I'm still a little unsure of what I will do. Even with Apple's EDU price tag I could still save $160.00 at B&H... but will it really be worth it? Apple will most likely be able to start shipping units well before third party distributors. As well as the fact that returns would be easier straight from the source.

Please excuse my ignorance. But what is B&H? Thank you

Info from the south

Hello Everyone,

I live in Mexico and just wanted you to know the following info: I ordered a new MBP about 2 weeks ago. Thay have been out of stock since then. They told me that the dry stock is generalized and apple has none in existance. The new batch of computers should arrive october 20th in San Diego port (or it was San Francisco.... I don't remember which saint.).

They have no info regarding any new specs, but by the 20th we should know if the new batch is C2D or regular vanilla. They should fullfill all international channels by the 30th, and US channels should see the new batch by the 24th.... again the tuesday keeps poping up.

Keep waiting a bit.

Did you order it locally or online?

It looks to me that returns would be nonexistent through B&H. They would save you in tax and shipping is free (as is Apple's) but they state their return policy as:

No returns on:

* Original manufacturer computers, computer products, software once opened.

* Custom-built computers & non-linear systems (and parts installed) once opened.

So it looks like you'd have to be pretty sure before you pressed the "submit" button. (Or be willing to turn around and sell it.)
They oh so generously give you your money back if you return the item UNOPENED within seven days. That's fine by me. If Apple announces CD2's tomorrow -- shipping immediately -- it goes back. If not, I will open it and live with it -- rather happily I suspect.

I caved... I bought a refurb 2.0 15" MBP. Now I have enough to buy my wife a macbook too.
So, this means new laptops this week!
Enjoy!!

I'm ashamed to admit I'll probably be the next to fall.
...even if it is just to sell the machine less than a month later.

Will CD2 use the same kind of RAM as the Yonah machines?

For now, yes...

At some point in the future, when the 800MHz FSB update happens, they will probably switch from the 667MHz DDR2 to 800MHz DDR3. But that's probably a good 6 months away.

MUCH CHEAPER. NO TAX (upfront). Reliable seller.

I can't wait until next Tuesday, and especially not the following Tuesday!

Unlike a lot of you guys, I have NO lap top, and after using a 17" 1 GIG Powerbook for six months I have been suffering desperately in its abscence. (My boss took it way and gave it to a friend.) On the 27th I start ten days with the family and I can't go home without a laptop.

So there its is. All this talk about MWSF makes me feel ill and not having a laptop has really and truly made me depressed. I can't go another week with no promise of relief in sight.

Sigh.
get over it. It's ridiculous that you "can't" live without a laptop. Apple hasn't cut off our water supply or anything, so why act like that. You can live without a laptop until MWSF, and perhaps longer. Some people just act like a laptop is a necessity to live. 10 days at home without a laptop, give me a break, nobody sympathizes for you. No one cares. Why don't you spend some quality time with your family? (After all that's why they think you're coming down, don't they? Or do they know all you want to do is buy a laptop and use it the whole time?)

Tax calculation

An interesting idea...

To get around the problem of an Apple store in your state, and thus the sizable tax, has anyone used a relative/friend billing address for payment purposes, but had the shipping address to your residence? This would give you the benefit of the Apple direct order, but without the pesky sales tax, which is the benefit 3rd party sellers have, in many cases.

Seems to me it would take about 5 minutes to add an alternate address to your credit card file and then bill the Apple Online purchase to a state with no physical Apple store. If not a credit card, what about a prepaid debit card/gift card which may have less stringent address verification (or none, who knows?)

Looking at the list, it appears there is no store in West Virginia, Kansas, Kentucky, Montana, Alabama (not for long), Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Maine, and Arkansas. Also, see: http://www.ifoapplestore.com/stores/blackout_zone.html for a few interesting maps.

Can anyone comment on whether this would work? I see no problem with it as long as you use a valid address for billing. Hell, rent a P.O. Box for a month if you need to!

from CompUSA

Here is a response as to why there is such a long wait on MBP's from CompUSA. I'm really tired of reading into all of this stuff, but I'm having a very hard time waiting...

"The delivery should be made within the 2 to 4 weeks period. When the
processing time is this long we are waiting for the product to arrive
from the manufacture."

Some people use laptops for work. Some people like taking their laptops to libraries and coffee shops so they can get out of the house and work in different environments. The flow of life can change for people who work with a portable computer and it has changed considerably for me. I've worked by my desk on a desktop computer for months and it's lost it's charm. As for visiting family, I need to communicate with friends, make arrangements for things I plan to do with my relatives, study quicktime clips from my previous expensive swimming lesson before I take two more while I'm there, etc.....

Chill out. Depersonalizing posts might be a good idea for you if you can't avoid aggressive thoughts and unpleasant language.

Peace

Doesn't work. Tax is charged based on the shipping address, not the billing address. So, the way to avoid the tax is to have the system sent to someone where there would be no tax and then they can forward the system on to you. However, the amount you would actually save in most cases would be negated by the costs of additional shipping, time and the hassle of doing so.

There is alot of specualtion that the iPodAV will be out on tuesday. If this is true we probably won't see a new MBP for a while since Apple seems to like to spread everything out.

I thought the speculation was perhaps the 24th b/c the iPod 5th anniversary is October 23. In any case, it sure would be nice if we (as in Apple) could focus our attention on something *besides* iTunes, iPod, and iMovie for a while.

Apple collects sales tax in every state that has sales tax from my understanding. I live in Arkansaw, we have no Apple store (and probably never will), and when I purchased my Dual 2 GHz Power Mac G5 they charged me sales tax. It was the first and most likely the last time that I will purchase a system directly from Apple for this reason. I think Small Dog Computing and a few others out there can do a custom configurations. I hope this is the case. If you know of any dealers who do custom configurations, please let me know. I am ready to order when the "new" MBP when they are announced.

I want the following 15" MBP: Hopefully these will be standard or an option

I don't need Apple's memory upgrades, so should I order the memory this way? - 1GB 667 DDR2 - 2x512 SO-DIMMs [Subtract $100]
2.33GHz Core 2 Duo
100GB Serial ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display Matte finish
SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth
One FireWire 400, one FireWire 800, and three USB 2.0 ports

Anything that I am missing or should do differently?;)

Hey, listen, I can't reveal my sources on this but they're inside the company at the highest levels. This is all very hush-hush.

Supposedly on Tuesday 10/24 Apple has this big laptop announcement scheduled. All new MBP form factor, Merom chipset, 802.11pre-n, Blue-Ray optical drive. $1599 EDU. And using the wireless Apple controller, you'll be able to play PS3 games on either your LCD or on a high-dev TV, thanks to a built-in HDMI connector - yes, Apple and Sony are teaming up.

Oh, and for $100 more you can have yours personally delivered by Woz himself, who'll come to your house on his Segway! Please have some cookies (vegetarian ingredients only) on hand. I hear oatmeal raisin is his favorite.
