Actually if you are buying now with the high memory prices I will definitely go the Apple upgrade route, here in Australia a stick of 1GB Sodimm costs an average of $190, which is in contrast to Apple's $380 pricing for 512 -> 2GB upgrade makes Apple's pricing very attractive.
Third party may be good, but what if you got a bum stick? There may be lifetime warranties, but depending on the manufacturer RMA procedures can be quite a nuisance too. Get the upgrades from Apple, and get free coverage for them when you buy a Applecare Protection Plan as well.
Pay no attention to him. In USA cheap RAM is as good as what Apple charges an arm and a leg for. Just
click on this link for excellent reliable and cheap RAM sticks for only $118.99 each.
Caveat: Apple appears to be changing the way they price RAM according to the new iMac & mini RAM prices. So it remains to be seen if buying 3rd party ram will be cheaper in future.

Well something is changing there at Apple because the new iMac & mini RAM prices are in line with third party prices when you go up to two 1GB sticks. But looking at the mobile RAM prices on all the old mobiles it's still much higher than 3rd parties.
Apple is asking for + $300 for a second 1GB stick on the MacBook,
+ $100 for the 512 to 1GB config from 2 x 256 stock sticks to 2 x 512 sticks or
+ $500 for two 1GB sticks vs. market price of $238 from Omni at the link above.
MacBook Pro Down-Upgrades Are From ONE 1GB stick:
DOWN to Two 512 Sticks for Minus $100 - same amount of RAM - or
UP to Two 1GB sticks for Plus $300 or $181 above the cost of adding ONE stick from Omni for $119.
On the other hand If you are upgrading RAM in the mini:
The same RAM upgrade as what goes into a MacBook from 2 x 256MB sticks to 2x1GB sticks is only $250 more - close enough - only $12 more - to let Apple do it for us since upgrading ram in the mini is quite the surgical operation.
And upgrading RAM in the NEW iMac:
From 2x512 sticks to 2x1GB sticks is only $175 - $63 BELOW what it would cost you from a 3rd party.
This is the first time I have ever seen Apple price a RAM upgrade that includes credit for the RAM they are removing when they put in the upgrade sticks.
So this is a very new and refreshingly much lower RAM pricing structure we see on these new models. Unfortunately this new policy is not represented on the Mac Pro RAM upgrade pricing scheme. Third Party RAM is still much lower than what Apple is asking the pros to pay.
So the jury is still out on what Apple is doing with RAM when it comes to the Professional side of their business. Two different marketing teams not talking to one another? Phil Schiller where are you when we need you?
