Other things to watch for on ebay...
If the seller requests you mail them about a "buy it now" price before you bid, it's probably a scam. If the seller has a 1000+ rating from buying and selling beanie babies and is suddenly selling a brand new MBP, the account has probably been hijacked and it's a scam. On any high-ticket item, always communicate with the seller before bidding and verify that you will get warranty, etc.. For Apple products, request the serial number. That way you can check warranty elligibility and whether or not the seller is legit. If they refuse to provide the serial number, they are either running a scam or they're just plain stupid. Either way, don't buy from them. I can tell you that right now most of the Macbook[Pro] systems on ebay are either a scam or if they're legit, you're only saving $30 over a refurb unit (in many cases paying more than a refurb from Apple) and you have the headache of dealing with ebay. IMO, it's not worth it to buy something like a Macbook off ebay. And I've bought and sold a lot of stuff on ebay... I don't mind selling my used computers/notebooks there (I'm listing one later today in fact), but I personally would never buy one there. When I pay $1K or more for a notebook, I expect it to run properly so I can be productive. When you're buying something like that on ebay, you have to remember that someone else is selling it for a reason. 90% of the time the new in box macbook[pro] systems are: A) Stolen. B) Don't exist - it's a scam. or C) Some kid is selling because they don't want it and don't want to hurt mom and dad's feelings by telling them he doesn't want his graduation present. Sadly, most fall into A and B categories. Because if it truly is new in the box, why not just return it to Apple for a full refund? Legit, authorized dealers don't sell these systems on ebay.
OK, enough of that... My MBP that I bought nearly 3 weeks ago was a refurb unit. It arrived in perfect condition and I've been very happy with it. Overall it was a great deal. I put in 2GB and went through the hell of swapping the hard drive and it's great. Prices on refurbished units will drop as will prices on new core duo overstock systems once the C2D models are released. However, it's difficult to say when this will happen (we don't even know when we'll see the C2D models). And it will take a little time for refurbished C2D models to show up after that. Refurb C2D models will probably be about 15% off of new MSRP like the current refurb models are. The current models will be discounted just enough to entice you away from a C2D one, but not enough to make it a better deal.
