$1400?!?!. erm yeah not gonna happen. I'll stick to using the software via workstation in my uni.

1400?!?, thats a refurb BlackBook plus change for RAM

Well, I don't know about your University, but when I was in school (DePaul University) and taking stats, they would give students copies of SPSS (or SAS)...free. You may want to write the prof an email asking if your school does something like that.

I will wait till next year then, Apple can keep dreaming if they think I will buy an outdated model at the current prices.

I don't understand why they bother to put C2D in the imacs. They will more than likely not be used for professional applications that require the most cpu power, so why waste the upgrade? Seems like a backward ass move on the part of apple. They should have put those Meroms in the mbp.

You are right

generik, you are so right. While my fanboy excitement had almost gotten the best of me, I will also wait. Why buy now, when we know we can get 64 bit, maybe a redesign, maybe more base HD gigs, etc. at about the same price point. I'm waiting.

Steve, its your move....

So, you guys who are in the US - what date is Black Friday this year? Maybe they'll just wait and put it out that week...

Tuesday is not over yet... Doesn't Apple usually do press releases at 9:00 a.m. pacific??

Nah, I don't think it is today. All signs seem to indicate it is damned close, but probably not today.

I vaguely remember something from the techie people at the Uni saying that SPSS works with OSX but not with the Intel chipped Macs. It would be next year before the software did that. Can't find the email to confirm though.

Couple of notes:
-SPSS for Mac will not run correctly on any intel based Mac. In fact, according to the box, it won't even install!

-It sounds like you're a student, you should look into getting the Grad Pack version of SPSS. It's only $209 at my campus computer store, and has enough power for most students. Otherwise, follow the link below.

Seen, its not universal yet. Although my plan was to install on windows if it wasnt OSX compatible but thank God it is.

Free is good, i'll ask the tech help desk tomorrow.

Thanx for all the replies.

That move still baffles me. Even if they only put them in the 24" models thatll be understandable but putting those chips in a consumer line over a pro line is gobsmacking. Yet another WTF!? Apple move.

The rest of the article is here:

That is one of the dumbest things I've ever read -- even coming from MacWorld. In a decade or two, nobody knows what we will be using. If the last 20 years is any indication, 64bit will probably be obsolete and a memory, just as 16bit CPUs are now.

Even Intel, with their plans of world domination, can't plan a CPU roadmap out more than a couple years at a time and the target for 3 years from now is a guestimate, even for them. For all we know, we could see a breakthrough in quantum circuits in the next few years or even a radical new concept in general CPU design that changes everything almost overnight.

Remember, only 4 years ago, we were hearing all sorts of claims from Intel, IBM and AMD that 4GHz CPUs would be commonplace in a year or so and we'll hit 10GHz by 2007. Now it's almost 2007, 4GHz is still a rarity and chipmakers have opted for multiple CPUs on a single die due to MHz limitations and decreasing power per watt in relation to MHz increase.

I completely agree. I simply can not comprehend how Apple are charging substantially more for a CD laptop than other manufacturers are charging for C2D laptops. Even if you factor in better design (which is obviously subjective) and extra software, the price still seems far too high.

To pay premium prices and not get the latest CPU is unnacceptable to me, and I'm sure many potential switchters will decide Apple isn't for them when they compare Apple laptops to other makes. Consumers will see the 2 in C2D and make the simple, and in my opinion correct, assumption that Apple are using previous generation chips in even their flagship laptops, whilst the rest of the world has moved on.

Can't agree with you more.

I went to my local Best Buy and saw an HP and Sony laptop on display sporting the C2D for less than half the price of the current MacBookPro.

To me, buying the current MBP is like overpaying by 3 times for outdated equipment.

If you want a Mac laptop, you almost have to wait for the new ones, the current ones are way overpriced for what you get.

Agreed. I can only hope that Apple has something mind blowing (or at least quite unexpected) that makes us all say "oh that's what took so long...". At the very least, there should be 160GB hard drive options available on BTO - gees!

Yeah, that's not going to happen. My prediction: A small boost in CPU speed with the C2D, 1gig standerd and maybe a small hard drive upgrade, but otherwise it will all pretty much stay the same.

I'm just very pessimistic at the moment.

and why should they do in another way?
Imagin you could get profits of billions with a toy. Why you should exert oneself for getting the same profit with so much more work??
Is Apple is now a musiccompany and producer of hightech toys?

If we can get a 15" C2D MBP with FW800, 8x DL superdrive, and a 160GB hd, i think it'll be worth the wait.

...provided the wait isn't until Q3, 2036.

in one way it´s good that Apple healthy again. In another way Steve Jobs is a knallhart moneymaker. And if its better for him to let wait his customers and clean up his stock, ok. But i find it very strange to never know how to make a buying decission. We don´t want to know all details of the deal. But we want to know the direction to make our own decission.
That´s all.

I need your opinion

Okay ladies and gentlemen, I need your opinion on the following ...

Would you buy an almost new MBP 2.16Ghz model for $2000USD ($2300CAD), no tax of course, or would you just wait and hope that the new low-end MBP will be bumped to 1gig ram, 100gig HD and 256meg video and then buy that for EDU price?

Any thoughts?!?!?!

Thanks

Perhaps we should write a letter:

Dear Steve, what´s going on? Let us know how much money we should pay that you find us worth to be heard.

On the other hand I think Apple will do it the best way they can.
It´s all about the uncertainly situation.
