Work forces me to use a Dell latitude. It's awful. You get what you pay for. Lining up specs is about 5% of the buying/using experience. You're still stuck with a POS for the next 3? years. I would pay more for a comparatively 'lower spec' MBP any day of the week. Because I'd have to live with it and use it, and not just list the specs every day.

True, but as others have pointed out, although the MBP was an excellent value when it was introduced, it is becoming a bit long in the tooth, and it is time for it to be refreshed or reduced in price to reflect the current market. Fortunately, I expect this to occur within the next month.

At least the deliverytime in the norwegian store went up from 24 hours to 2 days on two of the three MBP's, that's all the news I see in the store.. Granted, that is the only place I look in the store these days too..

Same things in the italian online store...

I would love to wait for the C2D's in the MBP, but I desperatly need to order my MBP now for school...

Should I just order a basic system and hope they release the C2D within 14 days?

Seems like a big risk to me...

Posts 542/3 are the only quotes i can find right now in regards to the store being taken down a few days before the iMac update.

I think it was on the morning of the 5th september? iMac released the next day!

Im NOT saying i think it will be 2moro but i do think its close!

1. store down temporarily with no updates
2. End of ipod deal in europe (thus concluding it wordwide)
3. Shipping down to 24hrs as with the iMacs.
4. Lack of stock in every store iv been to, be it highstreet or specialist.
5. Start of Q4/ new FY (whichever it is again)
6. Educational institutions being delayed with bulk orders... (apple would probs lose contracts if they sold an institution products that will be kind of obselete very soon),
7. Im sure there are 100s of other thing pointing in the right direction now but like i have said many times before its all speculation.

Hell someone may actually read this at apple and think, damn they're on to us lets keep them guessing....

..i just dont know anymore.

10/10 fingers crossed!!!

If you can't wait what I recommend you do is buy a refurb instead, non of this 14 day crap please. The 10% restocking fee is just so not worth it for Merom.

This is true, it is approaching 'end of life' for sure (like any piece of technology, it's only the latest and greatest for about 5 minutes nowadays), but although it may not offer the same value as 9 months ago, it isn't a 'rip-off' in my view. It's still a lovely piece of kit that will serve anyone well for years to come.

How much cheaper would it have to be to be 'good value' again? 100, 300, 500 bucks? Or just by sticking a 'merom' in it for the same price? It's a fine line.

9 months is an eon in computer time... considering computers double in speed every 18 months.

Update: Whoa!, some sweet deals on refurbs in the UK save store this morning. They already have a Core 2 Duo 20" iMac there for about £870 as well as a MacPro for about £1450. I personally saw a MacBook Pro for £1234 and its the high end model and comes with a 7200RPM drive and jumped on it.

At least i have 14 days and if nothing happens i won't feel too bad as i got a great machine for a great price.

i sometimes wonder how much of the forum you read!

Again u have missed the point i was making with the quote completely.

I earlier mentioned that there was a 'store down with no update' scenario a day or two before the iMac update. Someone then questioned that this did occur and thus i trawled throught previous threads looking for proof of the 'store down with no update' scenario.

My point was that this happened yesterday and could be a sign of an imminent update somewhere....

...NOT some cr*p about 14 returns policy!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, but it is also the reason that it is pointless to 'wait' for x months to have the latest and greatest. By the time you have the hang of your top-of-the-line model, it would be 'obsolete' and 'suck' to many tech-ambulance chasers. Unless money is no object, somewhere along the line you have to look at the functionality it provides you rather than the specification bragging rights it offers.

About the doubling in speed thing: I'm not convinced that the multiplication of cores really offers this. For most people doing most jobs (except MR's own 'multimedia' of course), the increase in real world speed is far less than 100%. Again, theory and practice couldn't be more different.

man i'm so tired of reading but i can't stop. It takes so much out of my day. Thinking about my future merom macbook pro never leaves my mind.

I think I know why the store went down...

The people that were reporting broken links yesterday, if they were on the UK sites too, then they have been fixed http://www.apple.com/uk/macbookpro/intelcoreduo.html goes to a page now..., its still broke on the states site, you click on the large core duo logo on the page to recreate.

If they were working before then its jsut the US site that has all broken links over it....:D

Well first of all it's not even part of the store. So that evidently isn't why. It's just an info page. Why do you think the store would go down if the link wasn't in the store? And also why wouldn't the US update as well because we have the same problem?

On the other hand, who thinks its time for a front page redesign with a macbook pro instead of ipods? well maybe ipods in one of the little squares.

theres also one thing i'd like to point out that i noticed that the uk site differs from the us site. The link on the UK site is where it should be (on the tech specs page), so it would go in order to start with the first page on the macbook pro. On the US site, it's on the wireless page skipping the tech specs link.

Just thought i'd point that out, it probably has nothing to do with a tuesday release of the macbook pros

What are you all on about?

The UK site is showing 24hrs for shipping on the 17"mpb
There is no reason why anything should happen! You are all bored and wanton!

while I think it's unlikely

to happen this weekend/monday

i did notice that the STUDENT OFFER where you get to save €160 euro on an ipod by buying a Mac is ending tomorrow on the Irish apple store. That's previously been a point for a refresh happening here.

I just talked to my friend, that works in an Apple store. He said that an Apple employee had been to the store yesterday, and although he couldn't give any official information, he slipped that "somethinng will happen" to the MBP in november.

The same store also has alot of MBP's in stock, which would not be the case if they were due for an update in a week or two.

ok please

Please stop this madness.
'something will happen to the MBP'
I'm sure it will. They will probably sell some.

Thats all. I really doubt some bloke in a store knows the marketing strategy of Apple...

An Apple employee came to an Apple store!? My god, that's so weird. I take it Apple stores are usually staffed by McDonald's employees?

I am pretty sure he was referring to one of the execs from Cupertino, you know the ones who dress up in black turtlenecks and wear shades?

This late in the game, that SOMETHING better be good.

No one knows

Why dont you get it.. There's not an international consipiracy about Meroms.. there's a handful of people who know about the release strategy.. guaranteed that they are signed to NDA policies.. and there is no way that a bloke in a store knows the timing of new products... do you not think that it would have surfaced online SOMEWHERE?

forget waiting.. just be happy!

Yeah, and from what I've heard, there is a ;) ;) super high battery time ;) ;) on an AlienWare laptop...I mean, you might as well just buy a desktop.

I know I know this perpetual quest for 'the next macbook pro update' is a pain, my only thing is I'm ABOUT to pull the trigger on about 6/7 macs, one of which will be an powerbook upgrade to macbook pro and I've had that "it's about to be updated feeling" since august.

well.. we've just ordered...

1 x Apple Mac Pro 2 x Dual Core 3Ghz Processors + 4GB Non ECC SDRAM + Apple Cinema HD Display 30

2 x Apple iMac 20” 2GHz + 2GB memory

2 x Apple Macbook Pro 17” + 2GB memory (includes 100GB 7200rpm internal drive)

but we are thinking also we may hold bck a few weeks on the MBP's
