I actually have come around to the 3rd gen keyboard. My wife has a 2015 13" MacBook Pro and I borrowed for a couple of minutes when we were traveling. I immediately thought how much I preferred the 3rd generation keyboard. As long as I don't have issues with it (and I have not so far...) the 2.2Ghz 15" MacBook pro has been the perfect laptop for me.

I may be imagining this, but after todays beta 6 10.14.4 update, my keyboard seems to be behaving itself again. Maybe they've added some code in latest t2 update to try and nuke spurious inputs unshaky style but at lower level?

Of course, could be imagining it, will take a few days to be sure.

edit: noticed one doubled n slip through in last 20 minutes, and no spaces so far. Something has definitely changed, I was getting spaces almost every sentance till today.

Regardless, now that we have an idea about what is going on, what is the WARRANTY or repair policy now on this? I am going to purchase a MBP before Saturday if this is fixable without cost. It is the 2nd gen I assume.

... Why would I spend money an an external keyboard for my $2000 slim laptop just for a good keyboard?

My external keyboards typically run $125 to $160 and they are quite a superior typing experience. Yes, I do hook them up to laptops costing $2,000 to $3,000. I also hook them up to QHD displays. It's a superior visual experience. I find that the better keyboards, mice, displays, etc. enhance productivity.

It's not that bad. Could always get an external keyboard for <$100.

At first I was sure you were sarcastic. Now this is the most stupid answer I have ever read the last period I remember here. What a @@@ shame.

I was caught off guard too. Look at his sig, he is even a owner of previous MBP with perfect keyboards, including the 2008 era aluminium pre-unibody one.

I'm a pragmatic guy and really don't see the purpose for sarcasm. I use KVMs on my MacBook Pros 90% of the time. If I had major problems with the MBP keyboard, I'd just carry an external keyboard. A nice one at that. Life is too short to deal with hardware issues.

Pragmatic guy would just purchase a laptop with a working keyboard.

Well, I did. The 2015 MBP. But there aren't any laptops outside maybe one of the Razors with a mechanical keyboard. If nobody makes exactly what you want, then the pragmatic thing to do is to customize.

After 3 months with my new 2018 MacBook Pro, my "e" key is now repeating roughly every 10th keystroke – despite using an external keyboard most of the time.

Guess it's time for some compresseed air. Sigh...

Your sig indicates that you have Hackintosh experience so at least you have options.

Have you considered just bringing it into the Apple Store?

If canned air doesn't fix it, I probably will. I'd just be happy if I can avoid the 3-hour round trip and the n-day wait for the service of the Mac itself.

Compressed air will probably not help... Because of this membrane dirt will be kept inside and will cause further failure...

Better go soon to Apple Store and ask for repair – otherwise we understand why Apple say "in very rare cases..."
Statistics...

So let's see where we currently are:
Gen 1 - flat out unusable, feedback far too vague.
Gen 2a - felt ok to type on, probably the nadir of reliability (sticking keys).
Gen 2b - modest improvement on 2a.
Gen 3 - seems to have possibly reduced instances of sticking/ jammed keys, but repeating letters is possibly even worse.

What could they do?
Gen 4 - increased 1.0mm of travel to improve reliability and feel? I genuinely don't think it's anything to do with the butterfly design inherently, it's the fact the keys barely move so the tolerances on what counts as a keystroke aren't real-world proof.

Magic Keyboard mechanism - also has relatively little key travel, but enough it feels nicer to type on, and no reliability issues.

Haptic touchscreen keyboard - y'know, if they want to make things even worse for themselves.

Revert to the old keyboard - Hello, Cupertino bakery, I'd like to place an order for 1,484* humble pies to 1 Apple park way.

Nothing - more difficult with the recent acknowledgement, but they could double down on the 'vast majority' not experiencing any problems line, in a press release riddled with ee's and missing letters.

* one for every day since the KB was introduced in 2015, if you were wondering ;)

I think the redesign of the MacBook Pro is rumoured to happen (Ming chi Kuo) because of the keyboard issue. My guess is Apple will completely redesign the MacBook Pro, thinner bezels (hence the 16” to 16.5” rumour) and a few other updates, maybe Face ID? maybe a bit thicker to accommodate a new keyboard design.

Apple are probably bringing the redesigned MacBook Pro forward to this year in order to deal with the keyboard issue. Maybe we will see the new MacBook Pro at WWDC, possibly alongside the Mac Pro.

One idea: make the dimensions bigger, say 17.5 inches and move more components in the base to be around the keyboard instead of under it to allow for more travel. And you can have your thin and your key travel.

I'm betting that a redesign will happen this year and the keyboard change/improvement will be one of the major highlights.

Apple has been getting a lot of bad press since day one of the new MacBook Pros and no company would want to sail with that for so long. I'm sure they want to put this generation of MacBook Pros to rest as soon as possible. Hopefully they don't rush the redesigns and don't screw up again.

Spent ten minutes at the Apple Store this afternoon typing on a 15 MBP. It was very accurate and fast. I did not like the touch bar. I hope that a redesign gives you the Function keys and the Touch Bar. I could live with the keyboard if they resolved the reliability issues. There will be a lot of people that will wait 6-12 months to see what the reliability is like.

I think the redesign will address a number of things, the keyboard is probably at the top of the list. I see people saying that Apple should remove the Touch Bar, i'm not sure they will do that. I do wonder if the new Macbook Pro's will be announced alongside the new Mac Pro later this year.
