Full Laptop Refresh By Holidays?

what angers me about the mmbp or lack there of is that apple gives no hints as to when they are going to be released. If the had said back in august that they will be upgraded at the end of october to end of november i would have purchased a laptop on that day, but becuase i had no knowledge i kept convincing myself every monday night that it would be coming out the proceeding tuesday. Plus all of the events in september and the end of the free ipod made me think for sure that it was coming out then but i was sadly mistaken. Now i am in the same boat that i was back in august thinking that it will come out within the next 2 weeks and not purchasing it for the prior reason. Now half of the semester is over and i have been struggling without a laptop. Apple this is one place where you should take your cues from dell😱 and anounce a product way in advance so you consumer i.e students who need it can make an informed decision.

Apple has released new products at foreign events before, so it wouldn't be unthinkable. Actually, I think next week holds a lot of promise, namely next wednesday 10/25. Why?

1. All current mail-in rebates and promotions on MB/MBP systems here in the USA end 10/24.

2. MacExpo London starts 10/26. People were expecting MBP announcments the day before Photokina in Germany, why not before this event?

3. Adobe's MAX Expo is in Vegas 10/23 thru 10/26 and they will be showing off all the upcoming universal binary versions of Photoshop, InDesign, etc...

4. Because it's about frickin' time! ...OK?

MacBook looks good to me, screw the wait

Well, I'm taking the plunge. I've decided to screw waiting any longer, and go ahead and order a refurbished 2GHz MacBook. With the price cut, it makes it considerably more affordable, and I've got a 100g 7200rpm Seagate SATA drive waiting, along with 2 gigs of Hynix ram ready for it when it arrives.

It'll be a sweet machine, regardless of when Apple decides to drop the C2D's, and I can't justify waiting any longer. I need it sooner rather than later, and the waiting game is insane. I agree with a previous post that Apple should hint at target dates at least to give prospective buyers the choice to buy now or wait- they lose some sales as a result I would imagine, but of course- nothing that they're worried about as they are selling Macs more than ever before.

I'll post here and drop a word about it when it arrives.

Found this picture on a Chinese (www.macforchina.ch) website, it shows the BRAND-NEW MacBookPro ...

Maybe it's just a pre-production unit, but it sure looks interesting!

I love the beige plastic case! Reminiscient of the old Mac Classic II's!!! 🙂

It's partly that elitist Apple attitude ("you don't need cutting edge computer power - be satisfied with what we're offering!") that's awarded Apple its 4% market share. And now that its computer components are the same as their PC competition, they'd damned well better keep up! They can no longer blame Moto or IBM for not providing cutting edge chips - Intel's selling them, and every other laptop maker is using them. "Last-gen" may be "good enough" for you, but that type of thinking will ensure a niche market for Macs.

That is precisely the reason why manufacturers and retailers alike prefer to work down inventory before new product launches.

And Apple has had no less time to plan and engineer for C2D than any other PC maker. Mac FanBoys need to stop making this excuse for Apple, that it was somehow a bigger/harder job for Apple to transition from CD to C2D. BS.

Apple's strategy is all about lowering the barriers to switching, while conditioning its current and future customers not to treat its products like commodities.

Being the only laptop maker to not offer C2D is one damned big barrier. And pricing "last-gen" CD units the same as they were 6-9 months ago, including their "MacBookPro" is laughable.

Seriously guys, it's stuff like that that is just funny. I take myself a little too seriously about the infamous Merom Macbook Pro.
 
That's why I posted that insane picture -- I, like many of us on this forum, have been taking this MBP/merom thing WAAAAY too seriously.

We should re-name this thread "the MBP Obsessive-Compulsive Support Group"!

The first rule of Merom... is you do not talk about Merom.
The second rule is... you do NOT TALK about Merom.

This is it. We're doomed to read and read everyday - for the rest of our life - this long forum...hoping for a new day, another Tuesday, a better tomorrow.

Apple gave up on us. No more laptops. They're too hot anyway and they shut down all the time. Apple is now only focussing on ipods. That's where the money is. Ipods with dots, or zebra ipods...so many possibilities.

Tuesday is almost over. Now let's get ready to wait for next Tuesday.

but with that aside.. what is the largest portable hd availiable on the market now? i saw a 120gb on newegg:

pretty cheap for a good name brand... should i buy one of these and hold it til the macbooks come? its not like they will be going in a different direction with HD's right?

PS: don't know why im already looking to beef up my macbook considering i don't own one yet and dont know when i will own one
 
Don't buy anything until it exists...

Unless you find a REALLY great deal on 667MHz RAM or something, which actually may fluctuate in price.

That would be this Toshiba Drive: 200GB SATA 2.5''

BUT, it's a 4200 rpm drive...
 
MCE OptiBay Hard Drive replaces your internal SuperDrive or Combo drive

What do you all think about this concept. I sure would get alot more use out of this than the SuperDrive.

If it is more suitable to your usage, then it makes sense. Regardless of what occupies the space, you will likely find need for an external drive. External DVD/CDROMs are easier and cheaper externally than hard drives.

This is what is what I think is great:

What you could do is buy an iPod, and carry it around as an external HDD. Since the 80gb iPod is basically a steal for AUD$500, you could easily use it for some not so serious data storage, and listening to music of course. How about a 160gb iPod Video?

Also, if you look up the optibay (http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/) it gives the average read times for their HDD's, look at the 160gb version, it's like 25% slower than the 120gb, even at the same spindle speed, what gives?

Seriously, I reckon the new 17" could do with a second internal HDD 😀. Among other things, but most importantly, a ship date.
