I just posted in another thread but I'll do it again here. I have a 2015 MacBook that was the first Mac to get this new butterfly keyboard. I've had three keyboard replacements in four years and the spacebar is glitching out again. Sometimes it will double space but most of the time it will not add a space causing words to be jammed together. It drives me crazy. The last time I took it in they told me the mechanism had broken under the left side of the spacebar and I assume that has happened again or is very close to happening again. Usually when it starts acting up it will fail soon after. This is a Gen 1 keyboard.

I need to upgrade this laptop finally and am concerned about the MBP. I had a 2009 MBP that I kept for 6 years. That thing was a tank and worked perfectly. Had the user-replaceable battery and when it died I'd just hop on OWC and order another for $70 and be good as new. All this "progress" doesn't necessarily seem a great thing to me.

If they change the keyboard I'll take a good look at the new MBP. If they don't - I guess it's time to move on to something else after 35 years (yes - I bought my first Apple - an Apple IIe back in 1985) of being a devoted user of Apple computers.

You could try tweeting that to Tim Cook.

I don't have any Social Media. No Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest. Nothing. I also have no drama in my life. :)

Well, you have a butterfly drama the last years it seems. :D

Also congrats for staying away of social media. Especially FB and Instagram. Twitter and Pinterest is completely different kind, especially Pinterest.

did they give you the option to upgrade it or just gave you a exact match. i7 500gig like that. Id like to upgrade my storage and possibly wait for a 2019 model as I hope the keyboard issues are better handled.
No, it is kind for kind. So I had 16 GB RAM, 512, SSD, and a i7 processor in my 2016. Got the same exact spec of a 2018. Which was obviously an upgrade but all I wanted was the 3rd gyn keyboard not to suck like the 2nd gen or repaired 2nd gen via the repair program did.

Some people in here gave the option to upgrade if they wanted to. Someone a few pages back got a 15” from a 13” but that’s a rare occurrence.
Back in 2011 apple swapped out my 2008 white MacBook for top case replacement cracking over 4 times with a 2011 MacBook Pro 13”. I think it’s case to case with what they allow.
Did you ask the senior advisor if you could get what originally paid for the machine and upgrade it and pay the difference?

I think it's a case by case basis. I'm not sure about Macs because i've never had any issue, however my 2017 iPad Pro had an issue 15-16 months after i brought it. i had an issue with customer service, and so I sent a strongly worded (but not unpleasant or mean) email to Phil Schiller and Tim Cook. Within a couple of hours i received a phone call from Apple executive relations, and to cut a loooong story short, i was sent a new iPad Pro the very next day.

If anyone has any issues and Apple customer service wont or can't help, i strongly advice you to write an email to Tim and or Phil Schiller, include your name and phone number. You probably won't get a response from them directly, but they will get executive relations to deal with the matter.

I had three calls from executive relations asking about my broken keyboards in MBP18s, a promise that it would totally get a follow-up, be escalated, etc. That didn't happen.

– sent from my Hacbook Pro 13.9"

If you still have it, I'd suggest a nice YouTube video and maybe a TV interview with your local consumer affairs department.

So I did not explicitly ask if I could upgrade any specs as that isn't something I felt like I needed to do. I have asked if I could swap it for a Mac mini and they said no to that. I was able to transfer apple care and get prorated coverage though. I wish I could help more. These macboks are awful. 2015 MacBook Pro will be the gold standard for a long time unfortunately.

How did you get that far? I would love to get upset at someone over this.

Did the apple senior advisor get back to you?

I'm going to be on my 5th repair with my 2017 15". I am going to wait though until they redesign the keyboard again, because my boyfriend has the 2018 13" and his as well is beginning to fail at 6 months of use. Which is surprising to me since he said I'm ridiculous for being so OCD about my laptop yet experienced the same issue LOL. I don't feel like getting a new one if I know that it will break in about 6 months and I have to play the repair game.

Right now my space bar doesn't work well, along with my U (I have to hit it a lot harder because its so stiff). My boyfriends delete key is stiff as well and even stuck down! Also I want to note that he doesn't eat near his computer too and babies it since he didn't get AppleCare!

These computers are serious lemons!

Not for nothing, but I was doing the same thing when I owned a 2018 MBP. I was treating it like a 7th century ming vase. When I started seeing reports of 2018 keyboards failing, I knew the writing was on the wall. Why treat something so delicately and it will still fail? I chose to sell my laptop before the value dropped too much.

If we see a 4th generation butterfly keyboard, I'll still not return to the fold. My departure from the Mac ecosystem has opened my eyes to some great laptop designs that are thousands of dollars less then what Apple charges.

I bought a 2011 MacBook Pro 17 last year and I didn't know about the Discrete Graphics problem. It died a month later. That's a pretty harsh lesson to learn. So I started to read about the problems with MacBook Pros by year and model and discovered that there have been a lot of problems over the years. My 2008 lasted 10 years before the display died but I can even still use it today with an external monitor.

I think that it's perfectly fine to be paranoid, especially since you're paying a good premium for the hardware and inability to upgrade.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do. If I had one of these models, I'd carry around an external keyboard. I have an old Magic Keyboard 1 that I'd use. I might carry around a TKL Mechanical too but those weigh 4-5 pounds.

Apple tweaks its troubled MacBook keyboard design yet again, expands repair program

https://apple.news/AhxYSPhwQQ7uKzAovTPhbqg

So, the “good” news for those of us with 2018 MBP’s is that we are finally added to the repair program and were we may or may not receive the new “improved” keyboards which may or may not work any better than the previous “fixed” ones?

I'm very happy that they have a fix. It will be interesting to see if this is THE fix.

If I had a 2018, I think that I'd want my keyboard to be replaced before the end of the 4-year from purchase date.

Meanwhile they have totally screwed over 2016 and 2017 owners, because they will not ever get the new materials update.

They need to do a buyback program for those users.

The very fact they engineered a fourth generation with new materials is admission of a huge problem with the very early models and they need to make it right for those customers.

Some current MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar and 15-inch customers that bring in their keyboards for repair will actually have their keyboards replaced with ones that have these new materials, Apple says. That will only happen for MacBooks that have the third-generation butterfly keyboard today: the 2018 models of the MacBook Pro and the new MacBook Air.

This actually sucks. They should figure out a retrofit. If they don't, then the 2016/2017 models are ticking time bombs.

The MacBooks and MacBook Airs weren't discussed either. Will there be a repair program for them and are new models fitted with the new keyboards? I'm glad that Apple is addressing this but it's not getting me to buy a new MacBook anytime soon. Bringing out the 16.5 inch screen would have been nice too.

Yeah, the article says that they won’t just replace them, just because you don’t trust the keyboard in your machine. I don’t think that goes far enough. Vehicles are eligible for warranty service all the time, despite whether you have experienced the issue or not. They know these keyboards are problematic. They should give all users the option to replace them with the new keyboards, even if it is for a nominal fee if you are doing it voluntarily.

One difference with vehicles is that safety issues could result in injuries and deaths. PCs aren't seen that way though they could also cause injuries and deaths and they have.

But not every recall with a vehicle is an issue that can cause injury or death. The ones that could result in injury or death are the ones that stand out and the first ones we think of, but there are a lot that are minor that involve switches or latches like the center console or cosmetic issues. A lot more of those really, but they aren’t what people think of at first.

Edit: To clarify, perhaps recall wasn’t the best term to use. Sometimes vehicle manufacturers use the term “service bulletin” or similar for minor issues that are not safety recalls. But the end result is much the same. They fix, repair or replace what is known to not be working or has remedy cosmetic issues that it should not.

I still feel Apple is not going far enough in regards to the issue as far as a remedy. I think everyone who has one should, be able to have it replaced, even if you have to pay a nominal fee if you are not currently exhibiting issues.

Indeed, It may or may not fix it, apple senior advisor just told me my recent keyboard repair on my 2018 MacBook Pro received the new materials the 2019 uses. We shall see what happens. Before it only took 7 months for it to break.

Apple also ominously included the new 2019 MBP which speaks volumes. At least it's "cut and dried" should the drama continue...
