I think I'm just gonna buy a Dell. My school work is suffering and pretty much everything I need is for Windows anyways (AutoCAD, Solidworks, Server Clients, etc.) and at least now I will be able to run games if I want to. BTW, for the same price as the 17" I can get 160 gig hard drive, 512mb 7900GTX, and C2D.

Damn

I've now been waiting close to 4 months. Argghh!!!!

Oh well, I go to Australia on Friday and come back 10/21. Hopefully they'll be out by then.

Don't count on it. Apple doesn't like to sell what people want. Apple likes to sell what they want you to buy, for way too much.

If the report is true about Apple having them ready and they are waiting on marketing to "pull the trigger", my faith in Apple's arrogant stupidity will only be solidified.

That sounds awesome. I'm still going to hold out awhile longer for the C2D MBP, but that configuration sounds nice. I hope you enjoy your new computer.

Yes, please vote with your wallets and give Apple a ****ing wakeup call

too bad appl is letting the people on the fence down.

People that would switch from a PC to a mac do care about things like c2d. I get the feeling there are many people the same boat as you - would love to get a mac, but don't want to miss out on 64-bit support, better batt life, etc. that the merom offers.

Maybe n00bst3r should write a letter to His Steveness? And outline his experience before he finally got spurred to get a Dell.

Yeah...

BTW, the 17" Dell (or whatever non-apple) you get will not run OS X.
Sure you "save" money by buying something else, unless you want decent programs and to compensate for a an OS that is, well, crap.

Also, the C2D vs. CD is really not that much different at this point - 64-bit applications - or even an OS that supports it is not even out yet.
Best bet would be to at least wait until there is an OS that can support 64-bit.

Just my 2-cents.

I have been following the ship dates on the MacBooks for a few weeks now, as a way to gauge inventory and supply. As of the past few weeks the shipping dates have been 5-7 days. As of this morning the ship times were 3-5 days. As of right now the ship time is 2-4 days. It seems as though Apple is almost in market equilibrium. The MacBook has been an amazing success and Apple was most likely caught off-guard with the demand, and has just recently been able to meet that demand. Imagine if they had been trying to meet that demand with a chip that had even tighter supply (C2D). Why would Apple update the computers when they can't even meet the demand. Consumers are not dying to have the C2D. Some of us are, however people vote with their dollars, and Apple is a company that follows sales more than any other indicator, and sales of the Macbook have been robust. I think we will see a refresh within the next 2 months.

Well Macbooks are not Macbook Pros, and your final statement sounds just like this quote (that I can't remember ATM) made by an old IBM spokesman about how perhaps the world will have a market for three computers.

cheaper/easier to replace the OS than the hardware.

C2D has almost twice the transistors as the original yonah core duo. Twice the L2 cache. Better battery life. 64-bit extensions get you: ability to address more that 4GB of RAM (but 640k should be more than anyone needs :p), more registers, true 64-bit ints... I keep hearing that the 64-bit extensions will be required to play bluray or hd dvds. The best part: all this for the same price.

What might actually be worth waiting for is the Santa Rosa architecture. It will unleash the full 1066Mhz FSB of the meroms. I think it also introduces Robson - the flash memory disk caching that looks pretty hot...

For the 10,000th time Santa Rosa DOES NOT provide 1066 FSB on NOTEBOOKS.

We get a scant 667 > 800 FSB improvement - no great improvement.

You're right; at this point there is not any real difference between the D2D and the CD. But in a year there will be tow different OS that will be supported by 64 bit, and there will only be more programs after that. You pay a premium for Apple; you should get a premium product. Windows must not bother him that much if he is considering not switching. Apple is behind in the game, and they really don't seem to care. You really can't call yourself innovative if you can't get a simple processor switch done.

I am not playing. No details yet, but 26th is the date to be. I can't give any proof obviously, but for people whom are on the fence right now and are thinking about not waiting for the 26th, this information is helpful. Everybody rejoice :D

robotx, what happened d00d?!?!

It's still supposedly today, or very soon. My friend said supplies are extremely low for the macbook pro in their stores, which usually means updates. Macbooks, on the other hand, are in high supply. So those waiting for a macbook update, I wouldn't count on it. Supposedly the Macbook Pro's are ready to ship, just marketing needs to get into gear, create all the graphics, etc.

Apple Sales Rep

Spoke to an Apple sales rep who we use as a contact for the University. He said that the laptops would not be out for a few weeks as their was a problem they had to solve first. (I think we are looking at October/ November before the updated laptops come out). Just passing on what he said.

Hahaha I love how angry people are getting over not being able to get Core 2 Duo chips. I'll upgrade just for the sake of upgrading when they come out- but I can't honestly say I've ever done anything on my MacBook Pro that taxed the processor to its limit. Apple could release a new revision with a properly-clocked GPU and the same processors and I'd be happy as a clam.

Apple can't win against the retards of the internet. If they release products quickly, people will complain that the computer they just bought is a piece of crap and how they should have waited. If they stick with their current release cycle, people complain that they can't get the latest and greatest.

In the end, people will complain for the sake of complaining.

Spot on. I would add, "Misery loves company," giving threads like this such long legs.

What's a few weeks? We've been waiting this long.

Technology Analyst says "No upgrade until Santa Rosa"

Hello all, first post to this board. I must say it has been very entertaining watching these MB & MBP release threads.

To the point:
A good friend of mine is a Techology Analyst/R&D for a major international company. We were discussing the possible upgrade of the MBP today and he brought up some interesting observations & thoughts on the current lack of an upgrade.

1) Apple is a quality conscious company and for the most part releases great product. This may mean that their development branch is not geared for fast release cycles at this point.

2) Steve Jobs may have underestimated the rate of chip upgrades from Intel. Although Steve is fully aware of the "Intel Roadmap" he may not have grasped the "real world impact" of the rapid release cycle that Intel would have on his company's ability to keep pace. (Don't flame me on this please, it's just a thought)

3) With the Santa Rosa platform coming out sometime around April of 2007 it is possible that Apple has elected to skip the Merom chip upgrade and focus on getting everything ready for the Santa Rosa release. It must be realized that any chip upgrade or change to a board layout can cost several million to implement and with the issues that are known to exist with the current MB/MBP there may be a financial reason behind making a decision to skip one upgrade cycle.

4) The longer the current delay to getting new MB/MBPs out for the current C2D chip the less time remains for a company to recoup their investment in that release, before the next major update, which makes it more likely that they would be aiming for the next major release. If you say that the current Merom update does not come out until mid to late October then you have reduced the time for recovery of the return on investment to a period of around 6 months.

5) Considering that there is a Major Platform upgrade in April, Apple may be saying that too many purchasers would skip a simple Merom update and opt for waiting until Santa Rosa appears before parting with their cash.

As for myself personally I really want to see a C2D update soon, my current PB G4 only has one functional memory slot now (the second one died about a month ago). I have been a long time Apple user, my first computer was an Apple IIc (brand new at the time), I cannot envision myself ever buying a Microsoft OS run system so I'll just wait for the next Apple notebook.

Either there will be an upgrade for the MB soon, or Apple is incapable of satisfying the demand.

Today it is nearly an impossible mission to by a white MacBook 2.0 GHz at a Dealer, even Amazon states "will ship in 1-2 weeks". I do not believe this is only due to high demands. May be the Random-Shutdown-Problem screwed that thing up or Apple is trying to get rid of Yonah-equipped stock to be able to introduce Merom-Books.

We'll see...

Incapable of satisfying whose demand? Whiners on the internet?

I have friends who work at the local Apple store who are constantly talking about how they can barely keep their laptops in stock they sell so fast. I think everyone here underestimates the small minority the people who actually get upset over things like this.

95% of Apple customers: "Oh cool, the iBook has a camera now? I have to get one of those."

The other 5%- complaining blogosphere forumite circle jerkers: "ARGH!!! GREEDY OLD PAPA $TEVE JOB$ I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS! WHERE IS MY MEROM!!! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. I AM DISPATCHING AN EMAIL AT ONCE TO STEVE@APPLE.COM EXPLAINING THAT HIS COMPANY IS ON THE BRINK OF COMPLETE FAILURE BECAUSE HE CANNOT MEET MY PRODUCT DEMANDS. I NEED MY 10% PERFORMANCE INCREASE OFFERED BY MEROM. ARRRGGHHH I AM SO ANGRY.         I WILL BE FORCED TO BUY THE $350 COUPON-STACKED DELL LATITUDE IF THEY DON'T RELEASE MEROM MACBOOKS SOON! THAT WILL SHOW APPLE!!!!"

Why do ppl get so angry about others getting angry? Impulsive behaviour abound.

To add to major kong as well - my local suppliers don't appear to have very much portable stock at all - esp the MB (and it's not back to school in my area) - all other products seem to be in regular supply

I'm not angry, I think this forum is hilarious. It's like... those insane apple people who you've only heard about... they really exist.
