One of my buddies who works at an authorized reseller said that the price of the current rev. will drop until Apple stops shipping them. There's also the option of a refurb. Those are basically like new, just a brown box.

Good to know. Any idea on what the price drop usually bottoms to? I had no problem going with the 1.83 MBP as the power isn't incredibly important to me. I want the bigger screen and feel of the MBP over the MB. How reliable are refurbs and where do I go for those? Warranty still the same? Is the extended apple warranty (applecare right?) worth the money?

Thanks!

While we're all just waiting . . .

I thought I'd just ask about the history and meaning of this Tuesday release that I constantly read about in the forums. Has Apple always released products on Tuesdays? Is there some sort of significance to the day? What up with that? Someone indulge me . . .

I mean...I'm here too. But seriously, this thread just repeats itself over and over. I've stopped bothering to post really, cause' it's all been said, but I couldn't help myself here.

Today is Columbus day which is largely UN-observed by most companies. Labor day is widely observed. Columbus day is pretty much just banks, government, schools, etc that shut down. I mean seriously, it's like Saint Patty's day. I observe it, but I doubt it would ever delay the release of something Apple makes.

I called my supplier today (and he was open, despite it being Columbus day) and he acted peculiar. "Call me back tomorrow." Here's to hoping. I leave for Bangalore in four weeks.

Today is a national holiday which normally leads to a one day delay in the new release - like the iMacs came out Wednesday after Labor Day.

A lot of banks and schools don't even close.

A lot of people, myself included, forget these kind of holidays until we can't figure out why we didn't get mail.

Mac vs. PC ads

Anybody else find this interesting? Apple has posted new versions of their Mac vs. PC ads on the apple front page, but just down on the bottom. It seems like previously when they've added these ads, they always occupied the large space in the middle. Maybe they're reserving that space (now occupied by iTunes 7, iPod nano, etc. all a bit old) for something else this week.

They probably realized that these ads taking up so much space wasn't actually helping them sell anything.

But then there'd be no difference between MB and MBP!

The problem is that Apple doesn't have a cheap range of laptops and an expensive range of laptops, they simply have ONE SINGLE range of laptops.

I don't see why they don't have an uber-pro 12 or 13", AND cheap 15 and 17" laptops.

The problem with this is that (as I'm sure has been mentioned before) most cheaper laptops below the $800 dollar mark tend to be disposable. Having had friends who have purchased these, they ended up being nothing but trouble, ussually resulting in repairs or unstable OS environments. True, quality has been improving, but I find that the sheer number of people at my university that purchase macbooks etc. each year suggests that the price isn't so terribly unaffordable.

As well, what specifically constitutes cheap? What is going to have to drop out of the laptop in order for it to reach that price, and what is the resultant lifespan of that computer? Part of the reason PC's tend to have to be upgraded so often (aside from sheer desire) is that people like to buy on the cheap, meaning components either give out, or they are shortchanged functionality that prevents them from doing things that they find they actually "need" to do for work or school. There is always a balance (buying a G80 for $800 when it comes out is probably not under the "wise" category), but I think that Mac's often reach that balance fairly well, as shown by the fact that the old specs of the 12" ibook still allow for faily good function and usage even today. Dell's from that far back are already at recycling plants by now :p .

i think apple should vary their laptops a bit

Macbook nano = £400 - £700 (10" - 13", budget core duo)
Macbook = £700 - £1200 (10" - 13", low end core 2 duo)
Macbook Pro = £1200 - £2000 (13" - 17", high end core 2 duo)

They drove me insane. I am using a fairly old computer right now, and when I went to Apple.com it would freeze my computer for a minute or two while quciktime loaded the movie.

At 10" the macbook would have to be made of copper and come with a complimentary box fan for heat dissipation...

hmmm

I could do without the box fan, but a nice shiny copper one might be nice. I think I still prefer my dream of carbon-fiber over a magnesium or titanium skeleton..

Wait 'Til Spring 2007 For Better Intel Graphics

I just want a macbook with a decnet video card. These intel graphics have got to go.
You'll have to wait until next Spring then cause that's when the next gen Intel Integrated Graphics chipset kicks in. No way will Apple be puttin' in a dedicated graphics card or chip.

Carbon fibre is the mbp of my dreams :) I'll settle for black anodized aluminium though. Well, actually, I'll most likely settle for the plain Aluminium that it'll come in.

EVERYBODY
What spec would your Macbook Pro have? (Be realistic)

What I would like to order as soon as possible:

15" model
2.33ghz Core 2 Duo
2gb RAM
160gb 5400rpm HDD (if it's a fast one; otherwise the biggest 7200rpm HDD)
Fastest gfx-card Apple will offer (I hope it's better than the current underclocked x1600 since I depend on a fast gfx card)
Removable HDD would be nice

I'm still hoping for a 1680x1050 screen option (I had that resolution before in a 15" pc-notebook and can't imaging going a step back; 17" is a no-go)

Price: I hope it's not higher than around 2500eur including student discounts and AppleCare

15" MBP

2.33GHz
2GB
160 5400 RPM or 100GB 7200RPM
Magnetic latch
ATI X1700
Glossy screen
Dual Layer 8x DVD burner or 16x if available
Quiet and Cool

Its not too much to ask is it?

Dude, thats exactly what I was thinking.

If MBPs come out tomorrow...

or ever again, I was wondering...
What am I doing to do with all this time I normally reserve for browsing these rumor sites? I'm going to have so much more free time on my hands once I actually get this thing it's ridiculous!

You'll be reading the "which bag/sleeve should I buy?" threads :D ;)

You can browse the other threads in this amazing forum. Problem being about "rumour sites" is that there havn't been any descent bloody rumours in about 20 days other than "Macbook Pro Core-2-duo released between sometimes now and Q2 2007"...at least i've had the forums and reading them to compensate.
