Could there be a launch on friday, considering that monday is a holiday here in the US, and Apple could be counting on big sales #'s on that date (especially now that there are actual stores in malls)?

I honestly don't think it'll be this Friday, I'm just hoping for Tuesday or Wednesday.

However, I guess we can never put anything past Mr. Jobs.

Hello I'm new.
Bring on the flames....

The reason Apple likes Tuesday is fairly simple in concept.

Most announcements from other manufacturers in the industry tend to come out on Monday.

So, their philosphy has been to let the press have their perceived fun on Monday, and then have some real fun on Tuesday. Also, this gives them the spotlight without other interruptions.

Well, that and their press whores. :D

I'm sure there's some big mumbo jumbo explanation, and statics analysis stuff to go with it, but this is the big picture.

However, they don't always make Tuesday announcement. If it's the opening day of a big event, like MWSF, and it isn't a Tuesday then they don't wait.

Also the recent iMac upgrade happened on a Wednesday, but that was after that Monday was a big national holiday in the US (Labor Day). Which in that case, they still held their "second day of the work week" mentality.

I've been waiting since May! HAH! Seriously... this is wreaking havoc on my schoolwork. All I can think about is, 'When am I gonna get my freaking MBP?'

Thankfully, my mind and body have given up on the updates anytime soon, so I no longer wake up in the morning and use all the energy I have to dash over to the computer to check MR and apple.com (consequently leaving me in a daze for the rest of the day when I see that everything is unfortunately unchanged :().

Hey, I've been waiting since May too!! Well, May 2005 that is!!

...seriously :(

When the heavily rumored Powerbook G5 announcement turned into the Intel bombshell at the WWDC in June, I was forced to wait for the Rev B MBP... the wait is almost over :)

Like others have said, apple wont release until they have the 2.33Ghz meroms.

I think this "shortage" is somewhat imaginary. I know someone who has a 2.33GHz 24" iMac. The delay on ordering one is only 2-3 days. There doesn't appear to be any delay on C2D in Dell notebooks -- all the ship dates are two weeks out regardless of configuration. And from experience (tons of it), it's rare that Dell actually builds a custom config and ships within 10 days anyway. So I don't know what people are talking about... Plenty of people in the Dell forums and elsewhere that already have 2.33GHz C2D.

So far none of the major tech sites have reported any major shortages and Intel has said nothing. Intel is usually very forthcoming with information on shortages.

I'm sure the 2.33GHz CPUs are probably fewer in number than the 2.0 and 2.16 models, as is normal with all the higher speed chips of a CPU line. But there is no real indication of any true shortage that would cause delay in releasing a highly anticipated product.

I don't believe for an instant that C2D Macbook [Pro] systems are being held up due to a chip shortage. Sorry, don't buy it. It's a lot more likely that Apple and Intel had to deal with cooling issues and other fixes and it's just taken longer to iron the bugs out. I'm not expecting huge changes to the MB[P] lines, just the Merom CPU, possibly a GPU refresh (hopefully) and a restructuring of the base configurations. We should see a few new options like the 160GB HDD.

I would love to wait for the C2D's in the MBP, but I desperatly need to order my MBP now for school...

Should I just order a basic system and hope they release the C2D within 14 days?

Seems like a big risk to me...

Posts 542/3 are the only quotes i can find right now in regards to the store being taken down a few days before the iMac update.

I think it was on the morning of the 5th september? iMac released the next day!

Im NOT saying i think it will be 2moro but i do think its close!

1. store down temporarily with no updates
2. End of ipod deal in europe (thus concluding it wordwide)
3. Shipping down to 24hrs as with the iMacs.
4. Lack of stock in every store iv been to, be it highstreet or specialist.
5. Start of Q4/ new FY (whichever it is again)
6. Educational institutions being delayed with bulk orders... (apple would probs lose contracts if they sold an institution products that will be kind of obselete very soon),
7. Im sure there are 100s of other thing pointing in the right direction now but like i have said many times before its all speculation.

Hell someone may actually read this at apple and think, damn they're on to us lets keep them guessing....

..i just dont know anymore.

10/10 fingers crossed!!!

don't know if anyone's noted this yet but...
Gizmodo (www.gizmodo.com) posted a blurb today that Apple's refurb section of the online store has been flooded with refurb MacBook Pro's... it notes this may point to an imminent update.

Wednesday October 11 Is Next Likely Release Day

More likely Wednesday October 11th next. Second day after a national US holiday. :)

SAVE Page MBP Listings Have Been That Way For 3 Months Or More

Except all those different refurb models have been on that page for the past 3 months. There is nothing new about that long list of choices AT ALL. So the Gizmodo "story" is totally bogus.

Won't this end up being a Rev. A MBP again if it is anything more than a processor upgrade?...

Its the second day after Lief Erickson Day... is Lief Erickson's day really a determining factor in the release date of the MBP C2D? On a happier note... that is the day of Afghanistan's free and open elections a couple of years ago.

Either way, it would be cool to see a redesigned MacBook Pro... even so just a processor upgrade would be nice. Or a 12" widescreen model to replace my MB.

what does all this revzvs. rev b mean? hopefully it'll be soon, i'm seriously considering buying a macbook really really soon.

What if they don't come out until 2007 ?????

I hate to even say this, but it must be done....
Has anyone thought that Apple may NOT update the MBP's until either MWSF or OSX 10.5?
That would mean nothing until the new year!

We should all write to Apple to try and get an answer from them. (I did, but little hopes of a reply). It still doesn't make sense to keep consumers in limbo. It frustrates the h*ll out of me, for one...

I disagree, I think the current MBPs are a ripoff. You can buy a Sony VGN-FE790 with a 2.33GHz C2D for under $2000 (see http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INT...IONotebookComputers_FE_Series&Dept=computers).

Now please don't start flaming me saying things like "okay, go buy that damn Sony then". I am simply pointing out that competitors are building comparable machines with the next generation CPU and charging $500 less. With that in mind, I do feel the current MBP price is a bit much. I myself bought a 2GHz MBP back in January and I was more than happy to pay that price then. However, 9 months later and I don't expect to be paying the same price for a machine that is 9 months old (the ONLY difference to the one I bought is that they now have an extra 166MHz).

Basically, the MBP wasn't a rip off 9 months ago, but in 9 months the machine hasn't changed and neither has the price, so today, in my view, it is indeed a rip off.

I'm with maverick when it comes to the current MBP being a ripoff. In fact, I think it is a bigger ripoff than the comparison between it and the Sony FE790(which is itself overpriced, considering its low res screen and flimsy build) implies.

I am in the market for a 15" laptop to replace my 4 year old 14" business class PC laptop. Having done a fair amount of research over the past couple of weeks, I have concluded that the closest PC equivalent to the current 15" MPB is the Dell Latitude 820. Below is a side by side comparison of some key features:

Processor:
Latitude: 2.00 GHz Core 2 Duo
MBP: 2.16 GHz Core Duo

Winner: Draw (Latitude will be ahead in 1-2 years, once more 64 bit apps come on stream)

Operating System:
Latitude: Windows XP Professional
MBP: Mac OS

Winner: MBP (Jury is still out on Leopard versus Vista)

Screen:
Latitude: 15.4 inch Wide Screen WSXGA (1680 x 1050 pixels)
MBP: 15.4 inch Wide Screen WXGA (1440 x 900 pixels)

Winner: Latitude by a landslide (it's available with 1920 x 1200 resolution!!!)

Memory:
Latitude: 2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS (up to 4.0 GB)
MBP: 2.0GB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 2 DIMMS (up to 2.0 GB)

Winner: Draw (Latitude has room to grow once 2 GB DIMMS come down in price)

Graphics
Latitude: 512MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 120M TurboCache
MBP: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB GDDR3 memory

Winner: Latitude
[Edit: could be a draw, as Dell's video card may not really be true 512MB]

Hard Drive:
Latitude: 100GB 7200RPM
MBP: 100GB 7200RPM

Winner: Draw

Security:
Latitude: Biometric Security (fingerprint reader)
MBP: None

Winner: Latitude

Service Plan:
Latitude: 3 Year Limited Warranty plus 3 Year NBD On-Site Service with
Gold Technical Support Gold
Apple: Apple Care (3 Years)

Winner: MBP(by a hair)

Useful Software:
Latitude: None
MBP: iLife

Winner:MBP (by a landslide)

Price:
Latitude: $2262.00 ($1990.56 with a corporate discount)
MBP: $3248.00

Winner:Latitude (by a landslide)

So...is a $1000 premium ($1300 for me, since I am able to get the corporate discount) enough to justify buying the MBP solely on the merits of its better OS? For me the answer is NO. Still, I am willing to wait a little longer (my drop Apple date is Friday after Thxgvg). Apple will get my money so long as there is an updated MBP (C2D, removable HDD, higher res screen) selling for about $2500 (sans Apple Care, but with the specs shown above). Anything short of that and Apple will have lost another potential PC convert.

For your extra money you get a much nicer looking machine in a smaller form factor. Also, and I could be wrong here, I'd imagine the X1600 is a sight better for gaming. And "TurboCache" is a euphemism for "uses some system memory for video".

I'm not saying you don't make an excellent point. The MBP is too pricey for what you get.

Haha that price comparison (2 posts above) is cool. I did the same thing except comparing Dell Inspiron notebook and the high end MB. The Dell had anything comparable (except the 2.0GHz C2D and 2GB 533MHz RAM) to the MB but it costed about $1700 and that included a 4yr warranty (notably poor service I assume) while the MB costed $2400. Then again, Apple's quality may make a difference and I'd still go with Apple than Dell.

Well... maybe. Right now it's more like a REV "A.5" (new logic boards, battery issues fixed, etc.).

A totally new design would be a REV A again!

Please, don't buy a Dell.

Dell laptops smell of plastic. They have flimsy keyboards, they are really (no - I mean REALLY) ugly and I hate their guts.

I got my gf a Latitude Dell about 1.5 years ago, it was the most horrible POS I ever used. I couldn't stand seeing her with it. I bought her the 12" Powerbook instead, and now she's happy. Damn solid build, actually looks pretty - and everything about it just leaves the Dell in the dust.

If these would be cars, the Dell would be some ugly ass overpowered american car - alot of horsepower and runs like a dragster straight on. The MBP ()even with C2D) would be more like a Porsche, beautiful stylish design with superb handling.

I'm a Porsche man myself.

At least the deliverytime in the norwegian store went up from 24 hours to 2 days on two of the three MBP's, that's all the news I see in the store.. Granted, that is the only place I look in the store these days too..
