They do very different things.

VNC allows you to remotely control a different system and interact with it, with the display being output on the controlling machine.

Synergy allows you to control two systems with a single keyboard/mouse. No display redirection. It's basically a software keyboard/mouse switch. It works well.

From what you'd said, I understood display redirection was what you wanted, hence my mentioning of VNC.

Yep, you're right. Went and checked it out and it is exactly as you said. I am looking more for pitching the display. So it's a comparison of osxvnc and chicken of the vnc for now...

On the subject of external drives, I was considering using a large external drive, something like a 300+ GB for home use, and copying files to the MBP's HD as needed. Granted, you won't always have everything, but you can always plan ahead for the next day/week whatever. Plus it guards against Murphy's Law, which usually in my case, is par for the course....;)

And besides, 90% of my use of the computer would be at home, with the other 10% on trips, so I won't be too far from the home base.

Whoever told you that is full of crap. It is perfectly okay to swap out the hard drive.
I've personally done it, and later sent in laptops for repair...not only personal, but for corporate clients.

You neglected to mention that your warranty still holds assuming you do it right, we have at least one member on these forums who destroyed their MBPs while trying to upgrade their hard drive.

If you reckon you can do it yourself good on you, just don't cry when you fsck something up, which given the number of steps required to accomplish, is probabilistically decked against you.

Disassembling laptops is always a real pain. In most cases, it's takes a while and requires a lot of patience if you don't want to damage something.

Most PC laptops have a panel on the bottom that can be removed to easily swap the HD out.

In the UK store the mid-range MBP, which was showing 2 days shipping, has now gone back to 24 hours. So ALL MBPs in the UK store now show 24 hours shipping.

This reduces the liklehood of an update doesn't it?

Nope.

The iMacs were listed as 24hrs right before the C2D update.

Not necessarily. The 24 hour ship time could just as much indicate the arrival of a new lot of C2D MBPs. Apple likes to ship new products immediately so ship times should fall to around 24 hours before an update.

As goes the MHz myth goes the shipping time myth.

Look for the C2D MBP ( no Mac Book ) Oct.3rd or 10th. appear on Apple's website at about 7AM Cupertino time. ;)

No.

Apple will release the update when they are ready to and current MBP stock has little to do with it. The reality of it is that there will be lots of current MBP models available after the updated ones ship. And they will be available at some sort of discount until stock is depleated. Same thing that happened with the iMac G5 when the Intel models were released and with the first Intel models with the C2D updated ones came out. Depending on stock levels, they may show the older models available on Apple's web store for a while or they may not. If stock is low, they will probably funnel them down to retail stores to clear them out. There's a good chance that 90% of the systems sold through Apple's web store (even the stock configurations) are still BTO anyway so switching to the updated model isn't a big deal to instantly transition.

It's impossible to say what the delay is and why we haven't seen the C2D updated notebooks yet. I think we're going to see more than just a CPU upgrade, but what remains to be seen. I doubt it's going to be a total re-design, but I wouldn't be shocked if we see upgraded GPU and new optical drive models with faster write times and DL support in the 15" MBP. Of course, the delay could just come down to airflow and cooling issues with the current design and we have been waiting for them to come up with new software and better fans to cool these units.

Difficulty Of Swapping-Upgrading HDs In MBP Makes A HD Bay Needed

Which is exactly the reason the easy access bay is so needed to put the "Pro" back in MBP.

I completely agree with you, my point is that the act of taking it apart to swap out the drive is not going to void your warranty.

If someone breaks their computer is the process, maybe they should have given it to someone who can fix computers.

Also, this is why manufacturers have 'take-apart' manuals.
If you follow it (even a lay-person), you will not 'fsck' anything up at all.

Who?

There is no guarantee that *random PC laptop technician* is any more competent at upgrading a MBP than <insert random geek>. Likewise the only people who are truly qualified in servicing your MBP wouldn't install your third party hard drive in, even if you pay them!

*clap clap clap*

This is what you get for supporting a computer company chosen by 3% of the populace, that's because said company doesn't offer much choices and options to start with!

Please tell me where you can order a copy of a service manual. Don't point to websites like ifixit etc, the point is you are not supposed to even have access to these unless you are a certified technician!

Good feeling.

I have a good feeling about tomorrow as the release date... althought it might just be that I have to goto the bathroom. Either way, if anyone here is a student at NMU, party at 201 spalding hall... or worlds largest geek uprising. Apple is the one to decide here.

Tuesday October 3rd has a really good ring to it... like... Chilli Cheese Dog. Hopefully tomorrow will not give me indigestion and bad gas, much like the chilli cheese dog.

The key is to visualize the win, or threatening an apple store worker (just kidding! I love apple employees, they have cheery fake british accents!). Again, apple is the one to decide here.

Anywho, I'm pulling an allnighter! Who's with me?? We need as many people as possible to hit the refresh button at 7am Cupertino time. (anyone else have their widget clock set to Cupertino Time? I know I do. To hell with EST, PST, and the other time zones, Cupertino has its own NOW!)

I believe I just set the world record for typing the fastest in a straight jacket. Good night to you all. Tomorrow is the day!

You mean they aren't really british?

I'm with you - though for different reasons. Got a huge computer architecture assignment due tomorrow... But I'll swing by the Apple store soon as I get back from class!

I'm afraid to tell you that i've been playing this "tomorrow's the day" game every tuesday. I'm just going to be pessimistic about this one and just say it's not the day and maybe it'll happen. Maybe the store will go down just so it will say the ipod shuffles are shipping. That would really suck. But I hope tomorrows not the day. Just so it will happen. Maybe what some websites are saying about NAND and 802.11N at mwsf is true for the macbook pro and they won't update untill then. If it doesn't happen this month, i don't count on it for the rest of the year and this may be a good thing for us all.

You are sadly mistaken, that is not how Apple does things. We are talking about a company that'd release a product, act like nothing is happening, and then barely 3 months release a new product and tout it as being 5X faster than the previous revision.

If you think Apple cares about your feelings you are wrong. :p

What'd be likely to happen is, Apple will probably update it soon (not just before Christmas, but soon, to keep it from clashing too close with whatever they got in MWSF if they got any).

Then during MWSF they may put in marginal improvements and sell it again. Then likewise during MWSF they will do another Rev.

If past trends are any indication, better things seem to come at the start of the year during MWSF to speed up what'd otherwise be a sales slump. People buy at the end of the year during the christmas holidays anyway, irregardless of updates, so they'd probably just release a mediocre update in time for the holidays as a sweetener to those who are in the market, and then update during the sales slump to catch the fence sitters.

At least that's how I would do things, if I am very gay, which Apple is.

You seem very pessimistic macman... but i like it. Imagine how excited you will be tomorrow after being so down about it! :)

Tomorrow is the day. If not, I will drive (i live in michigan) as far as i can on my 1/2 tank of gas then run the rest of the way to Cupertino to fart in Steve Jobs face and call him a belligerent whore. I will quickly be shot down by Jobs robot assasins (powered by the new c2d macbook pros... Talk about IRONY!).

This very well could be the Taurine talking.

I'll focus my positive energy on hoping for the introduction of a new MBP... perhaps we should all do this... We should set a time to focus our energies on the MacBook Pro. Maybe we could even find a ouija board that would tell us its exact time of arrival.

Ah! I'm too tired to pull an all-nighter, but I will be back to posting tomorrow morning. Maybe you guys could start a thread with a make-your-own-story to make the time pass by quicker... counter-strike is always fun, too, though. :)

What Apple needs is a product update phone registry, which fanboys will pay a subscription fee to enrol in. Then, when a product is released or revised you will get an instant phone call with an automated voice informing you what has been updated.

Hopefully that automated voice will sound just like the voice they use in Australia's 133622 (133-MAC) hotline :D

I think draft 802.11n and flash is pretty much a given for 1H07.

I'm curious why a lack of an update this year would be a good thing though?

I think more importantly we need a counceling hotline. Perhaps someone can publish a self help book?
