Hey all here's my experience so far with a faulty 3rd gen keyboard
  • Originally purchased Aug. 2018 (2.6GHZ/16GB/RP560X/512GB).
  • Space bar started repeating characters in early January.
  • Went to an Apple store visit on 1/19 - they replaced the key in store but this did not fix the issue.
  • The laptop was sent for repairs on 1/19, then on 1/23 received an email that they would like to offer a new replacement instead so they can keep the faulty one for evaluation and research the problem more.
  • The replacement they offered was the exact same spec wise, I asked if could upgrade and pay the difference and surprisingly they did not hesitate.
  • Opted to upgrade to the Vega 20 GPU for $310
  • A new unit being shipped out today
Fingers crossed this new one is fine!

Good luck simple as that...

Sorry you had to go through all of this. I've been using my keyboard non stop as my main daily keyboard when attached to a monitor. Luckily, no issues. Nice of them to allow you to upgrade to the Vega 20 model. Hopefully the next model (4th gen) introduces a better keyboard.

Just recieved my Magic Keyboard space gray. It has much less travel than the 2012-2015 MBP and i think it's a joy to type on doesn't seem all that thick. I don't know why they didn't choose this design for the laptops.

I would have to agree. I think that the Apple Magic Keyboard is one of their best.

Although it also has a butterfly mechanism, I would surmise that it's either too thick or too expensive to replace the keyboard in the MacBook Pro.

Inference is clear, Apple simply doesn't care...

Q-6

I think they care about their stock price :).

As someone with a magic keyboard laying across a defective MBP keyboard, I agree that it's really nice to type on and seems to have a really nice travel distance. For the price though it's ridiculous that it doesn't have backlighting.

I thought Magic Keyboard has a low-profile scissor mechanism

It does.

Sounds like a good experience given the situation. Obviously you would prefer to not have the issue at all, but if it happens, this sounds like the best solution you could hope for.

Do you seem to notice a difference between the official "Magic Keyboard" and the Space Grey version bundled with the iMac Pros? I tried both out in the store and found that the iMac Pro's edition had a slightly firmer feel to it. It came closer to the feel of the butterfly keys than the normal white version.

At least it seemed that way. It wouldn't make sense why they would manufacture the regular silver keyboards differently from the space grey ones. It could have been just that I happened to stumble upon a space grey keyboard that was fresh out of the box and wasn't broken in yet.

I found the lower profile Magic Keyboards to be a pretty good typing experience and I really wonder why they didn't go with that design as well. It would seem to be something that has a good chance of keeping both the pre-2016 enthusiasts happy along with the fans of the butterfly keys.

this feels quite firm; not at all like the old wired one. I don't have another one at me, but the feels it not unlike the butterfly, which is why I'm even more confused why apple chose the faulty butterfly mechanism

I may give it another look then. I was really quite impressed with that one copy of the Magic Keyboard that got my attention. It had an amazing amount of tactility for a scissor switch... or maybe I won't tempt myself. After selling off some of my keyboard collection last year, I'm trying to keep it from multiplying again.

The butterfly keyboard is the first laptop keyboard I'm able to use without pain in a long time.
One of the reasons I was so pi**ed off was that this was possibly the nicest keyboard I have ever used. Srry, eever ruseed. Soft, quiet, lovely, I found a way to make the Touch Bar useful, it would have been my favourite Apple product ever... had it not been for... my irrrrattional eeasonstoo leave theecosystem.
Windows 10 is fantastic.
Short answer: no.
Long answer: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I think it was spending three hours searching for the reason why my screen changes colour profile when I switch between a mostly white page in a browser and Spotify's dark interface and that colour profile is changed gradually JUST slowly enough to make me angry. I found out I had to go to the Registry (where else?), change a key from this to that, and three days later I had to find it again because Windows' nightly update returned it to the previous state. This is exactly the type of problems that macOS never has.

Yes, macOS these days is kind of boring, really. This is what an operating system should be. Let me do my things and stop forcing me to waste time on idiotic problems such as "Windows Update encountered error -400001 while downloading an update for Windows Update". (I wish this was a joke. I needed to manually update Windows Update before it could update *itself* to download updates. I still wake up at night screaming. It took me eight hours total.)

– sent from my Yoga C930 which is currently running three operating systems and only one of them requires multiple updates per day

Windows 10 updates tend to ignore user settings. I set password protected sharing to off, and it's back on after update.

Windows 10 has its share of oddities, as does macOS. When I owned a Razer Blade this past summer (returned it), the power options were always revert to balanced even though I selected power saver. I now own a Lenovo, and that issue has not raised itself.

I love the ThinkPad keyboards! The are fantastic. The issue I have run into with Windows 10 is to only install Windows 10. The extra vendor programs often cause problems.

I just purchased a 2018 13" MacBook Pro to replace a 2013 MacBook Air. I hope I don't have these keyboard issues! I have to say I enjoy the 2018 keyboard. It is very comfortable to me.

I haven't had that issue with the Surface either. Was the issue with the Razer and BIOS setting overriding the Windows 10 settings?

Welp, I've had my 2018 Vega 20 for a month now, primarily in clamshell mode. (~90% of the time) and the spacebar is starting to double type. Gonna give it another few weeks and see how it progresses.

My 2016 gave me on and off trouble like that for the first year. Every 1 to 2 months, something would jam from anywhere between a few hours to a few days. Fortunately, it stopped entirely after one year. It's been over 13 months since my last jam. Like you, I use it in clamshell mode often and actually mostly used it in clamshell mode initially. The more I used it directly, the less it jammed. Hopefully yours just needs some breaking in like mine.

Try pressing it down in the middle and gently rotate it clockwise and then counterclockwise while it's held down. Repeat a few times.

*sad chuckle*

(seriously though, imagine the glee of MR users if the middle-pressed-gently-rotated-while-held-down computer in question was produced by Samsung)
