I do as well. I was really hoping this year would be more than a spec bump in the same chassis. It needs an overhauled design for the next iteration. Something fresh, new and different

Don't worry Apple's guaranteed to get it right in 2019...

I think so as well. I think these clickey low travel models are a gateway to glass/Taptic replacements and thinner designs in the future
Unfortunately I see it going in that direction too, and I’m simply not ever going to go along with that - it’s an extremely poor usability decision for anyone who does even a moderate amount of typing. Why they’ve even more or less admitted as much themselves with the Smart Keyboard for the iPads...

I agree. I realize keyboards are a subjective thing and many folks love the current butterfly design, but I personally can’t stand them. Keys are too flat, lack proper travel and pitch, just feel clickey and cheap imho. But that’s just my opinion. It has its fans

Surprised Apple's not selling given you'll need another dongle :p:p:p

Good point. I think I will wait for a USB-C version with a MagSafe connection :)

Yeah, each to their own, of course, but I’m absolutely with you on that. I can use the butterfly keyboards but I still prefer doing any serious quantity of typing on a more traditional style keyboard. Throw in the reliability issues and it becomes a big off-putting black mark on machines which I otherwise do like.

Sorry to disappoint you, everyone - apparently I scratched the screen (not quite sure why, I treat my laptops better than I would an infant if I somehow acquired one). So instead of a replacement, the MBP went to be repaired, which will last 2-3 weeks.

In the Netherlands after three repairs you get the money back no matter what, so that will be three times 3 weeks + three times two weeks waiting for the keyboard to break again. Total of four months. There goes my deadline (I'm typing on a Chromebook which does not run Scrivener), but on the plus side I don't need to agonise anymore whether to get a Matebook X Pro or X1 Carbon once the fourth MBP breaks...

Today I am supposed to get a call from Apple, we'll see how that goes.
[doublepost=1539167501][/doublepost]This 2014 (?) Chromebook won't allow me to edit the post, but the keyboard still works :p Anyway, what I meant by disappointing you is that the results of the poll will be provided with a 2-3 weeks delay.

Wait what? They are denying the replacement based on a scratch to the screen? What on earth does the display, scratched or otherwise, have to do with the functionality of the keyboard? How bad was the scratch?

Me too! I mean I did something *really* stupid and grabbed the Surface Pro I own in a hurry, forgetting that I left the pen laying along the keyboard and screen and cracked the display. I had accidental damage coverage and went to the store with it to make a claim. They looked it up, saw I had only had it a couple of weeks and swapped it out for a new one without even making a claim.

To deny a swap of a machine with an obviously defective keyboard due to a surface scratch on the display? You can do better than that Apple.

Seemingly not...

1) Yes.
2) Beats me.
3) I actually haven't seen it until the employee pointed it out... It's noticeable in certain light, not at all at other angles, about 2 inches long, from the side of the screen. In any case, I can't wait to get my next defective keyboard!

Still no call from Apple, because despite me receiving one call yesterday this afternoon I got an email saying that Apple wanted to call me, but unfortunately I did not provide a phone number...

Exactly what i fear...life after AppleCare

To me it's simply a mechanism to drive sales of new hardware, as few are likely to invest so much in an older device. On topic the price of a replacement for the keyboard is ludicrous, especially as it's directly related to Apple's flawed design that puts being thinner above reliability and the user experience. As ever monopolies never serve the customer...

I would want a refund, nothing more, nothing less, Apple is fast becoming a joke. All I know have either dropped or are in the process of dropping Apple for professional purpose for a multitude of reasons....

I'm at a point now where I seriously doubt Apple is capable of producing a balanced computer line up, they should simply move into shoes & handbags and be done with it...

I bought the laptop from a reseller with 30 days return policy (Apple have 14). I was going to try one more MBP before getting a Windoze laptop, but I guess I'm stuck now. I was actually thinking yesterday "welp, a month from now I probably won't hang around Macrumors so much anymore..." ;)

And yes, I agree. Apple is a fashion company that produces electronics (and watch bands). But my revived Hackintosh is working very well indeed...

This thread got me thinking that I still have a 2001 Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop that I kept for really no other reason than it was the last Windows laptop I purchased before switching to Mac. But ya know, it still looks good and works, including the keyboard. These butterfail keyboards seem so problematic

I found an old HP Stream 13. It's got a 32 GB SSD (........), a very good keyboard (in comparison to certain laptops), and a HORRID trackpad. And dem bezels are the size of small countries. Currently deleting bloatware, which I never had to do with macOS even once, but hopefully I'll free enough space to be able to use Scrivener :p
