If Apple wanted to make a 'modular' MP like the old good ones, it would be out already. Just choose components, and release them. I'm afraid that by modular it will be something like trashcan, but with tb3 ports to 'expand' the device and possibilities. Or something similar. But locked down as usual. Meet the new Apple :)

They need to find a thinner air purifier to model the next one after :)

Worse they still only support AMD GPUs! Why!!!

I've had my air for maybe a month now, and today my t key has been repeating and delay repeating (when I typed repeating, it typed repeatitng, and actually typed spelled out as tytped. Purposely mispelling typed the way my keyboard did it actually added yet anotther (<- and again...) misplaced t after the p).

My 2016 ntb pro keyboard was starting to fail on me but at least that keyboard lasted a year...

Apple and it's execs should be thoroughly ashamed, however they are clearly only interested in sales and engineering a point of failure to drive further sales after a few years. Unfortunately it backfired as the Butterfly keyboard are failing far faster.

If Apple had a genuine concern for it's customers Apple would have replaced the design in the first year or so, not keep forcing this terrible keyboard in it's customers with known design & reliability issues. Apple is presenting little more than band aids on band aids, arrogance, greed, disinterest take your pick...

Personally I have many considerations when purchasing a new computer. The reliability of the keyboard has never been one, nor will it be one. As other members have stated I vote with my wallet and certainly wont support companies with known poor design and practises as Apple is currently persisting on...

Well-said. Completely agreed that when buying a new computer, the reliability of the keyboard has never been given considerations. Like vast majority of us, I assume things will just work especially at the price points that we're paying but I suppose not anymore.

At this point in time it's utterly and completely ridiculous that a company with such vast resources as Apple is incapable of designing & producing a reliable keyboard. At this point to me it's very clear Apple has no regard for the customer beyond what they are willing to spend.

I have just replaced my very last "working" Mac with an alternative at half the cost, yet offers decent build quality, far greater usability & versatility and has no troublesome history. The dwindling Mac professional user base may very well be a vocal minority, equally not without influence...

If I was to purchase a 15" MBP for my needs, the specification will cost over $4K. Yet this is what I am expected to accept o_O Just no, it's insulting at very best. Frankly Apple is no longer worthy of my custom; personally, professionally and any business I control...

I will also lament on this thread. I've purchased three laptops from Apple in three years:

2016 15" MBP - 8 montths and the keyboard started doing double strokes. Sent it to Apple to replace the keyboard.
2017 13" MBP - 6 months and the keyboard started doing double strokes. Sent it to Apple tot replace the keyboard.
2018 13" MBP (w/ the new silicone under tthe keys) - Tthis is the keyboard I'm typing on now after 5 months. Guess what's happening?!?!?!

This has been a defect for three generations, I'm absolutely blown we're nott seeing a fix thtat by a trillion dollar company with 1000+ days tto work on it. As a developer, tthe keyboard is the primary interface to thtis computer.

Help us Dan Riccio! Nobody likes a stutttering $3k Mac when they're trying to build iOS apps :(

The million dollar question then becomes, why do you keep giving Apple money for stuff you know is junk?

Vote with your wallet like I did.

If it were just a novelty purchase, I'd be on anothter brand for sure but I'm a mobile app developer and you have to build iOS apps on Macs. I can assure you I won' be purchasing another mac laptop for the wife while tthis is an issue. Other companies figured out how to master the construction of thte keyboard nearly half a century ago, I'll pick one of thtose.

I can understand that, but did you really need to buy a new one every year? I doubt there's anything your 13" 2018 can do that your 2017 or 2016 can't do, and I doubt the time savings is that drastic to shell out thousands.

Ha, in retrospect no but was hoping the issues were resolved or isolated to an unlucky few. Over 2016-2017 it became apparent that the issue is systemic. Then with the new silicone in the 2018 I was hoping that'd help but nope!

Luckily I've taken each one in at the end of my contract-relattetd iOS development work, got Apple to replace the keyboard, and re-sold it for a very small loss. A small hit on the resell, but a drop in the pond against the value of a developed iOS app. Maybe one day Android will catch up.

Perhaps I'll get an iMac for my next gig and couple it with a windows laptop and remote in when I'm (frequently) on the road. Good lord what a RIDICULOUS solution. Has it come to that Apple?

Welp, the new Mac Mini is quite portable...

It never occurred to me either that I would be picking a laptop based on whether its keyboard is going to last longer than a month. Apple overdid planned obsolescence a bit there. It should have been a YEAR, Apple, that's how long your warranty is! Not a month!

It should have been a YEAR, Apple, that's how long your warranty is! Not a month!

They would've still been nailed in at least Finland and if I'm not mistaken, many other European countries also have customer protection laws where customers can and should expect goods that cost as much Apple devices to last for at least two or three years, so the manufacturer can't weasel out of their responsibilities by offering a relatively short warranty period. This keyboard is just a huge design mistake that Apple's unwilling to admit for whatever reason ranging from shortsightedness to stubbornness to greed to plain stupidity.

It's baffling indeed that in 2018 we have to consider keyboard durability as a major factor when planning a laptop purchase. Apple took one of their advantages (IMO their pre-butterfly keyboards were among the best laptop keyboards) and turned it into a massive DO NOT BUY flag. When both reliability and repairability go down the drain while purchase and service prices go through the roof, it shouldn't surprise anyone that many customers are getting the "ex-" prefix. Well, that's kind of courageous, I guess.

I am typing on my 6th 2018 MBP 13" w/TB that is 4 days old and today my 'e' key has started to repeat. As always, it starts with the "e" repeating every once and a while and gradually renders the keyboard useless. I just keep exchanging them hoping I'll get lucky and geet a computer that actually works. I am BLOWN away and at this point think that I may be on Candid Camera.

For this thread people should type with the double repeating letters to show how much it affects and should not edit anything but should end off with Year 15/13 Inch MBP like hornette poster above.

After my last massive 6 month nightmare with Apple - horrible customer support, incompetent staff, keyboard, overheating, failing glue, glitching screen, etc .. - I moved back to a 2015 MBP

I thought I'd check on what people think of the third (!) iteration of the butterfly keyboard now that there are no new MacBooks with a proper keyboard ...

I am aghast.

Aghast at how bad Apple is? They have to actually be trying to mess things up. Seriously. An incompetent company making no effort would slap on a HP or Dell keyboard, which would be mediocre and cheap.. but would at least work.

So after my 2015MBP dies... what next? A Mac mini with a PC keyboard? Yikes!

Long as it looks nice and thinner, that's all that really matters. Performance and reliability Mac users need not worry about such trivia, be assured Apple will **** it up one way or the other so no need to worry :p

You are on number 6 and all 6 have had failed keyboards? Or did you return some for non-keyboard related issues?

All 6 have had the exact same keyboard issues. I have migrated data, not migrated data, created guest accounts, to test if it still happens there, and it did. Apple techs have confirmed each time that it is a hardware issue. It has always started with an occasional repeating "e" key and progressively just gets worse and migrates to other keys around the 'e' key. Some start within a few days and others within a week or so. Maybe depending on how much writing i'm doing.
This computer is 4 days old and today I have had the "e' repeat a handful of times.
I love everything else about this 2018 MBP and I've even gotten used to the feel of the keyboard (took me a while) and I enjoy it now. If only it actually worked.
Apple has been great with continually letting me swap the machine (they are all always new when I exchange them) but this last time they insinuated that this would be the last time...Hmm, seems to me that they have to keep swapping them if I keep getting a defective computer?! I am so mad that I want to keep swapping them to make the point. And, perhaps I finally get one that works? Wishful thinking, I know.
By the way, I'm typing this on my old 2012 MBP that I passed on to my son when I got my first 2018 MBP. This keyboard is a workhorse. I keep threatening to order a mint 2015 MBP (the last MBP with the old style keyboard), but I really love everything on the 18 (true tone color screen and trackpad are awesome), the touch bar is something I could take or leave.
Anyway, long winded answer to your question - Yes, all 6 have faulty keyboards.

As long as Apple verifies that the hardware is at fault I fail to see how they can refuse not to replace it. Personally I'd be looking for a full refund after 6 defective notebook's in a row.

Well, they actually probably don’t have to keep swapping them. They could instead refund your money and tell you they are not going to swap it again, but what they can’t do is tell you that you are stuck with that one if you are within your return period.

Honestly, maybe you would be better off with a refund. When do you decide enough is enough? Your probably somewhat lucky that this has been happening inside the return period, rather than down the road, when you will be loosing your machine for a week or more while it is being serviced.

If you are going to stick with Apple and plan to keep trying MBP after MBP, you had best have a backup Plan B for when it fails outside the return period.

I wonder if anyone has wondered what happened to my case?

1. In exhausting my avenue to seek remedy using Fair Trading NSW in a process that took until 22nd October, Apple still refused to offer me compensatory upgrade that I had requested. (As if all that had happened to me, including all the contraventions of consumer law, didn't occur.)

2. A month ago, I accepted a new full-time position at a company in Sydney (and moved down for the role) and conceded that for now, I sadly did not have the time to prioritise this symbolic suing of Apple for the sake of consumer rights in Australia in light of this atrocious, unacceptable #KeyboardGate defect.

So tonight, I emailed the Executive Liaison handling my case to ask for a swift replacement (without delay) of my 2017 unit with a 2018 unit by arranging the replacement unit to come to my nearest Apple store before I hand mine in, so that there is no undue delay, because mine already was tested by diagnostics on 18th July. If they agree to this given that is a very reasonable request, I will end my case.

If they don't, then they will REALLY piss me off and I will seriously consider allocating time (even though I am busy) to book my date with The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal and show Apple that they can't get away with this.

I have ALL the documentation needed. It's meticulously dated and saved along with my browsing history in my Google account which together demonstrates the dozens of hours resulting in lost productivity, in trying to seek my remedy as an Australian consumer and only being lied to, coerced, and denied my rights. I feel more confident and comfortable than ever to go into that hearing room and present what must be about 200 pages of emails, letters, web records, chat transcripts, and what you see below is hours of audio phone calls all (legally) recorded for the public interest, to prove it.

Or should I take the scandal to the media who would LOVE to expose that people are on their sixth, SIXTH(!) keyboard, even on the 2018 model?

It's up to them.

Any journos seeing this want to mine my material and make it into a story? My spacebar key is the latest to start failing...

Why do you think that swapping a 2017 MacBook Pro with a 2018 MacBook Pro will solve your keyboard issues ?

You would probably be better off getting Apple to take your computer back and refunding you the money.

I agree. I had a 2016 MBP that had the keyboard issue, was given a 2018 model after extensive repeat repairs regarding the keyboard issue and other hardware problems. My 2018 is now starting to exhibit the same symptoms as my 2016. I clean my machine weekly with a microfiber cloth.Would rather have a spec'd out 2015 mbp.

At least your 2017 has the 4 year keyboard program and they have to fix it for free...As of right now, the 2018 are not included in that program.
