First of all new galaxy is very good looking phone. However, the curved screen on galaxy S8 is horrible. Looking or especially reading a web page is as awkward as it can get. I truly hope Apple doesn't do curved screen!

Smartlock is no good though; the device will remain unlocked even when you want it to be locked just because the trusted device is in range. When I get up from my desk at work and go to the printer room, my smartwatch will still be in range, but I very much want my phone on my desk to be locked and secure.

Then don't use it. When I'm in my office my phone is fine nobody is going to mess with it, obviously YMMV.

I wish they would be more honest with the screen sizes when comparing to other 16:9 phones. If you prefer the iphones, or other android phones screen aspect ratio then the s8/s8+ are not truly 5.8/6.2". I do think the s8/s8+ are absolutely stunning, but having handled them I feel as if I lose functionality because of the aspect ratio. I know many might not agree with me, but I'd also say they should be measured where the screen begins to curve, as I find the curved edge to be less functionally useful.

Still, it's a sweet phone and definitely cutting edge. Thank Samsung for pushing Apple off their complacent butts and hopefully putting out a phone this year worthy of their moniker.

Apple will eat Samsung's lunch if they can get a huge display on the front with Touch ID integrated into the display. If they put the button on the back, then they're no better than Samsung. Why bother? It goes against every design principle Apple has ever had about the iPhone to put the button on the back. I don't think it will happen. Either we'll get a redesigned iPhone this year or we won't, but it won't have that stupid button on the back.

This!

Apple is either celebrating Samsung's offering (armed with the knowledge that they have the game over, TouchID-under-glass concept ready to rock) or they are scrambling to figure out how to successfully message a delay in the next iPhone until they can ensure under-glass ToughID. There just is no way they put it on the back.

And as many have stated: if the vertical camera orientation makes users shoot video in landscape mode... I'm all for it!!

I had a play with one today and newsflash: The fingerprint scanner isn't that big of a deal. In fact I'm confident that if we were used to it being there and it switched to under the screen we would be having the same discussion. It's different and takes a few minutes to get used to but ergonomically I think it's may even be better because you don't have to move your thumb to the bottom of the screen. Seriously, don't let this put you off buying the S8 because it's a very impressive phone.

We're not going to buy the S8 because we are Apple fans on an Apple forum and don't like Android. lol. But thanks for the obnoxious fingerscan placement shill job.

I'm also interested to see whether or not the S8 has beaten the iPhone 7 specs yet. Weren't they still having trouble beating the 6s in most benchmarks? It will be really interesting to see what Apple's custom GPU can do.
....and they say benchmarks and specs don't matter...unless of course Apple is leading them.

I wish I understood this. I constantly hear about the text running off the side of the S7E and now the S8. I own and S7E and don't see this happening. What am I missing?

Oh dear... you can't scan your finger print when the phone is on a flat surface without picking it up.
I am forever picking up my 6S because it won't read my fingerprints! Often needs 2-3 goes before insisting on a pin.
Also remember the S8 has an always on display so many things you would routinely unlock your phone for, notifications and the like, there is no need to with the S8

You're missing nothing; the forum is full of folks who have never seen, or touched these phones, but still seem to claim all of these things. I have an Edge ( and a 6S) and have no problem with 'distortion' either.

You are correct. After three generations the same iPhone design, Apple has to change the pace if they want to stay relevant in a competitive market. Now, Apple makes a great phone we all know that, but after a while, it becomes stagnant when you see the changes around you with how Samsung and LG are making strides with various alterations. So I think this will be a telltale sign of this September of what Apple is going to do to measure up to the competition.

AppleInsider is reporting that the S8+'s battery is very similar to the Note 7's. Beware!

It's not the same. Major difference is the S8+'s cell is made in South Korea which is on par with Japan in quality while the Note 7's cell was made in China so lower quality.

Same here. Although it wouldn't be the end of the world if I switched, but my fiancée and I say we're an "Apple family."

Coincidently, I have tried out the S7 and came away pretty impressed with the screen. Software wise, I did not like the bloatware loaded on the phone, so I probably should have tried a pure Android experience. But in the end, I'm still 100% happy with iPhone and the Apple ecosystem.

Love the Apple software and ecosystem. The hardware is very lackluster compared to an S8 or S8 Plus.

Samsung went too far with the size of the phone.
I have been using it for more than a day now (I am not even a press guy) and it is very awkward to use especially one-handedly. S8+ is just pure insanity. No phone needs to be that large, it is taller than Note 7 and other phablets and is very easy to drop.
And the glare and blur on edges is not good at all. YES, display is amazing, great detail, contrast, but I don't want edge display! I want flat....and they done goofed here.
Not everyone wants curved phones, Samsung.

You better get used to them though. In a few years, majority of OEMs will use curved screens, which is just paving the way for folding screens.

Speak for yourself; I very well might buy an S8. I'm a fan of both iOS and Android. I have no blind brand loyalty when it comes to tech. I switch between the two all the time and will buy whatever phone is top dog when I'm due for an upgrade and will best suit my needs.

Software makes all the difference. I got to use my brother's LG G6 Android phone over Easter and I could not for the life of me figure out how to get to the home screen or how to lock the phone. From what I've seen, the S8 suffers from the same problem of discoverability. Such a crítical button to the phone should not be hidden. Knowing Apple's attention to detail, the Home button will be virtual but it will always be visible or obvious in other ways.

With their 8-point test for the battery, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to Samsung.

I admire a person with such courage. :apple:

They'll be fine, the 7 will have no problem outselling the S8 in 2017.

Absolutely will.

Yeah that .8mm is really killing it...

Apple already has been eating Samsung's lunch for 6 years. There never has been a single quarter that Galaxy phones outsold iPhones!

more like since 2014. Samsung's sales/profit peaked and surpassed Apple in 2Q of 2014 when Samsung lost their #1 spot in China; then it suddenly slipped to #4, or #5, never to return to its top spot. Apples profit share peaks 4Q when new iPhone's are release; likewise for Samsung, 2Q is typically their most profitable quarters.
