they hav a RECALL program and then...this?

Just to nitpick, they have a repair programme.. a recall would be asking everyone to return their laptops for a new keyboard. ( Not that I don't think that should be what they do.. but as they're not replacing it with a different design.. )

Another nitpick... no repair program for 2018 model.

Time will tell.. as they consider it a different design, they haven't automatically included it.. though I'm sure if stories keep cropping up about failures still on new design that they'll eventually be forced to include it too. Hopefully.

...yet. I think Apple also hoped 3rd gen would improve things. Hard to imagine they're purposefully producing faulty devices so that users would return them...

It likely does improve things and reduce the failure rate for certain conditions, such as dust, debris, food particles etc.

But when you have a keyboard show signs of problems within the first 14 days, you have to consider that maybe there are more issues with these keyboards than just dust, etc. and these issues weren't addressed by the barrier. That or perhaps the barrier is fixing one issue while perhaps creating another?

I thought Lenovo would have more that 5,000 fans.

I hope the manage to sell more x1 yoga laptops than that.

I think you are letting Facebook Live views confuse you? I have no idea how many x1 yoga laptops they sold. Honestly don't care either. But they did overtake HP as the worlds largest computer manufacturer. So probably a fair number?

Apple keyboards used to be really durable as well. This video only has 744, 026 hits though. I thought Apple would have more than 744K fans? ;)

I will try to ask this once more - does anybody remember any computer or keyboard model, which would have keys failing in such widespread (again, no numbers here) way as with the latest Macbooks?

I try to recall all my previous laptops and desktops before that with external keyboards. Never even once did I think that a key might fail. They were literally indestructible. Sure, liquid damage might do it, but from normal use with no eating by the computer - they simply wouldn't fail ever.

My 2007 MBP keyboard failed a lot too. I think it was replaced 3 times. Otherwise, no other computer has ever had such similar failure issues.

Definitely. The first MBP worked fine for about 10 days before keyboard problems started. In this one, keys started to repeat on day two, and by now E is often unusable, either doubling or forcing me to slam it. :/ I'll have the third one end of the week. The store (reseller, not Apple Store) asked whether I'd like to replace it with a different laptop altogether, but I don't want Windows. I love everything about this computer, even the Touch Bar (once customised), but right now I do wish Apple would license macOS to less thin manufacturers.

The third MBP I returned started having issues with keys not always registering on the first push. I wasn’t confident that the keyboard issue had been truly resolved and had additional problems with that one and the previous ones. I decided to go a different route rather than roll the dice on #4. Some issues aren’t going to be fixed with Mojave, the keyboard being one.

They need to make a change more significant than just adding a little silicon barrier I think.

Before last year I was in the same mind frame about Windows. But I took a flyer and bought a Windows machine last year as a companion device and found I actually don’t mind it at all.

But if you want to stick with MacOS, your also sticking with MBP. It’s a thin beauty disguising a few warts

Not really confused.
One was conducted by Lenovo and the other by a random youtuber. Facebook live is just a platform.
And 5k is minuscule.

If Apple had released the video it would have much more than 744,000 views.

Apple event anyone?;)

Comparing the Apple event to a FB live hosted stress test of a single model is really pretty irrelevant. If Apple hosted a FB live event stress testing the MB, I doubt that would bring in any more than 5K. It’s a limited audience for a single model. Not a broad appeal event like the Apple Event smh

The viewership numbers of either video I posted have zero to do with either brand. That was really my point.

I doubt that. If Apple conducted a stress test on the gen 3 keyboard, I’m confident more than 5k would tune in.

True, don’t think many people would tune in to an event hosted by Lenovo either.

But 5k is quite tiny I would have expected more.

Lenevo does those kinds of tests all the time. It isn’t like an annual event hosted to highlight new tech each and every year, like Apple does. It is one of several “pop up” stress tests they do for many (all?) models. I don’t know. How many people are going to tune into FB live for every one of those things?

Comparing them to Apples Annual event, is just incongruous. If Apple did those stress tests year after year and had as many models as Lenovo does, I am guessing the target audience for each model would be just as small.

Edit: Then again, if Apple *did* do those kinds of stress tests year after year live, we wouldn’t have a Gen3 Butterfly keyboard thread to discuss the same issues as Gen1 and Gen2 had? Dunno.

Edit2: posting that Lenovo video wasn’t intended to spark a Lenovo vs Apple popularity debate. I am not a Lenovo fan. I am also not a Yoga owner and probably never will be. Posting that video came about from a question another user asked me about the keyboard failures I had with my 2018 MBP. The user asked if I had been using it outside and could it be the result of dust getting into the keyboard and my reaction was seriously?? Are we really down to having these kinds of discussions about Apple keyboards these days? There are plenty of laptops out there with keyboards that can survive a little dust without having to be asked the question “have you used it outside?”
Again, I am *not* a Lenovo fan, I am a disappointed Apple fan. I have had nothing but Apples for the past decade or so and the 2018 MBP is the first one I ever threw in the towel on

No idea.
How many laptops does Lenevo sell a quarter?
Or year

Painful, time-consuming and septic warts, when they decide to flare up. it's like MacBook Pro Herpes Edition since 2016. You know it is a diseased machine, you know it's lurking, ready to spring at you when the conditions feel right to it.

What did you go with at the end? I've peeked at Matebook X Pro (wouldn't that be ironic?) but now that I reduced my complete setup to just the laptop and bought tons of USB-C dongles and cables I need something with four USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 slots. Plus, there's the software I paid for, but I'm starting to wonder whether those licenses don't happen to be PC/Mac by accident...

I can't believe I'm even contemplating Windows. :(

Well it was really long thread.
Time for me - I have bought MBP 2018 one month ago, previously I have used 2016 version which have some keyboard problem like sticky and repeated keys but authorized service replaced that.

For me the 3 gen keyboard is pretty good but I noticed one strange issue and also have some consideration.
Maybe consideration first - how you guys cleaning the keyboard? Does anyone use compressed air on 3gen keyboard to clean up the membrane?

Now time for my issue. I have noticed that some keys (especially right shift and enter) are totally louder than rest of them.
I have recorded video:

Besides that this keys works properly but please understand me guys - this is not cheap machine and things like that may be annoying.

Does anyone noticed this issue too?

this is the 3d gen keyb the right shift is a bit louader
on the 1st gen the space bar was a bit louder
This is how Apple do things.

With all three I used arrow up and arrow down are a bit louder. But it doesn't bother me much once I got used to it. I don't use right shift, but just checked, also louder. Odd.

Those keys will have some kind of different mechanism, quite

All are keys that clearly have to have different mechanisms to the 'standard' key

I love ThinkPads. They are well built and actually serviceable. I am aware of the spyware issue in past but new machines have very clean installs of Windows.

The way my MacBook Air works with my iPhone, and iPad is indispensable. Handoff, iMessage and iCloud are just too good for me to give up. My other family members disagree and really enjoy Windows 10. They still use iPhones, but don't see a need for the features I do in MacOS.

I could use Windows 10 as I'm not doing anything in MacOS that I can't do with Windows 10, but I really don't want to.

Back to the original point of the thread. I am seriously thinking about purchasing a 2017 tbMacBook Pro. I don't need to video edit, I only use office apps, light 3d modeling, Xcode and email. The keyboards will be warrantied for 4 years, better then a 2018 with Apple care. In addition, I can purchase a larger drive and maybe go to 16gb or ram.

Is that crazy??
