You get what you pay for. If they are free, there is an obvious reason why. That's all they're worth.

So wait did I hear you guys correctly? Apple is greedy for giving away it's apps when the market has dictated that these apps should be free?

Yep. That's right OR Apple sees them as loss leaders.

iOS6, iOS7 was free and I am sure iOS8?

Also do you consider the current pages app to be worthless? They are simply upgrading the current pages?

Just because it has a price tag does not make it better.

Apple is using their software to sell their hardware.

The icons are already done, they are putting extra effort in to make the icons looks like ****

Shouldn't it be about the functionality of the app and not how detailed the icon design are? I'd rather Apple employees spend time on new and improved functionality, like a real competitor to Google Now.

So, a big **** YOU to people who paid for the apps?

Typical.

There I said it.

My understanding is that skeuomorphism is more about the texture and layout.

Word 98 was not skeuomorphic because it had a floppy icon to save a document.

GarageBand, however, uses skeuomorphism everywhere. It will be interesting to see the new version on Tuesday.

Skeuomorphism is more than just texture and layout though. It is about retaining superfluous elements of an original work that were a necessary part in its physical but not virtual form. For instance, a guitar needs to have strings which you can strum to produce a noise. A computer can produce the same noises without them, yet Garageband retains the design and limitations of a real guitar by creating a virtual guitar. But it can be found at much deeper levels of iOS 7 too. This whole idea of the layered OS based on motion and physicality is a skeuomorph itself. The zooming in and out of apps, the parallax effect, the tab view in Safari, are all examples of that. Jony Ive may have gotten rid of the more obvious part of skeuomorphism, but actually implemented a lot of new ones too.

These icons are unspeakably ugly as well as hard to discern. This is so sad for a company that had sense of style so well balanced with good visual ergonomics.

Why... why.. why do they insist with these UGLY, no FUGLY icons..? They are HORRIBLE... some users may like them, to each their own, but to me they are the ugliest piece of crap they ever did...
Because Steve Jobs is dead and can't stop them anymore... That is why... why... Why this happens.

The only problem with Apple is they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste.
And I don't mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way.
- Apple is the new Microsoft.

I know I'm beating a dead horse but...

How can anyone think the iOS 7 icons are an improvement?

The only positive to the new icons is they fit in better with the other horrible iOS 7 icons.
Put your glasses on and you'll see they are all about a million times better.

Not sure if this was isolated to some weird glitch on my end or something but I i browse the app store on my iPhone 5, bought at launch but the one i have now is a refurb due to my original getting dust under the lens, running iOS 7 Numbers, Pages, Keynote, iPhoto and iMovie all showed up as Free. I downloaded them and looking under my purchase history right now they show as Free. I do not appear to have been billed. in iTunes on my PC and Macbook they had thier usual prices. So either they made them free on the DL or i just took advantage of a glitch.

You actually do not need to purchase an new iPhone to get the apps for free.

I was curious as to whether or not it would be possible to get the iWork apps for free just by doing a restore. The morning of the iPhone 5s launch, prior to going to my local Apple Store to get the 5s, I did a restore and set it up as a new iPhone. When I opened the App Store it popped up asking if I would like to download the apps for free.

The simplified icons work with the layered effect of ios 7 where the wallpaper colors effect the appearance of folders and what not.

Because skeuomorphism is dead!
Ever heard of New Coke? Believe me Classic iOS is right arround the corner. :D

In the short run, the reintroduction of old Coke saved Coke's sales numbers and brought it back in the good graces of many customers and bottlers. Phone calls and letters to the company were as joyful and thankful as they had been angry and depressed ("You would have thought we'd cured cancer", said one executive). (wiki)

In the case of iOS 7 eye cancer.

Apple is using their software to sell their hardware.

iOS isn't free, it is built into the cost of an iPhone.

But you are right, Apple are using the 'freebies' to sell their hardware.

And this is where we'll never get everyone to agree. Some people like the more detailed designs that look life like, others like more simple/clean designs. For me I stick all my icons in folders so I don't really care what they look like.
Folders also look extremely ugly in iOS 7 and are less functinal showing only nine apps at once. Despite individual preferences for more or less detailed icons, all people like good icons and all people hate bad icons. Most of these new icons are not only simple and clean but also very bad designs. So bad even that it is not quite clear if any real designer was actually involved in the design process?

Jony Ive Put Apple's Marketing Team in Charge of iOS 7 Icon Design

Article says they're updating iWork for Mac too. So we're finally going to get updated versions of Pages and Numbers? It's only been 4 years since iWork '09, and Numbers is especially long in the tooth. Lots and lots of missing Excel functions.

Hopefully! It should be illegal to not update software for 4 years.

"GarageBand will, however, include in-app purchase content from Apple, with additional instruments and sounds available for a fee."

I bought it a long time ago. These IAPs better not be for things that already exist in the paid version! Upgrade GarageBand and BAM, stuff you paid for is gone.

Why? I do it all the time ;)

These aren't all bad besides the gradients being once again inconsistent , but the rest of the iOS 7 icons (and most of the GUI) are, especially the Music app. They just did it because that's what people think innovation and updates are all about.

----------

Sorry I just had to fix it for you.

What's wrong with iWeb? I can't teach my mom HTML code, sorry.

I hate nearly all of the iOS 7 icons, but I love the new iMovie icon. It's one of the few where they got the gradients right.

The iWork icons went from bad to a different kind of bad.
