I can second this, I had a few repeat repairs for multiple issues on my 2016 mbp. Genius Bar did not offer a new machine so I called a senior advisor. It was the first thing he offered. Now my 2018 also has keyboard problems. Just got it back from repair. Considering selling it for Mac mini and iPad Pro combo.
did they give you the option to upgrade it or just gave you a exact match. i7 500gig like that. Id like to upgrade my storage and possibly wait for a 2019 model as I hope the keyboard issues are better handled.

I am doing this. My 2015 failed, got the 2018 on a good deal and the keyboard started to fail in 2 months. Sold it off at a loss and getting the Mac Mini - Arrives tomorrow.

I am going to miss the comfort of lounging around my place with the laptop but I guess that is what I get for being tied to the Apple eco system - sit straight at a table.

Although, the Mac mini forum has a long thread detailing bluetooth issues with it. Will need to watch out for that...

I talked with a senior advisor today and she told me she wasn't aware of a repair program swap for a new machine. I told her it was a lemon law thing with 3 repairs and on the 4th I should have the option. She told me she would look into it and get back to me. I still want to wait till the 2019 models are here if possible.

I am sure they also told you you are the first to call about faulty keyboards...

she didn't seem too informed about any of it. I told her the 2018's had a silicone membrane that helps the issue with the faulty keyboards that cant be put into a 2016 model and she didnt know what to say. We'll see what she "finds out" when she looks into replacing my computer.

Not sure if anyone posted this, but here's a VERY thorough teardown and analysis by a guy who's been an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) Technician for the last 3 years. Well worth a read. He makes a very good case for the "dust" theory being BS, and thinks that:

My suspicion is that the metal dome experiences metal fatigue and slowly begin to lose connection, or that that little U-shaped cutout in the centre of the dome weakens and starts to easily bounce when pressed, making contact 2+ times.

I myself hate typing on the butterfly keyboard enough to avoid it in the first place, but even if I didn't, I wouldn't spend money on one these things.

The farce continues; subjectively one of the worst keyboards ever produced, objectively one of the most unreliable and costly to effect repair...

It's not dust, it never was it's simply a flawed design. Apple is simply too arrogant to recant, after over four years. Simple answer no $$$$$$ for Apple both privately & professionally...

I have to agree. It feels like someone's (something something aluminium something) lovechild is being pushed against common sense, and no matter how much money and respect gets lost, that someone won't admit having made a mistake.

would apple release another model that didnt completely or mostly fix this issue? I cant see how a company would release an update to a computer with a keyboard that would cause more backlash but what do I know.

It's a load of ********, that's what it is. In my profession someone or a team made such a colossal error, they would all be going home. Apple's exec's should be ashamed at what they have done to the Mac, what a ****ing waste. Personally I wont entertain the current overpriced garbage. After over 20 years that deeply saddens me, equally it is what it is. I need notebooks that perform and above all else are reliable, Pro "my arse" Apple exec's sold out simple as that...

Four years on the keyboard is still garbage, enough said...

I feel like 2018 was there last try at the keyboard with the changes they did. Depends on how many cases from 2018 they had with issues id think. Im expecting a big upgrade with it.

Does anybody know if there's any space with the lcd to put more in hardware? I think adding components into the lcd and slimming down the rest of the internals under the keyboard can get them one with the perfect amount of travel like their magic keyboards.

If the rumoured 16" MBP is coming then I suspect it will have a newly designed keyboard and they will wait for the lab rats (consumers) to test it. If ok, then and only then will they replace the keyboard on other models. Until then I still believe they will do an spec update on the 13/15" using the same keyboard design again, maybe with more tweaks.

Or maybe they are so ballsy to just stick with it.

I have a 2018 MBP, got it in February, the spacebar started to doubletap as of last week. Just been serviced at the Apple Store in London, new top case. So it lasted 2-3 months. I barely use this laptop so this is extremely disappointing.

I already knew about the 2016/2017 recall programme. Guys at the store happy to replace straight away. I did ask would this come back and they smiled.

Soooo...I'm hoping this does break another 2-3 times and then I get the new 2019 model due to be released shortly. Fingers crossed!

Six dollar signs Queen? Well you could be not far wrong, six figure machines are probably on the way.

Keyboard issues are very annoying especially if you travel and depend on the laptop..

In one of my latest trips I had to buy a magic keyboard lol...

Be careful what you wish for. I suspect the next big redesign may well lead to a TouchBar-like surface replacing the keyboard. No more dust; no more mechanical failures! They'll charge you a $1000 just for the "upgrade" and we can all "enjoy" the experience of typing on a giant sheet of glass. Innovate my ass! Backslaps for everyone on this magical "improvement."

You think I'm kidding? Just wait and see. That's where Cook and Ive are leading us.

I actually wouldn’t mind that, especially if it has haptic feedback.

Business both makes and costs money, business also needs relevant hardware, it certainly doesn't need auto fail keyboards and SSD's on the Logic Board...

Cost isn’t always a factor when working, for example I don’t mind spending money on a MacBook that has quality. If Apple fix the keyboard in the upcoming MacBooks, I will buy one. I would much rather buy a Mac than a Windows machine. It’s whatever makes people productive, when they are using these machines to make money.

Agreed. Technology need to enhance our efforts and make us more productive.

Personally I don't care about the Operating System. The question is does OS and programs that run on the OS increase productivity?

I think that's what Apple devices do, for the majority of the time at least. The issue at the moment is the keyboard failure, apart from that i would have no problem buying a new Macbook. The iPad Pro is one of my favourite Apple devices, i use it for photo editing in Pixelmator, drawing in Procreate and so on. I just think Apple need to sort out the keyboard issues on the Mac.

As for the OS, i love MacOS a lot more than Windows, it's just so much better in my opinion. Mojave is my favourite version so far, in fact i'm looking forward to seeing the new version at WWDC. But for working i find Apple devices are great.

I just posted in another thread but I'll do it again here. I have a 2015 MacBook that was the first Mac to get this new butterfly keyboard. I've had three keyboard replacements in four years and the spacebar is glitching out again. Sometimes it will double space but most of the time it will not add a space causing words to be jammed together. It drives me crazy. The last time I took it in they told me the mechanism had broken under the left side of the spacebar and I assume that has happened again or is very close to happening again. Usually when it starts acting up it will fail soon after. This is a Gen 1 keyboard.

I need to upgrade this laptop finally and am concerned about the MBP. I had a 2009 MBP that I kept for 6 years. That thing was a tank and worked perfectly. Had the user-replaceable battery and when it died I'd just hop on OWC and order another for $70 and be good as new. All this "progress" doesn't necessarily seem a great thing to me.

If they change the keyboard I'll take a good look at the new MBP. If they don't - I guess it's time to move on to something else after 35 years (yes - I bought my first Apple - an Apple IIe back in 1985) of being a devoted user of Apple computers.

Sadly the Butterfly keyboard is garbage and Apple seemingly doesn't care. Apple's arrogance is beyond exception and they have forgotten that the customer pay's the way. Personally I've never seen so many drop the Mac thx to Apple enforcing this atrocious keyboard...
