wha.... how?

netflix is based on silverlight - right? i remember some joker at ctia mentioning how windows phone 7 will corner the market because netflix is silverlight.

how about the iTunes movie store? how in the world is this true?

Though that would be a cruel (and therefore awesome) April Fools joke, the screenshots/icons from Apple's servers make it seem legit.

Does anybody know if Netflix is planning subtitle support anytime? I hate the fact all the streaming sites do not have subtitles/CC support (well except for Hulu and ABC, but they don't have it for everything).

Does HTML5 even support CC/subtitle overlay? I know Flash does, but everytime i switch over to html5, it doesn't work.

Sighs, I wish the congress can mandate CC/subtitle for online videos, would make life easy for me.

Agreed.

For me, this could be one of the biggest stories of the week. This is HUGE.

Sketchbook Pro, Netflix, and then if we could get Hulu that would make the hat trick, triple crown--whatever you want to call it. It would make my year. I'm beyond excited now to get my iPad! Haha with all this positive news in the last day, where are all the iPad haters now?

I was an iPad believer on day one and I thought the idea of an Apple tablet didn't appeal to me before that. Then after I saw the potential during the keynote, it sucked me in!

iPad will be seen as a shift in computing to a super easy to use, full integrated solution that provides tons of content while also being the most fun to use. No more fixing my little sisters Toshiba, no more calls from my Grandpa about installing drivers. My life is going to get easier from here on out, even if I didn't buy one.

I can't wait to curl up in bed with my wife and watch some movies on Netflix before bed. Right now its either my burning hot on the lap MBP or the xBox 360 in my office, where we can't really comfortably watch it.

Plus, for the first time, its easy to bring Netflix with me anywhere I go.

OK, that does it. Give me a basic $499 iPad, low-end DSL and Netflix plans, and a glucose drip. I will never need to get out of bed. I can lie in my own filth for the rest of my life and accomplish nothing ever again! :) Just give me a jar to spit my teeth into as vitamin deficiency takes hold.

P.S. Nice icon from MR: :apple:

It gives the nay-sayers one less thing to whine and hate about.

That really, *really* sucks, you know. Really.

For them that is.

I'm surprised no one has made mentioned of the ABC app! Getting to watch lost, V, flashforward, ugly Betty, the middle, modern family, and cougartown as much as I want for free? Wow i'm suprised this was approved by apple. I see it affecting their store sales soon!

Remember, Apple's main objective is to sell hardware. I suspect they will have a very liberal policy, initially, allowing others to provide/stream content to the iPad.

This will create chaos for a while-- with everyone scrambling to figure out how to deliver and monitize their content, advertising, etc. for this new device.

I envision each member of the family having an iPad... each doing their own thing (e.g. watching the same or different movies/TV shows reading books, listenening to music, playing games at the same time).

No more fighting over who gets to play on the Wii or what TV show to watch... Think of it we'll (individually) be able to watch Glen Beck and Sponge Bob at the same time :)

When the dust settles, the way we consume content will have changed, forever... and Apple will be in the center of it all!

Do you know anything about how it works? It doesn't matter what platform it is, the videos itself are based on codecs like h.264. Platforms like Flash/Silverlight are used as a container to playback those files. Web browsers by itself doesn't know how to playback video codecs, that's why often it's required to install a plugin who knows what h.264 codec is. HTML5 changes that by using a video tag which tells the browser that it's a video and this allow the browser to use its own decoder (h.264 in this case) instead of a plugin.

Netflix can play on any devices that can stream h.264 videos, that's why its on PS3/Wii/Xbox 360 and PC/Mac and soon to be iPad.

did anyone try Starz Play instead of unlimited plan?

"While access to instantly watch choices from the Starz Play service is included with all Unlimited plans, we do have a plan that limits what is available to watch to Starz Play service choices only. While this plan does not have any DVDs, it does offer unlimited streaming of these choices for $7.99 a month. This plan does not have a free trial."

It's a fairly pointless plan at that price. For an additional $1 a month, you not only get 1 DVD out at a time, but you also receive access to literally everything they have streaming. Seems pretty silly to limit yourself to just the Starz Play content.

While I'm skipping on the first gen iPad, this is definitely a great app that would get a ton of use from me. Between my computer, Xbox, and mail, I probably use Netflix on a daily basis. Stoked.

It may not depend on HTML. If it uses an app running on the iPad (rather rhan Safari) it likely uses the movie player API (in the SDK). This API allows overlays on the video being played.

April Fools Day!

That would be pretty rotten considering that the article recommends people to get their Netflix subscription going...

Which, now that I type that out, I am thinking BS.

PS3 and Wii need a special disk to activate, but iPad can just install an app...

Something does smell awfully funny... FUNNY ENOUGH FOR A NEGATIVE CLICK. :D

I'm pretty sure the disc is just a loophole Netflix exploits in their exclusivity deal with Microsoft that allows them to bring the service to other consoles. Hence the Xbox 360 being the only console without a disc. (Instead, the Xbox just downloads an "app")

Unless the iPad is a gaming console, those examples don't really mean anything.
