Above all, make sure the seller rating is very high when you are buying a high-dollar item. Also, check their history out. Some sellers have high ratings but they have not sold much, just bought a lot of small items. See how many high-dollar items they sold. If they have not sold anything in the last "I think" six months (item number greyed out), I would be very cautious.

Thanks for the tips! How about refurbs guys? When is the best time to buy and how low do they typically drop the price? Thanks!

Next Tuesday?

Who's betting on next Tuesday?

I feel pretty good about next Tuesday. I think Apple couldn't possbily wait until Thanksgiving to add CD2's it's pro laptops when the iMacs already have them. They would look like laggards.

Apple is irritating.

Ugh. This isn't fun anymore. It's irritating.

I'm ordering my new macbook pro now. If there's a redesign next week, so be it. At least I'll have my new MBP.

Other things to watch for on ebay...

If the seller requests you mail them about a "buy it now" price before you bid, it's probably a scam. If the seller has a 1000+ rating from buying and selling beanie babies and is suddenly selling a brand new MBP, the account has probably been hijacked and it's a scam. On any high-ticket item, always communicate with the seller before bidding and verify that you will get warranty, etc.. For Apple products, request the serial number. That way you can check warranty elligibility and whether or not the seller is legit. If they refuse to provide the serial number, they are either running a scam or they're just plain stupid. Either way, don't buy from them. I can tell you that right now most of the Macbook[Pro] systems on ebay are either a scam or if they're legit, you're only saving $30 over a refurb unit (in many cases paying more than a refurb from Apple) and you have the headache of dealing with ebay. IMO, it's not worth it to buy something like a Macbook off ebay. And I've bought and sold a lot of stuff on ebay... I don't mind selling my used computers/notebooks there (I'm listing one later today in fact), but I personally would never buy one there. When I pay $1K or more for a notebook, I expect it to run properly so I can be productive. When you're buying something like that on ebay, you have to remember that someone else is selling it for a reason. 90% of the time the new in box macbook[pro] systems are: A) Stolen. B) Don't exist - it's a scam. or C) Some kid is selling because they don't want it and don't want to hurt mom and dad's feelings by telling them he doesn't want his graduation present. Sadly, most fall into A and B categories. Because if it truly is new in the box, why not just return it to Apple for a full refund? Legit, authorized dealers don't sell these systems on ebay.

OK, enough of that... My MBP that I bought nearly 3 weeks ago was a refurb unit. It arrived in perfect condition and I've been very happy with it. Overall it was a great deal. I put in 2GB and went through the hell of swapping the hard drive and it's great. Prices on refurbished units will drop as will prices on new core duo overstock systems once the C2D models are released. However, it's difficult to say when this will happen (we don't even know when we'll see the C2D models). And it will take a little time for refurbished C2D models to show up after that. Refurb C2D models will probably be about 15% off of new MSRP like the current refurb models are. The current models will be discounted just enough to entice you away from a C2D one, but not enough to make it a better deal.

It's 9:07AM Cupertino time... Doesn't look like anything new today...

Well, there's always tomorrow... Or NEXT TUESDAY. :D

Thank you for the info, that does really help. I know the scams you are talking about and I've been avoiding those. Some claim it was a present and most are willing to provide a serial number. Earlier I posted that there was previously a deal on amazon.com on the 1.83gigahertz MBP when it was discontinued that brought it down to 1500 after rebate. I missed out on that one which is too bad because ideally that is how much I would like to spend and I am wondering if we will see a deal like that again when the new MBPs are out? Or if the current line MBPs are dropped in price lets say 15% will those refurbs be down another 15% from that? If so it would drop it into my 1500 price range, just enough for me to spend the extra cash to get a MBP and not a new MB.

Again, thanks for everyone's help I do really appreciate it. I'm used to building my own PCs and not dealing with this proccess.

i am certian we will see something this month. if shuffle and xserve/raid are going to quiet releases then this presents a good opportunity for the fabled Pro core 2 to emerge. if we do not see it in oct them we will not see merom in mbp, we will see santarosa. then again if all three launch at same time there wont be any room for apature 1.5 and the mac ads on the welcome page. pro core 2 is the new ipod mini.... i mean nano. just a place holder.

October 24?

So no c2d mbp's today. I too am sad.

I think they wont be released until October 24, Oct 31 at the latest. This is because the isight will start shipping by then (better version possibly) and i dont think Apple wants to release a c2d mbp with an old version isight. when they could wait a couple weeks and have the mbp come out with the latest isight.

Just a thought. Sorry if for the grammer or lack of sense, i'm sick and am having trouble forming sentences.

Also, for californians who dont want to wait for the new c2d mbp - try looking for new mbp on pricegrabber.com. I found a 17" mbp for 20 dollars more than the refurbished 17" mbp on the apple site - and this is with next day air delivery. The prices are so low because the seller is out of state and you dont have to pay taxes. (well you will have to pay the tax in april when you - as an honest citizen - tell the state that you bought something online and out of state. ;) ;) nudge nudge )

For the $1500 price range, have you considered a 2GHz Macbook and then dropping in 2GB and a 100~120GB HD? I understand if you want to go MBP (bigger screen, dedicated GPU and video memory, expresscard slot), but the Macbook is a pretty good deal in that price range, even compared to current PC offerings.

As for Apple and their pricing, I would guess that they will discount current MBP models about 10% cheaper than the new C2D models when they arrive. Current refurb model prices won't change until C2D refurbs show up and I bet the current model refurbs will only be about 5% cheaper than C2D refurbs.

Of course, I'm just guessing, but Apple will sell them all in due time at such prices and don't expect huge discounts. Apple has never been and probably won't ever be recognized for huge discounts and I think they will gladly pull product from the market before they sell it at a huge discount and detract from their current products.

My thinking is that I would rather spend only 1k on a macbook if I were to go that route. I like the larger screen and aluminum casing of the MB as well as the option to do some graphics (editing and such) in the future even though I have no need for that right now. Thanks for your estimates though, that definently helps. I guess I'll just be on the lookout and/or wait for the new ones to come out and see what happens.

Good point. I found one with a 15" screen for 1770 all told. And as loyal and honest californian I don't have to pay my tax on it till April. That's better than a refurb!

I had to give up waiting. I ordered a MacBook (not Pro) and it is scheduled to arrive before the 17th.

If Apple release a new MBP with no changes other than the chip swap then I'll probably keep the MB, as I don't think Merom alone is a big change, and since I have an iMac at home I can live with integrated graphics for a while.

Totally sucks to be in this situation.

In the chances that tomorrow may see the updates im waiting til then, if not im buying it before leaving college!

The only reason i have waited is that i dont wanna buy something taht will be superseeded in less than a month or two.... its a lot of money to part with!

The current spec are more than enough for me, but being a student £1800 is a lot of cash to part with for older components!

When it comes to Apple's product roadmap, to say there's an enormous amount of buzz and milling of rumors is a ridiculous understatement. Believe it or not we tend to have to disregard the majority of rumors floating around (or that get sent in to us); that said, when not only one, but multiple trusted sources get in touch to let us know Steve Jobs & Co. are supposedly finally about completed with the wireless / video iPod, we have to take note. Supposedly they're preparing to announce the device in the very near future, which we've been told is both wireless and widescreen (both features we've been waiting for the iPod to take on, since, well, forever) -- you didn't think last month's new nano / new shuffle / iTV event was going to be it for the rest of the year, did you? We'll keep you posted.
Could this be the hold up? After all, nothing stops Apple from sending out another unexpected press invite to reveal a whole new slew of products (including MBP refresh), and this one more thing... Link

Zune is due Nov. 14. Apple may time its event to steal Microsoft's thunder.

Congrats on the 100th. I just recently got there myself. Do you know what the next threashold is?

Bummer on no new MBP's today. They are going to rock whenever the arrive. :) [just adding relavence to the thread]

apple is waiting for zune. then they will release , shuffle, xserve/raid, mb 8.5 x 11, the fabled Mbp core 2 and isound portable wireless speaker set. apple is going to be all that under the tree this year.

The new MB and MBP's should be coming very soon as I have not seen one person post that they have gotten a machine that was built after week 38.

3 Options that I can see happened.

1. They stopped production for awhile to fix reported problems.
2. They stopped production to update the MB and the MBP.
3. Production was moved to a different facility (Foxconn) etc..

I don't think that fixing some of the problems associated with the MB/MBP would hold up production for such a long period of time, so option 2 or 3 seem more likely to me.

i think it's 500 when my avatar will be avaiable. iff i have ~400 poste to go, and 500th could come on a tuesday, then that means.. Mbp core 2 on tuesday

I don't think Apple is going to give Zune a second thought.

The Zune is it's own worst enemy. MS promised so much and is delivering so little..crippled WIFI sharing capability/downloading music, video player deficits.

This current week is only week 40, so there has at most been 2 weeks since week 38 and now. Possibly less, since a machine made only 8 days ago could potentially appear as a machine from 2 weeks ago.
