Still slow when it comes to updates but rooting is fairly simple. You can check out the xda Verizon Note 3 forum for rooting procedures.

Thanks for the info, I hated how long it took them to updated my Droid back in the day and when they did, it was incredibly buggy, and I had to wait months for a bug fix. If I opt for a Note 3, I'll go the custom rom route I think.

I'm on the fence for two reasons however
1. I'm mid cycle, the Note 4 (and iPhone 6) are due out this fall (unless Apple releases the iPhone 6 at WWDC). Do I go the VZW Edge route just to get the Note 3 now or wait

2. iPhone 6 may offer a larger form factor, which makes my life harder, i.e., which platform to embrace. Both Android and iOS have the pros/cons.

One thing to add about rooting. The boot loader is still locked. It is fairly easy to root. But flashing roms is not as easy as before. You have to use a process/software called safestrap. Then you are limited to some form of stock rom because of the locked boot loader and kernel restrictions. So no ASOP roms.

And, be careful of tripping the Knox counter. If you do it's irreversible and voids your warranty. There are ways to root without tripping that, I think Kango is one of the most popular.

Thanks for the info on both counts. It looks like its a bit trickier then before but still doable.

Has anyone else really seen their Note 3 battery lose some of its luster currently?

In looking at my battery release, it has almost 40-50% drained by "Android OS" every single day.

I am at 83% since unplugging from charger at 7am this morning. Not absolutely terrible but I havent used my phone at all today text, internet, or anything else really.

Maybe I am imagining things.

Do you ever let it go all the way dead? Do you charge all night? Also, did you update a lot of system apps lately?

i do not let it go all the way dead.

i do charge it all night when i go to bed and leave it plugged in.
no to your other question about system apps.

its very weird how all of a sudden it has gotten progressively worse.

I was having some similar drain on my s4 running 4.4.2. Have since started using a galaxy note 2 on 4.3 and the android os drain is a lot less, at around 10% with all the same apps and settings. Something weird going on with KitKat I think.

Mine does this too, I haven't figured it out yet. I've been meaning to root and freeze/uninstall all the Samsung crap, but was waiting for 4.4.2 to land first. My use is very similar, with the phone just sitting in my pocket and unused (and with a good ATT signal) from when I unplug it at 7am to about noontime I'll be around 85%, by the end of the day I'll be at 60% or so.

edit: With 4.4.2 I am seeing improvement, at least for today which is the first full day I'm on kitkat. Unplugged at 7am, just sat in my pocket all day and at 3:30pm I'm at 92%, so hopefully the update fixed something.

Kit Kat just came out for ATT today so i downloaded and hope it helps going forward.

its just odd that out of nowhere the awesome battery life changes with no regard to why as i havent downloaded any new apps or changed my usage from before.

hopefully we are on the right track with the update though

Do any of you have non samsung s view cases? Any issues with AT&T kit kat? Debating whether to update or not.

Battery is MUCH better on the update, I'm very happy with it now. I haven't even disabled the Samsung stuff yet. Anyone know if a Root has been released yet for 4.4.2?

I do not use any of the view cases and so far spinedoc is correct. The battery seems to be back to its awesome self after the 4.4 update which is great.

I am not really noticing much difference visually.

If you are referring to issues with Sview no longer showing than that is a no for mine. I tested it on Friday evening to see if it still worked or not after reading about other users stopping with the last pre Kit Kat update. The case drives me crazy since you can't fold around with out activating Sview so I don't leave it on anymore. I don't remember who made it but it was from Amazon.

Battery life on Kit Kat was a drainer the first day or so after upgrade but since has seemed to settle back out. Unplugged at 7:30am and down to 86% with around 52 min on screen time. Android System only accounts for 1.8% so far today. For my use of Messaging, Browsing, Email, twitter feeds, and FB thing seem to be about the same as JB if not slightly better.

Mine is also MUCH smoother, but it may be because I replaced Touchwiz with the Google Now launcher a few days before the 4.4.2 update.

Does this look normal with 2 Android operating systems? My battery is on the fritz again after being fine for 2 days. No new apps downloaded or settings changed.

Already at 88% and I've only had it off the charger for 2 hours with a little Google music.

Been off the charger for 2 hours, 15 minutes of screen on time. No music etc.

That looks pretty high usage to be honest - I've been listening to music over bluetooth (and pinning it) since I took my phone off charge. Also, I'm in a very poor signal area which impacts battery life and, as you can see from the screenshot, I've also been getting e-mail and ChatOn messages and have a Galaxy Gear linked to my phone.
Even after all that, I've got 93% left after nearly 2 hours so there definitely seems to be something draining your battery!

2 hours screen time and still at 91%? I would be at 50% ish with over 2 hours screen time

really? I can watch a full 2hr movie and not drop much at all. In fact several weeks ago I found out I really didn't need a huge battery back up for my 9.5hr airplane ride.

Well let's put it this way if I'm at home on wifi like yesterday I got

5 hours screen time
1 day, 17 hours total

Normally thought my screen time I get on average between 4-5 hours.. But it's normally in the 4 hour range

I always get a full 1 day battery without fail though

Any idea where I can start to look? Its pretty frustrating how the battery seems to do this every now and again even though nothing has changed on the phone in terms of new apps or anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

You aren't alone my android system uses over 20% pretty much all the time

Android OS

Currently mine on 88% left

Android system using 22%
Android os 11%
Screen 27%

1 hour screen time
5 hours total

Sucks to see the battery suffering on this beast considering it is the biggest selling point for me in this device.

Really sucks not to know why and adjust accordingly.
