Unfortunately France turned almost into a totalitarian state after the last terrorist attack. Civil rights from each of it's inhabitants are been washed away all in name of the so called "security". It's a very sad development to see unfold in more and more EU countries, especially in the USA.

The US did the same with the Patriot Act after 9/11. It's always sad to see a democracy turn on its people even if it's done with the best intentions.

I think this is another example of how Apple needs to concentrate on making their phones' encryption completely inaccessible by anyone but the phone's owner. Because these crazy, blinkered laws obsessed with breaking into suspects' devices regardless of the consequences for everyone else clearly aren't going anywhere.

It shouldn't be the manufacturer of the phone that is legally compelled to do anything with regards to the data the user puts on it. It should be the user, and only when there is a reasonable justification. That way it is only individuals under suspicion for an actual reason who are compelled to reveal anything, rather than everyone's data being at risk from bad or corrupt government actors, crackers, terrorists, violent and abusive partners etc.

Oh yes, Apple will soon realise it is an entirely different ball game taking on the EU and they will fail miserably, this may be a French law but it will have EU backing I suspect. And the European court ripped Microsoft to shreds, if anyone was thinking Apples money can buy them out of it.

Americans would find generally its an entirely different attitude to this matter in Europe. As I understand it I thought their were already laws in some European countriea that enforce this anyway, I know for instance the UK government is renewing its laws on data.

Hmm reading the I'm guessing American opinion on here, I think you need to remember the rest of the world has a different culture to you, France is pretty battered after having three attacks I think, with a fair few innocent people blown up or shot. And it is estimated their are around 5000 ISIS members at large in Europe right now according to the head of Europol. So I think it's a very fair stance France is taking at present.

Stopping mass immigration into Europe would be a better idea

In most EU countries judges are appointed by the government.

The UK has, since 2006, had an independent commission appoint judges and the government have nothing to do with it.

In France they are appointed independently of the government as their legal framework protect the judicial system from the executive branch of government.

Meanwhile in the US, federal judges are still appointed by the President (aka, the government) by the Constitution.

I didn't read the law, but say Apple pulls sales out of France and way after the fact an iPhone bought elsewhere is in the mix, is Apple still held accountable?

Not when terrorists are home grown. Immigration has its part to play yes, but the UK is not part of Europe's free movement and still gets attacked.

Isn't UK part of NATO forces that make military operations on these countries ? Wan't Cameron that said "there's indeed weapons of mass destruction", in order to justify UK participation and make UK once more to play the role of USA's puppet ?

EU countries want to stop being terrorism targets and cease mass immigration ? Well, how about stop bombing their homes for a start ?

Reactions: Wondercow
"The rule aims to force phone makers to give investigators data and it will be up to the manufacturer to use whatever technique is necessary," Republican lawmaker Philippe Goujon, who proposed the amendment, told Bloomberg. "The target is to have them cooperate. The aim is not to break the encryption - the principle is that manufacturers should cooperate."

Earth to France: the principle is that state sponsored hackers would eat your corporations’ proprietary information for lunch, every day. Not to mention the recipe for the US House of Representatives’ dining hall Freedom Fries.

French Emergency Powers now Permanent

This is absolutely insane.

Wow. And the French people just accepts this?
