Thought i might as well throw some more idle and probably irrelevant speculation into the pot - here's a quote from www.musiclive.co.uk, where apple are one of the exhibitors.

Apple At Music Live
The world’s favourite music-computer people, Apple will be demonstrating their latest hard- and software at Music Live 2006 in conjunction with Sound Control. Mac Pros and MacBook Pros will feature heavily in the company’s presence at the show, the new machines running Logic Pro, Logic Express and Garageband alongside various third party hardware peripherals.

Could this be a possible release date, 3-5 November? :p

*getting desperate now ;)

Hey all, first post, greets from .pt

I used to be a long time windows user. WinXP made my chest pump out in pride. I sneared at other platforms (except my ps2 !!!). My back hair fanned out like the feathers on a peacock.

Then I got into rehab, thank you Apple for the "Get a Mac" ads. I felt like a complete and utter idiot, like if someone somehow opened the unlocked pandora's box while I was still trying to figure out how to pick the lock... with the lid open right in front of me.

Then, last week, I had contact with an alien called MBP. Since then, and I must stress I am NOT joking, the ding ding ding dong sound of winXP booting up pearces my eardrums. I am selling my Asus a6jc t2300 and loads of other left over audio devices I have and get myself a new C2D.

Brave New "audio prod" World for me...

Ok, thanks, you can stop clapping now.... ;)

Two quick questions.

1 - what does BTO and CTO mean? I know its the screen being glossy or matte, but which is which and could someone please explain why the heck does anyone want a glossy screen? I mean, the minimum lightsource behind makes so much reflection it's insanely frustrating to work in the sun, or with office lights all round you... you keep having to dodge the reflections to get any work done! I have heard designers etsay they like it for the quality... 99% dont even calibrate their screen colour profiles, why would they care anyway ?!?! I am indeed confused... because with low exterior light, contrast between glossy / matte after 30 mins work cannot be diferentiated. I've done dozen "blind" tests!

2 - About the C2D... albeit being too in the "next tuesday" frenzy, wouldn't it be logical to release the MBP C2D at the MacExpo UK 26th-28 October, rather than a "silent" update ?

cheerios all round!

No need for all that bravado talk, you are just buying a new brand of computer, whoop pee doo!

1) BTO = Built to order, same with CTO actually...

2) All predictions are only speculations, nobody knows if it will even be in 2006.

Sounds good, but they could be, and probably are, referring to the MacBook Pro Rev. 1 as being a 'new machine'.

It would be nice.

Excellent... more choices. Now I'll have to find the time to play with them and see which works out best.

They do very different things.

VNC allows you to remotely control a different system and interact with it, with the display being output on the controlling machine.

Synergy allows you to control two systems with a single keyboard/mouse. No display redirection. It's basically a software keyboard/mouse switch. It works well.

From what you'd said, I understood display redirection was what you wanted, hence my mentioning of VNC.

I know you're right, but I think it's pretty sad that someone would refuse to buy just because they have to spend an extra 20min (or more if an non-technical person attempting) to do the swap.

I mean, sure it's a pain...and if I had to swap out MY hard drive every day I'd be pissed, but most people don't need to do that.

The main issue here isn't the time spent swapping the hard drive...it's the fact that you may void your warranty in doing so.

What's the relevance of swapping hard drives in the laptop. What's wrong with good old external drives (I have two five hundred gig lacies) Why would anyone void their warranty rather than just go out and buy an cheap external drive ??

tired of waiting

Ive been watching, waiting..reading all the posts and reading all the speculations of when the new MBPs will be released...waited til Photokina..hoping the Core2Duo MBPs would be released..only to be disappointed...so screw it I thought!..Im tired of waiting on when Apple will release them..I had to have a new laptop and thats what I did...Im the proud owner of a brand new 17" MBP with 2GB of Ram and couldnt be happier!!! :) :D :) :D :):D :):D :)

Now knowing my luck the **NEW** MBP's will come out next week!

but at least I have a new laptop now!!

The MacBook warranty isn't voided if you swap the drive on it. That's a major point.

The other is, these are portable machines. Having to carry an external drive is a hindrance to portability.

Convenience, from time to time that $300-last-year-top-capacity drive will get superceded and drop to a more attractive price, and people may want to upgrade towards that instead.

Cheers to that; I was doing the same exact thing, but when my old computer died last week, I couldn't wait any longer, and ordered a new MBP myself. I have the 15'' and am very pleased with my purchase. Enjoy your computer! (And even if they do release the new ones next week, well, misery loves company, right? )

Battery-Only Field Production

Because when you are in the field and dependent on battery-only, the externals are useless. I'm thinking of the MB or MBP as a digital video recorder tethered to a camera being fed the live video directly to the internal HD via Toast or Final Cut Pro. Both can see cameras and record native DV on the HD.

I've done this with my old PowerBook G4 and it works great. But being able to swap out 160GB drives at the end of each day of shooting would be an added bonus. I'll just go with a white 2GHz 2GB C2D MacBook if Apple doesn't add this feature to the MBP.

That is also a consideration for use that I've had as well.

Although if it really came down to it I could probably use a MacPro as well. It would just require a longer extension to the camera, and not have the ability to be moved around as easily. I guess the upside to that is once the rig is set up, it probably wouldn't be moved much. However, it sure would be nice to move it around as needed instead of working around the stationary unit.

I "suppose" I could very well just record and then transfer to an external drive at the end of the day, but it would be much more convenient to just swap out drives.

You sound like Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers).

I'll take your word on it, I haven't seen the flick yet. :)

It is a reasonable theory though, just as a CYA on Apple's part.

This may or may not be relevant (From Apple Insider):

Analysts for Citgroup on Monday said they expect Apple Computer to sell as many as 18.8 million iPods during the December quarter, but cut their rating on shares of the company to "Hold" from "Buy" due to a lack of potential revenue upside in the near term.

My point: Now that analysts are beginning to discourage the public to buy Apple shares, their stock has already begun to descend. In my mind, Apple will release the new laptops to help bolster their revenue, and continue the rise in their stock. Apple obviously wants their company to continue to grow, and immediately releasing the new MBP's in the beginning of this fiscal year would have a large impact, especially as the holiday season approaches. So...MBP'S TOMORROW!

*sorry if this post doesn't make sense or is completely wrong...i'm kind of out of it right now (too much waiting  )

Whoever told you that is full of crap. It is perfectly okay to swap out the hard drive.
I've personally done it, and later sent in laptops for repair...not only personal, but for corporate clients.

I'm with you now, I had a Toshiba laptop for a year and it was like carrying a sack of bricks so a mactop and a external hard drive (with its accompanying brick) never seems like a big deal to me weightwise. Plus the fact if I had been 'out on the field' i'd have been looking for a electricity point an hour later anyway cos that sucker used juice like it was going out of fashion lol :)

You know, sometimes I wonder if Apple gets all thier ideas from this website.

I think they have an employee who's only job is to search around this site, and look for new ideas.:D

There's going to be rioting in the streets tomorrow if Apple doesn't announce this damn MacBook Pro revision!

I don't want to be on the forums when the tragedy happens. If the store is still up Tuesday morning at 8:45 am EDT, there's going to be a lot of hollering here! :D

The wait is over

....I couldn't wait anymore my PB finally died and a MBP is still smoke and mirrors so I bit the bullet and bought a Mac Pro instead.

Murphys Law is that now I am out of the market for a MBP they will released soon..hahahaha....doesn't mean I wont get one though.

Happy Days........

My god Apple, enough already. Release the MBP tomorrow and nobody will get hurt. Is this some kind of sick joke? This is unethical treatment of your own people Apple, if you don't release them soon there will be MUTINY.

Maybe so. But then there are a lot of sources that are full of crap (based on a Google search and other posts in this forum).
