im really hoping for a removable 160GB HDD when i get my 17" MBP

I would like 2 but that will never happen but i think they will put a 160gb in even if it's a BTO options, why should the Mac Mini have one and not the MBP

It is suprizing how Apple is lagging behind is offering the 160GB drives in the MBP's. My Seagate 5400.3 perpendicular drive breathed new life in my old 1.25GHz PB, it's great. I suppose it's performance is almost a wash with the 7200rpm drives - actually that is what I've read. But still, 160GB internal on a laptop rocks! Especially since this is my main machine.

I think it's too long: more suitable are MacBook Mini or Macbook Nano

that is quite a mouthful why not Macbook Pro mini, nano, OR Ultraslim which the last one is a little iffy in itself
EDIT: ~darn famusc beat me to it :(
EDIT 2: I hope this thread dies before 2,500 posts.

PC Perspective Editor's Choice Award Test Shows Release 2.33GHz Merom Runs Cooler

twoodcc said:
from what i've read, it's about the same. i haven't read anything about being cooler
It's Cooler. Pre-release engineering samples were hotter. The finished product is cooler.

PC Perspective Editor's Choice Award:

"So in the end, we're giving this CPU an Editor's Choice Award. The latest Core 2 Duo mobile CPU is cooler, faster, and runs longer than the older Core Duo. Not only that, it has technology improvements under the hood like a larger level 2 cache (4MB) and 64-bit extensions to support 64-bit OSes like the upcoming Windows Vista. If you've had reservations before about getting a laptop, the Core 2 Duo should have you convinced. Intel's track record in this arena is strong, and their latest CPU just solidifies their lead."

I just noticed they decreased the 2.33 GHz option price for iMacs from $250 to $225. It could be good if they put same option for MacBooks.

I don't think so: since you buy your computer through the ADC Store, it is part of the ADC material and so without warranty.

No, items purchased through the ADC Store have their own warranty, it's all posted there online, go read it. The no warranty paragraph in the ADC subscription agreement is for ADC subscription materials only. Additionally, you can buy standard AppleCare plans for any products you buy through ADC as well. ....I've bought through ADC before, I know what you get.

I Think 2.33GHz Merom Will Be Standard In Toop 15" & 17" MacBook Pros

I believe 2.33GHz Merom will be standard on top 15" & 17" MacBook Pros not an option.

That's why they pay Apple Engineers the big bucks. Don't worry. They have to do it. It's not like they have a choice to leave the HD inaccessable. If they do, I will vote with my wallet and buy a C2D MacBook. No way are they going to convince me the HD Bay is not possible on the MBP.

It's completely possible and having taken my MBP apart to swap out the HDD (oh what fun that was... ), I can see more than one way it would work just fine. In fact, I think they paid the engineers the big bucks to NOT include it in the original design.

How Did You Get A 160 Inside An Aluminum 1.25GHz PB?

I have that model. But how did you get it in there? Isn't it like 50 micro screws easily stripped?

How much did you pay for the 160 from where?

What spec would your Macbook Pro have? (Be realistic)

Mine would be:
2.33Ghz Core 2 Duo
1Gb Ram
160Gb 5400RPM HDD
256mb Graphics
17" 1920x1200 screen

(Removable HDD, Mag Latch)
£1849 in UK ($2699 in US)

1) The tests were conducted using Mobile Mark 2005. Mobile Mark 2005 mimics a typical office environment complete with application switching, pauses, and dialog boxes. This kind of work load is light on the system

2) This is VERY different from what I stated in my post. I mentioned 3D gaming and/or heavy conversion activities for extended periods of time. So in other words...sustained CPU load for extended periods of time. Intel has even stated that the TPW was higher on the C2D vs the CD. So, the laws of physics dictates that CPU to CPU, in sustained loads, the C2D will run hotter than CD. It's science. The test results show that in 3 out of 4 tests, the C2D runs higher watts. I don't believe that the system can run cooler given higher wattage at sustained loads. It goes against the laws of science. e.g., how long did they run the cpu load tests for? etc. These go unanswered in their tests.

3) What you find important may be different from what I find important. To me, its thermal design balanced with flexibility. You might want CPU performance. So, in my book, the C2D alone is not worth the upgrade and given a choice, I'd probably stick with CD for now. Now, if the C2D came with some other goodies, such as the items I mentioned, even at the sacrifice of notebook "thickness", I would take it. Again, you may not.

I installed the drive myself. It was not too bad openning up the PB, but then again, I like that kind of thing. The worst was getting the clips to release through the superdrive slot - I gouged up my aluminum a bit - oh well, it's 3.5 years old anyway. I had no problems with stripping screws. [That sounds kinda bad...]

Let's see, I bought it from NewEgg and paid $210 and that was 2-3 months ago. I just looked it up and the price is now 179 - nice!!!

C'mon Apple, make that a BTO option already! I'd pay a premium (not too much) to have them install it for me.

Socketed Core 2 Duo - Upgradable
1GB RAM (Single DIMM)
120GB HDD - User swappable
256MB Graphics on ATI Mobile Radeon 1700
15.4" 1440x900 (This resolution is really fine by me)
Magnetic Latch
Better thermal design such that it can again be called a "laptop" and not just a "notebook". lol.

If the above requires a 0.1-0.2cm increase in thickness, so be it.

Say what? Clips to release? Please explain further.

But not if the MBP has the HD Bay most of us want. :D

Here's hoping Wednesday will be the day if not tomorrow. That canceled order is very encouraging news.

Come on Apple. Get your Merom Mojo In Gear!

Yep. All the serious stress benchmarks I've seen show Merom to run hotter and these are production chips/systems, not pre-release samples. At idle and light load, Merom is a bit cooler. But under full load for sustained periods, it can be a good 15% hotter as reported by Anandtech and GamePC. Anandtech had 3DS MAX preview and render benchmarks which give a good indication of what I can expect for my work.

...not that it all matters right now anyway. I'm sure we'll be disappointed and left wanting again this week.

lets hpoe this happens soon, even most cheaper laptops have C2D already, apple is falling behind.

An HD bay akin to the MB would be so awesome, and I'm sure that a future rev of the MBP will have this. Here's to hoping for this week!!!

To get the drive on a PB, you need to lift up the keyboard. There are screws on the back and side and bottom to release most of it. There are three latches that you need to release which you access throught the openning of the cd/dvd drive. Unless you have done a couple of these before, it's kinda like fishing in the dark to find them.

Here are the instructions that I used: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/PB_G4_15_AL_takeapart/AL_PB_G4_take-apart.html

Cheers!

Well, I reached 1500 posts before the 2nd revision of the MacBook Pro, this being my 1502nd post.

Hot damn I hope for tomorrow...:D

Count me in as someone who doesn't care about changes to the HD bay. Also, it doesn't look terribly difficult to replace yourself in the current design anyways.

Apple is as secretive as they are so that they are not pressured to release new products before those products are absolutely perfect. Those other companies don't take that much pride in their products.

Well then Apple had to redesign the ventilation system for C2D which could explain the delay in release. Thanks for setting me straight. Couldn't you guys provide links like I did to the articles showwing it hotter?

Yeah, I've changed many a HD myself...at least in prior powerbook models. My hang up though is that I have heard (on this forum) that doing so voids the warranty, which I don't want to do. So I'm all for a new, easy-access HDD.
