imacs

im most likely wrong:confused: , but didnt they use the merom for imacs because of the sleek, sexy, ergonomic design of the imac? its a mobile chip but its for a very compact desktop, one can gain maximum amounts of ergonoms from using it... if i could find a way to make an imac portable, i might just get it over a MB or MBP

My guess is they didn't want to disrupt the mobile line in the middle of the back-to-school buying period, so they went with upgrading the desktops first.

I guess the other possibility is they felt the desktops needed it more given the PC world was moving to Core 2 Duo too. Granted, the rest of the desktop world pretty much is going with Conroe but it's basically the same processor, FSB aside...

I admin I was a little surprised not to see the iMac go Conroe tho' ...

Hi Ergle,

Remember I was asking you about Microsoft keyboard remapping? Hehe. Only just noticed they sell one for Mac, hence the seemingly left field question. Thought you were talking about their PC keyboards on Mac :)

Think I'll order an iMac if there's no update today, to tide me over on trips back to UK. Probably a stock 20" model, for giving to my mum afterwards. I had similar thoughts about avoiding disruption during back-2-skool period, & am in a "cheerfully negative" mood now, & am assuming no update before MacExpo London. I think getting the iTunes movie heaven iMac 24" model out there mandated general iMac refresh.

Was thinking this a while back. Get some lan party gear! :D

Sorry, I must have missed the question, but it's moot -- I was talking about their PC keyboards on PCs mostly (tho' I've used them on a Luxo iMac briefly) ... ahem. It "just worked" on the iMac, IIRC, the windows key became command, but nore sure... I tend to know what's what by typing it rather than knowing it... It worked well, anyway.

When it comes to computers, I've used most things and own quite a few (old Alpha, SPARC, MIPs machines to name but a few...)

Edit: added remap stuff in since it seemed pertinent.

Yes. Still seems like Conroe or at least it's 4-core decendant, Kentsfield, should have a future in the Mac family as the driving force in a yet to be announced new line of headless Macs in the same price points as the iMacs - $1-2k providing more power than the iMacs but still less than the 8 core Dual Clovertown Mac Pros early next year.

Perhaps this will be the January 9 SteveNote surprise for 2007. iMacs can remain strong all-in-ones with the same power structure as the mobiles but with bigger screens and bigger faster HDs while a headless 4-core line with Kentsfield can sell for the same money to satisfying those who want more power and different screen options but not the ultra power of a Mac Pro which will be advancing to an 8-core base by January.

Long sentence wasn't that? :p

The level of power that we are about to see come to market this Winter 2007 is really mind boggling. Surely Apple will want to bring 4-core computing to the masses with Kentsfield in January somehow don't you think?

Apologies for the lack of editing, it's too late and I'm too lazy.

I'm sure 4-core will surface in the consumer systems, but my guess is maybe 10% of users will notice -- most people just aren't doing anything that pushes dual core systems remotely, even...

My guess is if the iMac is to go 4-core, it'll be after a major redesign. I have doubts about the heat -- which is my guess why it didn't get Conroe.

The only thing I am curious about is, was it because it couldn't really handle it at all, or because it could but the design staff considered the fan too loud?

Or was it just a drop-in replacement job for most models and that's why it's Merom for now... (does anyone know if the mobo for the 17/20 models was redesigned?)

I'd guess at the fan-too-loud theory personally but all seem reasonable...

But maybe it's not so funny; this is what we've been reduced to. I've certainly been cycling through the rumor sites wondering where the rumors are. :(

I have, too; but the Merom MBP rumors have proven to be so consistently wrong that I don't think I really want to see any more between now and the actual release date.

doesn't look like it. i think the stores would have been down by now. at least that was the case for the new c2d imacs...

Isn't it likely that any refresh now is just going to be a relatively minor one and that anyone who can wait a while should? That is, the release of Leopard is likely to be accompanied by much more significant redesigns of hardware, cosmetically at the very least. The MBP's form factor is not hugely different from the PowerBook's, and the PowerMac/MacPro is basically the same case.

Is that over-optimistic? Anyone know the history on hardware redesigns at the time of or very soon after major OS upgrades?

Ugh that isn't good news, I guess I'll be on my way to eat a bit of breakfast then....

I'll keep my fingers crossed, anyway.

It went down closer to 9am eastern time last time.

apple would be mad not to refresh by holiday season and with the looks of it there isnt enough stock for the holiday season.

But i have a feeling we won't see an update until next year.

I really want my new MBP now!!

I've heard rumours that it might happen in January's Macworld. I don't know if I would personally be willing to wait that long, because things can get delayed so easily. A lot of us here were expecting the merom laptops to be released in August/mid September, but we have been kept waiting. With the current models about 5-6 months old, it just seems like a bit of a ripoff to buy now, too.

Why?!!!

Why do we have to go through this EVERY TIME?!!!

Usually Apple refreshes the Apple Online store around 6am Pacific Standard time [West Coast U.S.].

It is 5:15am PST right now. If these refreshes are going to happen today, I would expect the online store to go down within the next half an hour or so and see it come back up by 6am.

Or they might refresh them later this week, but I've got a feeling it'll be this week ... or next ... maybe later. =D

I've been seeing Intel's new Core 2 commercials A LOT within the past week and I hadn't seen them before that. Maybe Apple was just waiting to ride a little bit of Intel's own publicity wave to get an extra boost in hype and sales.

Sounds like good marketing to me.

... Right...

So someone please explain to me this price tag for this MBP...

http://www.mega-oferta.com/product_info.php?products_id=1953

there's no "refurbished" sign I can see

This is the first $1999 model introduced in January [Core Duo 1.83Mhz / 128VRAM].

Cost has come down significantly on these. But it does look like they're liquidating them before something happens. ;)

Otherwise they'll be stuck with really old stock.

From their FAQ page:

Are Your Products New, Used or Refurbished?
All products we carry are brand new, factory sealed, complete with all factory supplied accessories, and a Full Manufacturers WorldWide Warranty.

I've never heard of this company though. Are they reliable?

wow, that's a really good price... if someone was looking for a good looking machine for regular everyday use it would be a GREAT bargain!

So is Apple the only company not to be offering Core 2 in its laptop range right now? Seems like everyone else has updated.

give it up. This Tuesday will come and go just like last tuesday with no news. Apple is not gonna release new MBPs until next year, inline with the release of their new OS and the 4 year anniversary of the G4.
I think i finally bought into this mantra as well... now i'm just hoping for a really great updated product with all of the heat issues resolved with a ventilated case and other worthwhile upgrades like a quick swap HD, etc.

If only Apple sold the part at that price, they would be pretty competitive with Dell (which everyone, no one knows why, always compare to Apple).

Not that Apple needs to be competitive with Dell but for that price you really get one nice looking laptop!
