Making a screen taller than the usual ratio means:
1) Wasting more battery
2) Wasting more hardware resources
3) Wasting more money you could use somewhere else
4) Useless for Youtube videos
5) Good for some wider movies you're never going to watch on your phone
6) Somehow an improvement for web browsing but many parts of the page will be hard to reach
7) Good for "hardcore" gaming. If we can call any gaming on a phone "hardcore".

Most everyday use of this feature will be worse because of it. And apparently Apple will do the same, the same Apple that didn't want a screen to be bigger than 4" because it would have been hard to reach with your thumb.
My idea of a phone with no bezels was... a phone with no bezels. Not a phone with a bigger screen.
But this is clearly a market where showing new stuff is more important than getting the job done.

Speak for yourself; I very well might buy an S8. I'm a fan of both iOS and Android. I have no blind brand loyalty when it comes to tech. I switch between the two all the time and will buy whatever phone is top dog when I'm due for an upgrade and will best suit my needs.

(color highlight mine)

Yup. And considering all the tightly integrated services I have between my phone, iPad, iMac (my work-at-home machine), Mac Pro (my office machine), and Mac Book Pro ... there's no chance an Android would be able to come close to suiting my needs.

If you can make a phone with a bigger screen and less bezel in roughly the same form factor it's a win win in my book.

Stunning hardware. If this was the new Pixel, I would probably buy it. Samsung? No. But over all -- assuming they don't explode -- it should sell like crazy.

I don't expect Apple to beat this design with the iPhone 8. Too incremental, careful. Meh.

Yawn. Let me know when a Galaxy can outperform iPhone on benchmarks like Javascript execution, sequential SSD read/write, GPU performance.

I guess it's Google that engineers the JS engine on Android's mobile devices, I wonder why it's behind Apple's... It looks like Google Chrome does better on desktop though.

And why would sequential read/write matter so much on mobile devices? Aren't most IO's on mobile devices random IOs?

Apple better delivers! My 7+ is starting to look like the dated "tube tv" among "flat screens" with its redic huge bezel

That's a stretch. I'm all for less bezel though

He does have a point though.

Honestly I'm not sure there is anywhere you can position a fingerprint scanner on the back of a phone where it's not awkward. Really hoping Apple doesn't follow Samsung down this path.

Does it keep you warm in the winter?

Hardly funny anymore like the whole bendgate stopped being funny.

Not like this is samsung's route. The note 8 likely will have it under the display

Don't plan on buying Samsung stuff ever. Besides, the HQ is about to be nuked by North Korea.

So you don't own any Apple products?

What?

As I've been told many times on this forum. Specs don't matter... well, unless they support your argument.:D:p Yeah, they matter then. ;). Seriously. Does it have a decent camera? A good screen? Those two things have sold more phones than any SoC, NAND, or Enclave.

Please refrain from bringing facts and logic to the discussion.

So basically The Verge gave it a 9 because they like the industrial design. The camera is essentially the same as last year but they put it in the good column. If Apple released a new phone with next to no camera improvements The Verge would nail them for it. And big screen but not a big phone? Are you kidding me? All phones are massive these days. Just because some of the bezel was replaced by screen doesn't mean the phone isn't still big. Oh and average battery life was based on 1080p setting. I can only image how bad it would be if you use the WQHD setting. Of course now every one in the tech press will say who needs more than 1080p anyway.

Relax, everything will be OK. It's not the end of the world if someone says something good about a phone other than the iPhone.

Who cares about benchmarks? Or at least that's what I read here when they don't favor Apple.

lol agreed with your replies

it's like "well my dad is better than yours"

don't understand why people feel so threated by other products from different brands. It's ok to admit both the iphone/samsung are great devices

Yep it only took 5 years to finally beat LCD technology.:p
They already beat LCD 3 years ago. This current display just blows away any LCD out there

Why are you even mentioning "Flaws" with the S8? I never commented on that OR the S8 for that matter. All I stated was wait until the release of the iPhone 8 this Fall.
You were saying people are going to forget about the S8 once iPhone 8 comes out. Apple's main worry is not the S8 but the Note 8 which is going to fix all the flaws of the S8 including the fingerprint sensor so it's a formidable competition

Incorrect. I quoted one forum member as an inside Joke between Pat and I. I never said "People" at all in that quote.

For your reference of what I stated:

"Wait until you try the iPhone 8 this Fall Pat, you're going to be in love and forget about the S8 real fast."

I hope you are all aware of the fact as soon as the (magical OLED) version of the new iPhone later this year goes on pre order, you have to order within 0,04 seconds after the pre order starts...it will be backordered after 0,04 seconds for maybe like 3 or 4 months.

Look at the iPhone 7 (and this was just 3 year same design iPhone) and AirPods. iPhone 7 had shipping time sometimes of 6 to 8 weeks, after pre orders (and even weeks after these pre orders). AirPods still shipping times of more then 2 or 3 months.

Can you imagine what a total rehaul of a new OLED screen iPhone will do, I really think you are looking at 3 or 4 months before you can get hold of this new 2018 OLED iPhone. This iPhone will be so popular, it will be like winning a lottery if you can get one.

There is quite a bit of the "bait click" stuff in some of these posts. So I agree there.

But how do you know which manufacturers supplied batteries to Apple and for what model?

I don't. I just refer to the fact that ipod/iphones have met similar fates to the note 7 over the years. Manufacturing issues happen, though in the note 7 case, testing was cut, which Apple has never done, unless you consider the iphone 4 and the Antenna issue to be a case, though I suspect in that case Apple knew of the issue hence they had an accessory to address it, and choose to go to market with it, and could an argue it was not a major problem, though turned into a media circus

And they gave the Iphone 6SS a 9. Breath mate, it seems it does not take much to get a 9 on the verge........

I LOVE THIS POST!!!!!! LOVE IT!!!

Pick the Apple device that Actually has GPU performance and GLOAT! Look at the Mac range and scratch one head how the GPU performance is junk :) iPhones : Benchmarks Matter!!!! Its all about benchmarks!!!!!! Macs : Benchmarks are unrealistic, mean nothing, its the user experience.

I think it's likely come september it won't even be ready by then so at best we all will have to pre order it and wait till november anyway

okay, so november then. You are then probally looking at february/march 2018 before most people can get a hold of the new OLED iPhone. By that time Samsung will almost reveal the new Samsung S9 ;)
