crunched 95 of 100 steps in a Gromacs unit when the BLASTed thing (sorry about the pun) timed-out and the results were simply tossed for a new downloaded unit.

Aren't they accepting half done units (meaning partially done) ?

I thought I heard that from someone.

Then you would get like 95% of the credit or something...

Once someone gets a G5 set up with folding, let us know how much the speed is improved - I know it's all relative, but you can still speculate.

I know if i had a G5 folding would be the first thing i would load!

only problem being, i dont have a G5 cos i dont have any money!

It wouldn't matter a whole lot since folding@home doesn't seem to work on G5s right now.

So does anything actually run on the G5s? I keep reading about this program and that program and yet another program doesn't work on the G5...that cannot be good!

Well I think 10.2.7 is simply a patch to get the G5 to run something. Not everything, but something. 10.3 should be out within a month or less and I expect it to fix most everything so it works with the G5. Though as with 10.1->10.2 10.3 will probably break more programs then the G5 would by itself.

Anything that is AltiVec-enhanced has to be checked for certain functionality which was not implemented.

Judging from the number of those applications, it should be a fairly quick check.

With the Gromacs code, it may not be anything more than a re-compile but if they used certain things explicitly, there will be work involved. It could also be that the checked the internal processor number and did not recognise it.

Stanford's developer has stated that, with enough of a presence, they will make certain that folding@home runs on the G5 series. They're right--why pay a developer for quantities of 10?

Plenty of things run on the PPC970, including Photoshop 7, which is AltiVec-enhanced. It might just be a while before folding@home does.

Good to see we've managed a couple days in a row in the Yellow according to Extreme Overclocking.....and is this our first time at over 11k points?

I wonder if we can keep this up :D

I think we passed 12k about a month ago, or it was a high 11k.

congragulations on the output bertman! :)

u definitely have the single day record for most output for a user (not including post-outage spikes)

don't get too excited about folding on a 1GHz Powerbook. I have on folding for about 16 hours a day, and the Athlon XP I am also running beats it hands down. Should the Macrumors home page not have a banner for folding, inviting all visitors to fold for the team if they use and like the site?

This has been discussed over and over and over again but really it's up to Arn. He's thrown us a bone on occasion and made our Folding team a front page article but by and large we have a MacRumors folding team but we aren't officially sponsored.

someone make a banner, I'll throw it into the default rotation

On this general topic, I've noticed that we've been slipped lately and just lost ground to the Knights a while back. Looks like we are in need of more people or others are just not folding as much as they used to. Not sure if this is just because the client doesn't work on the G5 or what, though.

We should start a new thread on this to get ideas on what we want to do.

I'll get it going.

The Knights have been gaining on us for very very long time. The truth is our output is nearly double what it was 8 months ago.
