Yeah, honestly, if they don't release them soon, I'll turn Emo. That is what Steve Jobs is doing to the youth of America

Hahahaha I love emo/screamo music.... but the little teenyboppers that call themselves emo are SO annoying.

Consideration

Perhaps the possibilities of this have been discussed already on this forum or the one before, but how exactly would a magnetic latch be implemented on an aluminum computer? If you were to, say put a small magnet below above the screen, you would magnetize the entire aluminum plate surrounding the LCD. Perhaps harmless, but still seems like an unlikely choice. I can imagine myself reaching over the screen with a metal wrist watch and having stuck, as I think to myself "I knew I shouldn't have waited, damnit."

Mbp 17 Gpu

I thought I read somewhere that the X1600 on the 15"MBP are underclocked for thermal reasons, but on the 17", there's enough room to keep it cool when it's clocked normally.

Does anyone know if this is true? ANd if it is, what is the performance difference? Anyone ever seen them compared side-by-side?

Somewhat correct, the 15" are indeed underclocked. However the 17" cards are throttled, in other words, they increase/decrease their speeds automatically as needed.

There can be a small, insulated seperation between the magnet and the aluminum plate so that this doesn't happen. And even if it does, the pros would far outweigh the cons.

...Not to mention that it takes a significantly strong magnetic field to magnetize aluminum. Not goint to happen with a static magnet as used in the mag latch.

That's absolutely correct, aluminum does not readily magnetize.

What a brilliant little utility - control over the fan speed.

It just can't be right that the MBP's kicking out so much heat. Surely it'll end in tears.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a little fan add-on which you could plug into the back/bottom/side/whatever of the unit and blow more air through it (that's different from blowing air at it). For me, most of the real processing's done with the lappie on the desktop with an external monitor and keyboard connected, so having some blower connected wouldn't be a problem.

To bring this back on topic, I wonder if they'll add a blow hole?
they make surfaces that dissipate heat designed specifically for laptops, think of it as a placemat like thing.

Multimedia made what I thought was a good suggestion a few weeks back in a similar situation...he suggested the person open only as much of the notebook as they had to use, leaving as much sealed as possible. The more that is sealed and the less it is used, the better it will sell.

That is a fine point, and well taken. Thank you. I'm a bit apprehensive about selling something this...fragile/pricey/new, but I suspect that'll be my best option...unless updates happen verrrrrrrrrrrry very soon.

Thanks for the help.
(i need it).

What about this Tuesday?

Probably has been thought of already but the (Product)red Nano release on friday may have been so as to give it the solo stage for maximum publicity to help the cause prior to more product soon to be released, (macbook updates and whatever else).

Red nano was released last wednesday... I'm not so sure what Apple is up to with their release dates, but it looks as if they're breaking from the Tuesday model when other events or tie-ins are present. iMac update was wednesday also, but following a holiday weekend where most people had monday off from work and government offices were closed (Labor Day, US). Aperture and the "Showtime" event were both a tuesday deal.

I suppose this tuesday (10/17) is more likely than last tuesday was... As we approach the holidays, each week brings more promise. But I'm not getting my hopes up...

yes, and the 5th anniversary of ipod is this week as well  . shuffles a ship'n soon, and ipod cinema  may be added to mark the date. good time to slip in the PRO, or maybe it will be april all over again :p

My hope is to hold my new 15" Merom Macbook Pro in my hand lately at 8. december.
I've got a Panasonic HVX200 with Firestore FS100 for two party-days and I need a firewire notebook for the video data.

what kind of outrageous price for a bto ram configuration of 4gb (2x2gb sticks) of ram in the new macbook pro that we'll se sometime soon? Perhaps add $1600 or less. Not like i'm gonna go ahead and buy apple ram though. I'll go with crucial or some other company.

17" Macbook?

left field thought... what do you think are the chances of a 17" macbook?

i know it is highly unlikely but.... who would have guessed the 24" imac?

would kill the competition....

pretty much have the choice of maxing out the ram through apple for 4 gb @ $1600 OR you can buy a new macbook :p ... i tried too see how much a mac pro (top of the line completly maxed out) would be... it'ld cost more than my car :D

My refurb gets picked up for refund today, so heres hoping tomorrow brings some good news. If not I will save another 300 quid and buy another refurb - if it now turns out purely to be a chip swap I will most likely still buy the refurb as with the difference in cost I can get another 1gb ram, parallels and a really nice laptop bag and still have some cash left over.

how long do you have to send the refurb back, is it the same, does it have to be picked up in that time, or can you say phone them up on the 14th day and they collect the week after?

Its going back as it has a faulty trackpad and they wont send out replacements for refurbs, you have to send it back and get a refund then buy another one so the sooner I send it back the sooner I get the refund.

Sods law really as I bought it because I cant wait any longer for the Merom to be released - I now need a laptop ASAP. I anticipate ordering another on wednesday if they still have them with 24 hour dispatch availability.

I think its pretty lame how Apple still use combo drives in a laptop worth £749. Even basic windows laptops for £399 have a dvd writer. Any chance that the next revision of Macbooks will have a super-drive as standard?
