That won't work since for privacy reasons they don't even track where you are, just who you were near to.
I would call this a strawberryman argument. If you managed to be close to five infected people then there is no privacy reason that stops your phone from telling you. And then it's up to you to decide whether you are a decent person who isolates themselves or a Covidiot who goes out to infect more people. And I don't know if you got this, but telling you that you were close to an infected person so you can take the right action is the whole point of this.

Nothing could possibly go wrong with this idea, e.g., you accidentally walk too close to somebody and get sued. Yes, I'm sorta kidding, although lawyers and internet hackers have the same objective.
Nobody would know it's you.

Someone gets infected. The question is where they got it.
No, the question is who may they have passed it to. That's 100 times more important.

I hope no one is buying into this ********. We track no other sicknesses, why start now....Makes you wonder, one company was hoarding 9 million N95 mask and the other sensors everything you put on YouTube and allows no freedom of speech. Wake up people.

Wonderful troll post for a first post.

Just about 200000 people have died from this crap already this year. Any additional questions? No? Thought so.

People need to read the spec. Comments spreading fear and uncertainty about “tracking” from folks who don’t understand how the system works don’t contribute to meaningful conversation:
You’re right. But people don’t want to inform themselves - they insist on their right to post FUD because, people.

UK and France can "favor" it all they want; if Apple doesn't allow background apps with it, it's a non-starter.

that kind of behaviour is exactly how you lose customers and marketshare. Apple is acting like a dictatorship. They gave it up now because it’s critical - like the Germans say, now is not the time for squabbles but rest assured there will be an antitrust investigation once this is over and Apple will be fined billions. If you honestly think Apple can dictate anything it wants to entire countries - both you and Apple will be deeply shocked and disappointed

This is honestly an awesome way of tracing infection and potentially helpful to put the world back on its rails sooner rather than later, but the paranoid crowd are going to ruin it for everyone else aren't they.
But how many are truly paranoid? Everyone using this app helps a little bit to keep infections down. The truly paranoid will eventually die out.

You do realise that Apple and Google are in this together? You do realise that they do what‘s good for YOU, the customer - protecting your privacy and data - instead of doing what governments want (collect personally identifiable data)?

Since the API is by Apple and Google, they would have a very, very hard time with this. For a start, there is no "antitrust" law in Germany. There are laws against anti-competitive behaviour. And there are privacy laws. If Apple or Google said "not allowed on Samsung phones", that would be anti-competitive. When they say - together - "we don't allow you to use our phones in a way that destroys our customer's privacy without any need", nothing they can do.

No, this person is just out on a blind ignorant rant it seems.

Do people really leave bluetooth on while they’re not using it and they’re out and about?
One, they do. And people like me have it turned on all the time to listen to music on their headphones :)
But the Apple / Google API uses low power bluetooth, because it is much more limited in what it needs to do. Detect phones nearby using low powre bluetooth, that's all. They don't need high power for far bandwidth, because if you are too far away from me for low power bluetooth to detect you, then you are too far away from me to infect me or get infected by me.

May be it is better simply to put masks on?

Maybe a combination of things is better than a single type of action. Masks are more of a protection for those around us. You could still have been close to an infected person and knowing that is better than not.

Sure. To have the Watch work as intended, to listen to music, you name it.
I honestly never got why people buy smartphones and then switch off everything that makes the device „smart“ in the first place (BT, GPS, fetching mail and the like).

If you have an Apple Watch you're using Bluetooth all the time. If you have AirPods or other headset you could in theory turn it off once you finished listening, but who does that? Sounds like a huge inconvenience cause you have to remember to turn it back on.
You can however deny bluetooth permission to an app you don't trust.
