AppleInsider is reporting that the S8+'s battery is very similar to the Note 7's. Beware!

Did you read the article ? Nothing to beware, it's poor journalism at best. Newsflash iPhones use same battery technology as note 7......Beware.... please. Enough of this false news.

One thing reviewers seem to fail to mention is "Smart Lock" you don't always need to use the Touch ID. You will still need to press the power button to turn the phone on.

I'm not sure what you are all smoking but this thing is ugly. The aspect ratio is a joke 16:9 is pretty much the only content anyone consumes and now they want you to use pillar boxes or cut off heads! The curved edges screen reflections and the all black look is not my thing. Touchwiz or whatever jizz Samsung are calling it is just not nice, stock android or nothing IMO, the lag they add over stock is horrible. The screen out the box isn't at native res so all these reviews seem flawed or the screen is too high res than needed and reviewers didn't bother to test. There are so many things wrong with this phone for me from design language to specs, give me a new pixel or any other Chinese make over Samsung. Lets at least hope it doesn't explode on people this time.

I hope apple can avoid the pitfalls of removing the screen bezels that Samsung has fallen into. 16:9 is a must, I will be buying the first phone that gets it right.

No, I agree, there seems to be some strange fascination with this device because they chopped off some upper bezels. Everything else about it just screams sloppy, rushed and wrong. It's a combination of things, not one specific.

even if apple didn't change much they will still sell a boatload because of the name alone. people buy it as a status symbol.

i've had it with these minor updates so that's why i'm switching to the s8 after 10 yrs of iphones. apple just wants to save money and reuse old parts because they know they can sell to the normies.

Smartlock is no good though; the device will remain unlocked even when you want it to be locked just because the trusted device is in range. When I get up from my desk at work and go to the printer room, my smartwatch will still be in range, but I very much want my phone on my desk to be locked and secure.

The note 7 issue was independent of the battery technology it was the design and implementation of the package. However differing manufacturers have differing tolerances and ymmv.

I will let you guys know how I like mine this Friday. First time with a Samsung phone. Been using mostly Nexus models since abandoning the iPhone after the 4.

It took more than courage to put not just a button but a security feature in a place that will cause user behaviour to avoid using it i.e. turn it off... a mega mega mega mega failure leagues worse than any criticism of the removal of headphone jack.

I'm not going to list the very obvious reason why this is a abject failure on multiple levels apart form the above and will only add, Button on the back is the new battery on fire.

I had a play with one today and newsflash: The fingerprint scanner isn't that big of a deal. In fact I'm confident that if we were used to it being there and it switched to under the screen we would be having the same discussion. It's different and takes a few minutes to get used to but ergonomically I think it's may even be better because you don't have to move your thumb to the bottom of the screen. Seriously, don't let this put you off buying the S8 because it's a very impressive phone.

Yep the button on the back design failure is a clear manifestation and tell they so very much wanted to get to market before Apple, you would think Samsung would have learned from the last disaster and Apple will wait it out and if they can't figure out under screen button on the front they'll keep the button somehow.

I suspect Apple are leaking they haven't figured out the button challenge when they may actually have and thus thrown the competition off the scent making them feel secure in releasing now with such a brian dead decision to put the button on the back but not only that right beside the camera lens. I didn't need to read the reviews to know this was utterly stupid.

I was concerned about that too but once i picked up the dummy model at the store, it wasn't that big of a deal. i mean it does suck that i have to pick up the phone or use the iris to unlock but it's ok.

Oh dear... you can't scan your finger print when the phone is on a flat surface without picking it up.

Yes and Samsung learned its lesson from that fiasco. It's bait click journalism to compare the S8 to note 7 and scare users.

Do you honestly believe that after the note 7 , the S8 was not thoroughly tested?

Apple uses compnenets from said manufacturers, hence why apple devices have also in the past had battery failure. You get your bad batches.

The 8+ is exactly why Apple's iCloud ecosystem is so important for lock in. I had the "misfortune" to see and hold one of these things and it makes my 7+ feel like an antique, not dissimilar from the way my first iPhone made my old Blackberry feel.

I know you can port everything over, and operate within an iOS environment (my family all have iPhones, we share calendars, iTunes sharing/accounts, etc.) but doing so is a PITA despite what many of the "easy" switching guides indicate.

Said another way - if I could use iCloud on this I'd buy an 8+ so fast it'd make your head spin.

Apple better deliver with the iPhone X or whatever it'll be called. They have real competition on the hardware side now.

iMessage and FaceTime have me locked in. All of my family have iPhones. My closest friends have iPhones. My girlfriend has an iPhone. iMessage and FaceTime just make my life easier. I wish I could switch.

I've been seeing some benchmarks and real world tests and the iPhone 7 smokes it in every department, so imagine how badly the iPhone 8 will destroy it. I can wait 5 more months for the superior iPhone 8.

Considering the S8 is the result of copying apple rumors (as they did with the watch) then yes, apple will blow past - as they always do

I've done that maybe a handful of times in all the times I've had a fingerprint scanner. Hardly life changing stuff.

Not an argument.

Design in this context is not about just you.

Imagine a door handle, key and lock only on one side of a door and not the side you are on. The door is locked.

Head of design should be fired.

They've just handed Apple the design win, assuming they don't follow suit and do something equally as stupid just to have a buttonless screen. Apple can not do nothing i.e. keep the button and they have naturally a better design if they fail to meet their deadline to crack the button under the screen sensor tech to their satisfaction for the next iPhone.

There is quite a bit of the "bait click" stuff in some of these posts. So I agree there.

But how do you know which manufacturers supplied batteries to Apple and for what model?

Same here. Although it wouldn't be the end of the world if I switched, but my fiancée and I say we're an "Apple family."

Coincidently, I have tried out the S7 and came away pretty impressed with the screen. Software wise, I did not like the bloatware loaded on the phone, so I probably should have tried a pure Android experience. But in the end, I'm still 100% happy with iPhone and the Apple ecosystem.

Exactly my earlier point I was writing while you posted this only vindication of my point (I haven't even looked at the phone in reality and merely read this one feature from the article).

Conclusion, you say it SUCKED...

It's so obviously a diminished experience in so many ways.

I'm not one to gloat on such issues and don't care what Samsung but from a design point of view and a user experince this is amazingly weak and rushed decision.

I do not think anyone should underestimate how bad a design choice this is. It spills over beyond merely being a button on the back bad as that is but it has consequences beyond that one aspect making it a multi dimensional design failure.

Just don't think all the praise is deserved with this. Haven't improved the speakers. Haven't improved the camera. Moved the finger print scanner to an awkward, unrechable position on the back that you will barely hit anyway because you'll be too busy smudging the camera lens up instead. All they did was get rid of the home button and increase the screen/aspect ratio. It's solely being praised for its aesthetics which, while look nice, looks really uncomfortable in use. There's already a few comments been made by people who have one already complaining about how uncomfortable it is to hold. So no, that isn't great design to me, it just looks pleasant. I know the iPhone 8 is rumoured for a similar design but at least they're rumoured to be vastly improving it in other areas too, not just the design. And they won't be going the "infinity display" route with curved edges, either, so it'll be more comfortable to actually hold and use.
